Time-optimal selective pulses of two uncoupled spin-1/2 particles

2018

We investigate the time-optimal solution of the selective control of two uncoupled spin 1/2 particles. Using the Pontryagin Maximum Principle, we derive the global time-optimal pulses for two spins with different offsets. We show that the Pontryagin Hamiltonian can be written as a one-dimensional effective Hamiltonian. The optimal fields can be expressed analytically in terms of elliptic integrals. The time-optimal control problem is solved for the selective inversion and excitation processes. A bifurcation in the structure of the control fields occurs for a specific offset threshold. In particular, we show that for small offsets, the optimal solution is the concatenation of regular and sin…

Models and solution methods for the uncapacitatedr-allocationp-hub equitable center problem

2017

Hub networks are commonly used in telecommunications and logistics to connect origins to destinations in situations where a direct connection between each origin–destination (o-d) pair is impractical or too costly. Hubs serve as switching points to consolidate and route traffic in order to realize economies of scale. The main decisions associated with hub-network problems include (1) determining the number of hubs (p), (2) selecting the p-nodes in the network that will serve as hubs, (3) allocating non-hub nodes (terminals) to up to r-hubs, and (4) routing the pairwise o-d traffic. Typically, hub location problems include all four decisions while hub allocation problems assume that the valu…

Mean-Field Game Modeling the Bandwagon Effect with Activation Costs

2015

This paper provides a mean-field game theoretic model of the bandwagon effect in social networks. This effect can be observed whenever individuals tend to align their own opinions to a mainstream opinion. The contribution is threefold. First, we describe the opinion propagation as a mean-field game with local interactions. Second, we establish mean-field equilibrium strategies in the case where the mainstream opinion is constant. Such strategies are shown to have a threshold structure. Third, we extend the use of threshold strategies to the case of time-varying mainstream opinion and study the evolution of the macroscopic system.

Hidden Oscillations In The Closed-Loop Aircraft-Pilot System And Their Prevention* *This work was supported by Russian Science Foundation (project 14…

2016

Abstract The paper is devoted to studying and prevention of a special kind of oscillations-the Pilot Involved Oscillations (PIOs) which may appear in man-machine closed-loop dynamical systems. The PIO of categories II and III are defined as essentially non-linear unintended steady fluctuations of the piloted aircraft, generated due to pilot efforts to control the aircraft with a high precision. The main non-linear factor leading to the PIO is, generally, rate limitations of the aircraft control surfaces, resulting in a delay in the response of the aircraft to pilot commands. In many cases, these oscillations indicate presence of hidden, rather than self-excited attractors in the aircraft-pi…

APROS-NIMBUS: Dynamic Process Simulator and Interactive Multiobjective Optimization in Plant Automation

2013

Abstract Virtual commissioning of chemical plants often involves a dynamic simulator and an optimization method. This paper demonstrates the integration of APROS, a dynamic process simulator and IND-NIMBUS, an interactive multiobjective optimization software. We implement a multiobjective concentration control problem in APROS involving conflicting objectives and employ a decision maker to interact with IND-NIMBUS and express his preference information to finally obtain his most preferred solution. The results of this study show that APROS and IND-NIMBUS can be integrated and an interactive multiobjective optimization method can help the decision maker in exploring trade-offs among conflict…

The Olt River pollution monitoring, using spatial analysis, analityc hierarchy process and technique for order preference by similarity methods

2016

Abstract Environmental pollution is one of the most serious problems of the contemporary world. Chemical industry is one of the major sources of environmental pollutants. Human knowledge and experience is currently focused on the use of assessment methods and techniques before and during the onset of such activities. For instance, it is common to consider the integration of multiple constraining factors and also, taking into account their high complexity and the application of one of the various techniques of Multi-Criteria Decision Making. The purpose of this study is to determine the location of the least and most polluted areas from several sampling points on the Olt River, in Romania. I…

An Innovative Friction Stir Welding Based Technique to Produce Dissimilar Light Alloys to Thermoplastic Matrix Composite Joints

2016

Abstract Aluminum sheets can be joined to composite materials with different techniques. Each of them has advantages and weak points over the others. In literature, new techniques and patents are continuously developed to overcome these difficulties. In the paper a new Friction Stir Welding based approach is proposed to mechanically join AA6082-T6 to self-reinforced polypropylene. The aluminum sheet is pre-holed along both the sides of the weld line. A pinless tool generates the heat and pressure needed to activate back-extrusion of the composite. Joints have been produced with varying hole diameter and pitch. The mechanical resistance of the joint has been evaluated and the different failu…

Numerical Study of a Process Strategy for Improving Geometrical Accuracy in Incremental Forming Process

2019

Abstract Incremental forming process is a relatively new process among researchers, which is yet to be implemented in automotive and aerospace industries. The researchers are studying various process strategies and methods to improve the geometrical accuracy of the parts obtained by incremental forming, because the geometry of the parts is one of the key factors holding back the process industrialization. One good method to investigate the benefits of a process strategy is by means of numerical analysis, from which the results obtained can confirm or disprove the gains of the researched strategy. The aim of this paper is to present the advantages of using a fluid under pressure as a support…

Managing adoption by cultural development: Exploring the plant level effect of a ‘Company Specific Production System’ (XPS) in a Norwegian multinatio…

2020

Purpose: ‘Company Specific Production Systems’ (XPS) aim to adopt ‘best practice’ across plants within a company. A pertinent issue in the literature involves the constraints in the possibilities of realising such an adoption. This paper addresses to what extent and how a Norwegian multinational succeeded in adopting the XPS in its local plants. Design/methodology/approach: A Brazilian, Chinese and Norwegian plant of a Norwegian electro-chemical company were studied from 2017 to 2019. Our data consist of the results of the plant’s assessment performance program, combined with interviews and observations at different organizational levels. Findings: The MNC had largely managed to adopt the X…

Backoff Hardware Architecture for Inter-FPGA Traffic Management

2017

International audience; Multi-FPGA platforms are considered to be the mostappropriate experimental way to emulate a large Multi-ProcessorSystem-on-Chip based on a Network-on-Chip. However, theuse of a Network-on-Chip in several FPGAs requires inter-FPGA communication links to replace intra-FPGA links betweenrouters. As the ratio of the logic capacity to the number of IOsonly increases slowly with each generation of FPGA, IOs inFPGA are becoming a scare resource. And as there are morerouters than IOs, using a Network-on-Chip requires sharinginter-FPGA links between routers, and sharing an external linkcan lead to bottlenecks. Here, we evaluate the inter-FPGA trafficmanagement using a backoff…
