Computerized brain tomography measures compared with spontaneous and suppressed plasma cortisol levels in major depression.

We determined brain density and ventricular measurements with computerized tomography (CT) in 33 depressed patients and compared the results with basal plasma cortisol and its suppressibility by dexamethasone. Mean plasma cortisol was positively related to elevated ventricular brain ratio (VBR). No association could be found between dexamethasone suppression test (DST) status and VBR or any other CT parameter. Serum hormones in male strength athletes during intensive short term strength training

Training-induced adaptations in the endocrine system and strength development were investigated in nine male strength athletes during two separate 3-week intensive strength training periods. The overall amount of training in the periods was maintained at the same level. In both cases the training in the first 2 weeks was very intensive: this was followed by a 3rd week when the overall amount of training was greatly decreased. The two training periods differed only in that training period I included one daily session, while during the first 2 weeks of period II the same amount of training was divided between two daily sessions. Blood transfusion and iron chelation currently represent a supportive therapy to manage anemia, vasculopathy and vaso-occlusion crises in Sickle-Cell-Disease. Here we describe the first 5-year long-term randomized clinical trial comparing Deferiprone versus Deferoxamine in patients with Sickle-Cell-Disease. The results of this study show that Deferiprone has the same effectiveness as Deferoxamine in decreasing body iron burden, measured as repeated measurements of serum ferritin concentrations on the same patient over 5-years and analyzed according to the linear mixed-effects model (LMM) (p=0.822). Acute and chronic administration of ethanol leads to alterations of the adenylyl cyclase (AC) signal transduction pathway. This study examined whether the formation of cAMP by AC in lymphocytes correlates with age in alcoholic patients and in healthy controls. After infusion of 500 ml of 6% hydroxyethyl starch into fifty-four patients an increase of serum amylase was observed which in fifty-one cases exceeded the upper limit of normal (190 U/l). In most cases serum amylase reached twice the basal value. Renal function influenced the duration of the increase in serum amylase, but not the maximum increase (201+/-15 U/l; mean+/-SEM). In patients with advanced renal failure (glomerular filtration rate (GFR) = 2-10 ml/min) serum amylase was still markedly elevated after 72 h (298+/-24 U/l; mean+/-SEM). The modifications can involve lipids, proteins and nucleic acids, and different effects seem to be induced by regular and acute exercise respectively. Histological abnormalities in patients with multiple esophageal webs

Two cases of multiple esophageal webs are presented. Histological evaluation of multiple esophageal biopsies revealed marked basal cell hyperplasia along the whole length of the esophagus. In one case these mucosal alterations remained unchanged during several years of follow-up.
