Efficient Parallel Sort on AVX-512-Based Multi-Core and Many-Core Architectures

Sorting kernels are a fundamental part of numerous applications. The performance of sorting implementations is usually limited by a variety of factors such as computing power, memory bandwidth, and branch mispredictions. In this paper we propose an efficient hybrid sorting method which takes advantage of wide vector registers and the high bandwidth memory of modern AVX-512-based multi-core and many-core processors. Our approach employs a combination of vectorized bitonic sorting and load-balanced multi-threaded merging. Pair-wise potentials are widely used in MD simulations of bio-molecules, polymers, and nano-scale materials. Due to a low compute-to-memory-access ratio, their calculation is often bounded by memory transfer speeds. Combining congested-flow isolation and injection throttling in HPC interconnection networks

Existing congestion control mechanisms in interconnects can be divided into two general approaches. One is to throttle traffic injection at the sources that contribute to congestion, and the other is to isolate the congested traffic in specially designated resources. These two approaches have different, but non-overlapping weaknesses. In this paper we present in detail a method that combines injection throttling and congested-flow isolation. Through simulation studies we first demonstrate the respective flaws of the injection throttling and of flow isolation. Enhancing the sound absorption of small-scale 3D printed acoustic metamaterials based on Helmholtz resonators

Acoustic metamaterials have recently become of interest for their ability to attenuate sound by breaking the mass-density law. In this paper, acoustic metamaterials based on Helmholtz resonators and capable of attenuating sound up to 30 dB are fabricated for sound absorption applications in the small scale. The proposed metamaterials are subwavelength at a factor of $\lambda /12$ with respect to the lateral dimension of the units. The directional response due to the position of the acoustic source on the sound attenuation provided by the metamaterial is investigated by controlling the location of a loudspeaker with a robot arm. On the estimation of the fatigue cycle distribution from spectral density data

This paper deals with the fatigue life prediction of components and structures subjected to random fatigue, i.e. to cyclic loading whose amplitude varies in an essentially random manner. In particular, this study concentrates on the general problem of directly relating fatigue cycle distribution to the power spectral density (PSD) by means of closed-form expressions that avoid expensive digital simulations of the stress process. Right inferior frontal gyrus implements motor inhibitory control via beta-band oscillations in humans

Motor inhibitory control implemented as response inhibition is an essential cognitive function required to dynamically adapt to rapidly changing environments. Despite over a decade of research on the neural mechanisms of response inhibition, it remains unclear, how exactly response inhibition is initiated and implemented. Using a multimodal MEG/fMRI approach in 59 subjects, our results reliably reveal that response inhibition is initiated by the right inferior frontal gyrus (rIFG) as a form of attention-independent top-down control that involves the modulation of beta-band activity.
