Summary This study aims at the in situ identification of factors mediating glioma cell invasion requiring adhesion, extracellular matrix degradation, and migration. Fortyfive gliomas (astrocytomas, glioblastomas, oligodendrogliomas, and mixed gliomas) were investigated for the immunohistochemical expression of the membrane protein CD44s, the basal lamina proteins laminin, collagen IV, and fibronectin, the lectin galectin-3 recognizing tenascin and N-CAM, as well as for the matrix-degrading enzymes metalloproteinases MMP-2, MMP-9, and cathepsin D. Urothelial Leukoplakia: New Aspects of Etiology and Therapy

AbstractWe describe 3 women in 1 family who had systemic urothelial leukoplakia with no underlying pathological condition of the urinary tract. Irritative clinical symptoms resolved, and the macroscopic and microscopic appearance improved after 6 months of therapy with sodium pentosan-polysulfate. Electron microscopy showed special cells in the basal layer of the cornified squamous epithelium that also have been found in the trigone of women with so-called squamous metaplasia. Their similarity to Merkel’s cells of the skin supports the theory that ectodermal cells are misplaced during embryogenesis. Distribution and phenotype ofGJB2mutations in 102 Sicilian patients with congenital non syndromic sensorineural hearing loss

Objective: To evaluate the frequency of GJB2 mutations and their correlation with phenotype in Sicilian non-syndromic sensorineural hearing loss (NSHL) patients. Design: Sequencing of the coding region, basal promoter, exon 1, and donor splice site of the GJB2 gene; screening for the presence of the two common GJB6 deletions. Study sample: A cohort of 102 Sicilian NSHL patients. Results: Fifteen different mutations in GJB2 and seventeen different genotypes were detected. No GJB6 mutations were found. This study was carried out to further characterize the pituitary-adrenal androgen responses of hyperandrogenic patients with 'classic' polycystic ovary syndrome (PCO) and others who were less distinctive and have been called 'PCO-like'. PCO-like patients differed from PCO only in that serum luteinizing hormone (LH) levels were normal and anovulation was not consistent. Ovine corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) resulted in normal responses of adrenocorticotropic hormone and cortisol in the two groups when compared to controls, while androstenedione (delta 4A) and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) responses were significantly elevated. The change in pressure of competent and incompetent lower esophageal sphincter (LES) due to abdominal compression is still a controversial subject. Therefore, we studied the effect of sustained (SAC) and intermittent (IAC) abdominal compression on lower esophageal sphincter pressure (LESP) in normals (N), patients with hiatus hernia (HH), and patients with scleroderma (S). When resting lower esophageal sphincter pressure exceeded 15 mm Hg, response to SAC and IAC was similar in patients with HH and in normals. The aim of this study was to investigate the long-term prognosis for squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus treated either by the transhiatal (TH) or by the transthoracic (TT) operative approach.Two hundred and twenty-nine patients (median age: 56 (29-84) years) with squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus underwent esophageal resection between September 1985 and April 2004. In 70 patients, the transhiatal approach and in 159, the transthoracic approach was applied. We examined effects of 21 weeks of strength and/or endurance training and nutrition on serum hormones and physical fitness in 39-64-year-old women. Subjects (n=79) were randomized into the endurance group (E), strength group (S), combined group (SE) and controls (C). Total body strength training and high-intensity bicycle training were used. Average energy and nutrient intake remained the same in all groups. Body fat (dual energy X-ray absorptiometry) decreased significantly in all training groups and body mass index in E, SE and C. Only SE increased total body lean mass (2.2%, p=0.001), between groups p=0.044. Maximal cycling power increased more in E (16%) and SE (17%) than in S (8%)(all …
