Experimental Research of the Formability of Lightweight Metallic Materials Used in Automotive Industry

2015

This paper aims to study the plastic deformation behaviour of lightweight metallic materials in order to reduce the total weight of the vehicles without affecting their performances. For the theoretical and experimental researches presented here, among these materials the AZ31B magnesium alloy has been chosen, a representative alloy for the magnesium-zinc-aluminium alloy system. The results of the theoretical researches, made on finite elements models, were validated by means of experimental researches consisting of tensile tests, forming limit curves determination tests and AZ31B magnesium alloy drawing, respectively.

Theoretical and Experimental Researches Regarding Multilayer Materials Used for Incremental Forming

2014

Although this represents a relatively recent development in the industry, the composite multilayer sheets are currently encountered in almost all industrial domains, due to the density, mechanical strength and energy absorption properties that are higher than those of the blanks realised from a single material. These materials are useful especially in domains such a the automotive industry, where the vehicles must fulfil simultaneously conditions of increased passenger safety, increased comfort, increase of the loading capacity in conditions of a reduced energy consumption. First of all the paper shows the types of multilayer sheets and their areas and areas of use, then the paper analyzes …

Friction Stir Welding as an Effective Alternative Technique for Light Structural Alloys Mixed Joints

2014

Abstract The increasing use of structural light alloys in the aeronautical, automotive and transportation industry is pushing researchers to find new solutions for the production of innovative components. Mixed joints made out dissimilar alloys represent a challenge for engineers to the difficulties arising in welding materials characterized by significantly different mechanical, thermal and chemical properties. In the paper, an overview of the most used process to produce dissimilar joints of aluminum, magnesium and titanium is given. Both fusion based and solid state welding processes can be used. Although the joining of these materials is possible, particular attention must be taken to t…

Salkowski curves revisited: A family of curves with constant curvature and non-constant torsion

2009

In the paper [Salkowski, E., 1909. Zur Transformation von Raumkurven, Mathematische Annalen 66 (4), 517-557] published one century ago, a family of curves with constant curvature but non-constant torsion was defined. We characterize them as space curves with constant curvature and whose normal vector makes a constant angle with a fixed line. The relation between these curves and rational curves with double Pythagorean hodograph is studied. A method to construct closed curves, including knotted curves, of constant curvature and continuous torsion using pieces of Salkowski curves is outlined.

Explicit polynomial solutions of fourth order linear elliptic Partial Differential Equations for boundary based smooth surface generation

2011

We present an explicit polynomial solution method for surface generation. In this case the surface in question is characterized by some boundary configuration whereby the resulting surface conforms to a fourth order linear elliptic Partial Differential Equation, the Euler–Lagrange equation of a quadratic functional defined by a norm. In particular, the paper deals with surfaces generated as explicit Bézier polynomial solutions for the chosen Partial Differential Equation. To present the explicit solution methodologies adopted here we divide the Partial Differential Equations into two groups namely the orthogonal and the non-orthogonal cases. In order to demonstrate our methodology we discus…

A NEW PROGRESSIVE DESIGN METHODOLOGY FOR COMPLEX SHEET METAL STAMPING OPERATIONS: COUPLING SPATIALLY DIFFERENTIATED RESTRAINING FORCES APPROACH AND M…

2010

The growing interest in sheet metal stamping processes, particularly in the automotive industry has led to three main issues in this field:*request of very complex shapes; *growing interest in springback control; *solution of multi-objective problems. These issues make a sheet metal stamping processes design very difficult and proper design methodologies to reduce times and costs are highly required. In this paper, a computer aided approach aiming to satisfy the mentioned issues is proposed. In particular, a progressive design approach based on the integration between numerical simulations, Response Surface Methodology (RSM) and Pareto optimal solutions search techniques was applied in orde…

Limit Analysis of Structures with Stochastic Strength Variations∗

1972

Abstract On the basis of a probabilistic fomulation of the fundamental theorems of “limit analysis,” a procedure is developed which allows, with a very limited amount of computing work, the determination of a domain containing the probability distribution curve of the collapse load factor of any structure that satisfies the usual conditions for validity of the limit analysis, but has randomly distributed limit strengths. Further improvements of the bounds thus obtained can be achieved by the equivalent of either the equilibrium or the kinematic methods of limit analysis.

Parked electric car's cabin heat management using photovoltaic powered ventilation system

2019

Abstract This paper explores the use of electric car roof mounted photovoltaic (PV) powered ventilation for cabin heat management/ventilation. A fully-functional Renault Zoe electric car has been used for performance evaluation of parked electric car ventilation directly powered by PV. This work has been part of a research project of testing electric cars in the urban environment and it has been conducted at the Edinburgh Napier University’s Transport Research Institute. In this work, parked electric car ventilation has been reported, when roof-mounted PV modules were used to operate DC powered fans for ventilation. It has been found that the DC motor-fan selection for removing the hot air …

Systemic analysis of the caulking assembly process

2017

The present paper highlights the importance of a caulking process which is nowadays less studied in comparison with the growing of its usage in the automotive industry. Due to the fact that the caulking operation is used in domains with high importance such as shock absorbers and brake systems there comes the demand of this paper to detail the parameters which characterize the process, viewed as input data and output data, and the requirements asked for the final product. The paper presents the actual measurement methods used for analysis the performance of the caulking assembly. All this parameters leads to an analysis algorithm of performance established for the caulking process which it …

Study of the implementation of SPIF as a Reshaping strategy in terms of formability and accuracy performance

2022

The adaption of circular economy strategies has become increasingly necessary in current times. Researches need to be addressed on finding alternative processes or the modification of the existing processes in order to reprocess End-of-Life (EoL) components and consequently recover both materials and their functions. This research paper focuses on the use of single point incremental forming (SPIF) process for the Reshaping of sheet metal EoL components. Uniaxial and biaxial pre-straining was performed on AA5754 sheets to imitate an end-of-life component, and SPIF operations were carried out so as to obtain reshaped components. In previous works, the authors have proven the technical feasibi…
