The dynamics of slug trains in volcanic conduits: Evidence for expansion driven slug coalescence
2017
Strombolian volcanism is a ubiquitous form of activity, driven by the ascent and bursting of bubbles of slug morphology. Whilst considerable attention has been devoted to understanding the behaviour of individual slugs in this regime, relatively little is known about how inter-slug interactions modify flow conditions. Recently, we reported on high temporal frequency strombolian activity on Etna, in which the larger erupted slug masses were followed by longer intervals before the following explosion than the smaller bursts (Pering et al., 2015). We hypothesised that this behaviour arose from the coalescence of ascending slugs causing a prolonged lag before arrival of the next distinct bubble…
Geochemical discrimination of basaltic sources as a tool for provenance analyses of bifacial tools in the southern Levant: first results from the Jez…
2013
Abstract The determination of groundstone tool sources bears the potential to examine aspects like raw material selection and preference, mobility, trade and exchange patterns, control over resources and long term use of raw material sources. The discovery of the Neolithic/Chalcolithic basanite bifacial quarry of Giv'at Kipod in the Jezreel Valley, Israel, provides the opportunity of raw material centred provenance studies of bifacials in the southern Levant. The basis for reliable provenance analyses is a clear geochemical characterization of the extraction site and its discrimination from other potential sources. To achieve this, the Miocene magmatic rocks of the Jezreel Valley were sampl…
Pigmented desmoplastic trichilemmoma
2016
Desmoplastic trichilemmoma (DT), the pseudomalignant variant of conventional trichilemmoma described by Hunt et al in 1990, displays a superficial lobular growth pattern of glycogen-rich cells with peripheral nuclear palisading surrounded by a thickened basement membrane. DT differs from its conventional counterpart by showing a central hyalinized area with epithelial cords and strands mimicking invasive carcinoma. We report a case that fully satisfies the criteria for DT and, in addition, shows an extensive melanocytic cell component and prominent melanin deposition. To our knowledge, a pigmented variant of DT has not been reported and should be recognized in order to appropriately face th…
Detection of Type VII collagen in odontogenic keratocyst: An immunohistochemical study
2019
Background Separation of the epithelial lining from the underlying connective tissue wall has been a frequently observed and unique feature in odontogenic keratocysts (OKC), but not in other odontogenic cysts nor neoplasms. No study on OKC has been reported evaluating the role of type VII Collagen, the anchoring fibrils, which function in stabilising the epithelial structure. The purpose of this study was to assess the role of type VII collagen in the fragility of the epithelium leading to a high recurrence rate in OKCs. Material and Methods Immunohistochemical staining with Abcam® Monoclonal Mouse Anti-Collagen VII Antibody [LH7.2] (used at a dilution of 1:200) on 30 tissues of OKC. The ch…

Adrenic acid Δ4 desaturation and fatty acid composition in the liver of marine-oil fed streptozotocin diabetic rats
1998
The aim of the present study was to assess the effect of streptozotocin diabetes and insulin treatment on adrenic acid delta4 desaturation and fatty acid composition of liver microsomes in Wistar rats fed a fat free semi-synthetic basal diet supplemented with 10% EPA-rich marine oil. Results showed that, in liver microsomes of hyperglycemic rats, the 22:6n-3/22:5n-3 ratio in total lipids was elevated and desaturation of adrenic acid to n-6 docosapentaenoic acid was enhanced. Insulin treatment with 2.0 I.U./100 g body weight-1 twice a day for 3 days resulted in hypoglycemia and suppressed both the increased delta4 n-6 desaturation and 22:6n-3/22:5n-3 ratio. It is concluded that the delta4 de…
Effects of Two Months of Very Low Carbohydrate Ketogenic Diet on Body Composition, Muscle Strength, Muscle Area, and Blood Parameters in Competitive …
2021
Background: Ketogenic diet (KD) is a nutritional approach that restricts daily carbohydrates, replacing most of the reduced energy with fat, while maintaining an adequate quantity of protein. Despite the widespread use of KD in weight loss in athletes, there are still many concerns about its use in sports requiring muscle mass accrual. Thus, the present study sought to investigate the influence of a KD in competitive natural body builders. Methods: Nineteen volunteers (27.4 ±
Altered cellular magnesium responsiveness to hyperglycemia in hypertensive subjects.
2001
Abstract — — Previous studies by our group have identified ionic aspects of insulin resistance in hypertension, in which cellular responses to insulin were influenced by the basal intracellular ionic environment—the lower the cytosolic free magnesium (Mg i ), the less Mg i increased following insulin stimulation. To investigate whether this ionic insulin resistance represents a more general abnormality of cellular responsiveness in hypertension, we studied Mg i responses to nonhormonal signals such as hyperglycemia (15 mmol/L) and used 31 P-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy to measure Mg i in erythrocytes from normal (NL, n=14) and hypertensive (HTN, n=12) subjects before and 3…
Neuroprotective effect of erythropoietin and darbepoetin alfa after experimental intracerebral hemorrhage.
2009
OBJECTIVE: Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is a devastating clinical syndrome for which no truly efficacious therapy has yet been identified. In preclinical studies, erythropoietin (EPO) and its long-lasting analog, darbepoetin alfa, have been demonstrated to be neuroprotective in several models of neuronal insult. The objectives of this study were to analyze whether the systemic administration of recombinant human EPO (rHuEPO) and its long-lasting derivative darbepoetin alfa expedited functional recovery and brain damage in a rat model of ICH. METHODS: Experimental ICH was induced in rats by injecting autologous blood into the right striatum under stereotactic guidance. Subsequently, animal…
Interrelations between globus pallidus and hippocampal epilepsy in the cat (1)
1984
AbstractElectrically induced afterdischarge (ADs) were evoked in the cats' dorsal hippocampus. The action of the conditioning prestimulation of the pallidus nucleus on AD duration was studied. A significant facilitatory influence was observed when pallidal conditioning stimulation immediately preceded hippocampal test stimulation. The time course of the phenomenon showed a decrease of the conditioning action when the interval between the two stimulations increased: complete disappearance of the effect occurred after about 800 ms. Results are discussed as far as functional relationships between basal ganglia and rhinencephalic system are concerned.
