Assessing the Commodity Market Price and Terms of Trade Exposures of Macroeconomy in Emerging and Developing Countries

2021

This paper provides novel evidence on commodity market exposure, i.e., the impacts of commodity price and terms of trade fluctuations on macro performance amongst 46 emerging and developing countries (EMDCs) in Africa, Asia and the Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) region. We estimate the exposure of six macroeconomic variables to the commodity prices and terms of trade. Our results indicate that in overall terms, there is a strong and statistically significant long-run relationship between the vector of analyzed world trade prices and macro variables in all EMDCs. However, based on the short-term reactions, only about 10% of the macroeconomic variation amongst the EMDCs is due to commodit…

Naratīvs un autora identitāte mašīntulkošanā

2017

Šajā bakalaura darbā tiek aprakstīts naratīvs un autora identitāte mašīntulkošanā. Bakalaura darbs sastāv no 4 nodaļām: pirmajā nodaļā tiek apskatīta teorija par mašīntulkošanu un pieejamajiem tulkošanas rīkiem latviešu-somugru valodu pārī; otrajā nodaļā aprakstītas literatūrzinātnieku idejas par autora identitāti un lasītāja lomu literārajos darbos; trešajā nodaļā ar tulkošanas teorijas palīdzību tiek analizēta tulkotāja loma autora iecerētā vēstījuma nodošanā; ceturtajā nodaļā tiek novērtēts, salīdzināts un analizēts, kā Google mašīntulkotāja un cilvēka veiktais tulkojums ietekmē teksta naratīvu. Rezultāti parāda, ka mašīntulkotājs nevar aizvietot kvalitatīvus cilvēka tulkojumus, bet tas …

Plagiarism and predatory journals: A threat to scientific integrity

2018

This article presents an analysis of the concept of plagiarism in order to show the wide spectrum of manifestations that can be considered as such when committing a transgression of intellectual property, carried out with the intention of deceiving the authors’ true contribution and the originality and novelty of the information. It describes the different circumstances in which intentional plagiarism has occurred, and the damage that this misconduct causes in the credibility of the scientific system, in which authorship credit is the foundation of the academic career, of the prestige of the author in the scientific community, and the basis for financing research. Some circumstances are fav…

Monetary policy and exchange rate dynamics in the Spanish economy

1999

As the Spanish economy gets more integrated in international markets, the real exchange rate becomes a key determinant of the monetary transmission. In this paper we trace out the dynamic response of prices, output and the exchange rate following a monetary policy shock. We estimate a structural VAR model whose identification scheme is based on the long run properties common to a large class of models. The results suggest that a small model with efficient asset markets plus nominal inertia and long run monetary neutrality, captures the essential features of the monetary transmission mechanism in Spain. The interest rate shock is well identified and the exchange rate overshoots its long run …

EEG-based biometrics: effects of template ageing

2020

This chapter discusses the effects of template ageing in EEG-based biometrics. The chapter also serves as an introduction to general biometrics and its main tasks: Identification and verification. To do so, we investigate different characterisations of EEG signals and examine the difference of performance in subject identification between single session and cross-session identification experiments. In order to do this, EEG signals are characterised with common state-of-the-art features, i.e. Mel Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCC), Autoregression Coefficients, and Power Spectral Density-derived features. The samples were later classified using various classifiers, including Support Vecto…

Modulation of melanoma-associated antigens by monoclonal antibodies as visualized by radioimmunoelectron microscopy and radioantibody binding assay

1987

There is a wealth of information about monoclonal antibody (MAb) specificity and function on fixed tissues, yet little is known about formation and release of antigen-antibody complexes and their functional behavior in vivo. We analyzed the pathway of radiolabeled MAbs directed against melanoma-associated antigens by radioimmunoelectron microscopy (RIEM) on metabolically active cells of the melanoma cell lines SK-MEL-28, MeWo and Colo 38 at different time intervals. In parallel, binding and release of MAbs were investigated by the radioantibody binding assay (RBA). Both procedures gave essentially concordant results. Preferentially stable binding of immune complexes (ICs) to the cell surfac…

Effects of physical provocations on heart rate reactivity and reactive aggression in children

2006

This article presents complementary data on the relationship between the intensity of offensive and defensive aggression that was investigated by means of the computerised Pulkkinen Aggression Machine (PAM) paradigm [Juujarvi et al., 2001; Aggr Behav 27:430-445]. The recording of the electrocardiogram was conducted in a sample of 109 children (61 boys and 48 girls) while they completed the PAM. Across the conditions of controlled aggression, the simulated attack and defence evoked a mean increase of HR by 2.7 beats per minute (bpm), but the variation between children was substantial (-10.9 to +11.4 bpm). Children who showed a strong HR increase, moderate HR increase, or HR decrease were com…

Noninvasive assessment of baroreflex sensitivity in post-MI patients by an open loop parametric model of RR-systolic pressure interactions

2003

Noninvasive evaluation of baroreflex sensitivity is considered an important goal for diagnosis and prognosis in post-MI patients. Methodological approach and physiological measure conditions may be the main causes for the differences found with respect to the standard Phenylephrine test. In this study, three linear parametric models, describing variability and mutual interactions of RR interval and systolic arterial pressure (SAP), were compared in relation to their ability to quantify baroreflex gain, using the Phenylephrine test index (Phe/sub BRS/) as reference. By monovariate autoregressive (AR) model, bivariate AR model and open loop ARXAR model, specific gain indexes (/spl alpha//sub …
