Assessing plant diversity and composition in grasslands across spatial scales: the standardised EDGG sampling methodology
2016
This paper presents the details of the EDGG sampling methodology and its underlying rationales. The methodology has been applied during EDGG Research Expeditions and EDGG Field Workshops since 2009, and has been subsequently adopted by various other researchers. The core of the sampling are the EDGG Biodiversity Plots, which are 100‐m2 squares comprising, in two opposite corners, nested‐plot series of 0.0001, 0.001, 0.01, 0.1, 1 and 10 m2 square plots, in which all terricolous vascular plants, bryophytes and lichens are recorded using the shoot presence method. In the 10‐m2 plots, species cover is also estimated as a percentage and various environmental and structural parameters are recorde…
Knowledge behaviors when the commons are at stake: Insights from the Covid-19 crisis
2020
How do people’s beliefs on the likely system-level consequences of circulating a certain piece of knowledge influence those people’s knowledge behaviors? To address this question, we leverage the most recent developments of the theory of the commons as learning systems. According to this theory, people are strongly responsive to perceived threats to the commons they (may) benefit from, and strive to learn and respond accordingly. Through this theoretical lens, we analyze thick qualitative data (January-April 2020) from the Covid-19 crisis, which resulted in unprecedented visibility of commons-related knowledge behaviors. The contribution of this inductive study is fourfold. First, we identi…
Connectedness and connectivity of the Natura 2000 network of protected areas across country borders in the European Union
2012
Abstract We studied the spatial connectedness of Natura 2000 site boundaries and the functional connectivity of the Natura 2000 network across the 34 terrestrial borders of the European Union. Connectivity was measured by the dispersal success of 192 reptile, amphibian, invertebrate and plant species from Annex II of the European Union Habitats Directive, based on the presence of same species on both sides of the borders. Connectedness and connectivity varied greatly between state borders, with good and bad examples found in all parts of the European Union. Connectedness and connectivity were positively correlated. However, a few outlying examples showed that good connectedness is not neces…
The character and origin of the manuscripts in the present edition
1995
In the following I try to provide the reader with all the details needed to insert the Godel essays appearing here in the broader context of the rest of his unpublished work, as well as everything about my personal work on them. I start with a short description of what can be found in the Godel Nachlass in Princeton, USA, by referring to the catalogue prepared by John Dawson. Then I attempt to justify the particular selection I made of the manuscripts which I finally decided to study, reconstruct and publish. Such an explanation seems to be advisable given the great amount of Godel’s material unpublished but still extant. Also, I describe some of the historical details relevant to understan…
Soil interpretation in the context of anthropedogenic transformations and pedotechniques application
2018
Abstract Following a long and vigorous study carried out by the International Committee on Anthropogenic Soils (ICOMANTH), the Soil Taxonomy (ST) classification system recently incorporated a number of changes to include Human-Altered and Human-Transported soils, generally called anthropogenic soils. These changes underwent careful scrutiny as they affect the current classification of existing soil series, and as the proposals and logics are as yet untested against existing data and descriptions. Particular attention was given to the diagnostic characteristics of the anthropogenic soils and to the Subgroups for Human-Altered and Human-Transported soils. In this study, we consider a frequent…

A Poem for All Seasons: Alcuin’s “O vos, est aetas”
2017
There is no complete account of the transmission of Alcuin’s poems, which is apparently quite unpredictable if not random. The circulation of a number of short compositions, which accompany his treatises and his letters, and their circulation together, is so far uncharted. Particularly intriguing is the manuscript tradition of “O vos, est aetas,” a poem in seven distichs, in which young men are encouraged to learn rhetoric and to cultivate virtue. The poem generally occurs in connection with two prose works by Alcuin, the De dialectica (henceforth DD) and the Disputatio de rhetorica et virtutibus (henceforth DR). It may be copied either between the two treatises, before the prologue poem of…
Variability of the Level of Development of Functopnal Urban Areas
2018
Miejskie obszary funkcjonalne mają istotne znaczenie w realizacji zarówno Krajowej Polityki Miejskiej 2023, jak i terytorialnej polityki rozwoju. Celem badania jest określenie poziomu rozwoju obszarów funkcjonalnych miast wojewódzkich Polski. Badania przeprowadzono z wykorzystaniem metody taksonomicznej w ujęciu dynamicznym obejmującym okres 2005-2015. Podstawę wyznaczenia wielkości taksonomicznych stanowił zestaw wskaźników diagnostycznych ujętych w trzech wymiarach rozwoju: społecznym, gospodarczym i środowiskowym. W ramach badania została podjęta ocena poziomu rozwoju miast centralnych MOF oraz oddzielnie miast i gmin ich otoczenia. Dodatkowo określono poziom rozwoju każdego z wymiarów r…
Phylogeny, epidemiology and microhabitat preferences of lungworms (Pseudaliidae) in cetaceans from teh Western Mediterranean
2023
On the Occurrence of Caffeoyltartronic Acid and Other Phenolics in Chondrilla juncea
1993
Abstract Caffeoyltartronic acid and other eleven phenolic com pounds were identified in the MeOH extract of Chondrilla juncea: the flavonoids luteolin, luteolin-7-glucoside, luteolin-7-galactosylglucuronide and quercetin-3-galactoside; the phenolic acids protocatechuic, caffeic, chlorogenic, isochlorogenic and isoferulic and the coumarins cichoriin and aesculetin. The taxonomic im plications of these com pounds have been discussed.
