Centrins, gatekeepers for the light-dependent translocation of transducin through the photoreceptor cell connecting cilium

Centrins are members of a highly conserved subgroup of the EF-hand superfamily of Ca(2+)-binding proteins commonly associated with centrosome-related structures. In the retina, centrins are also prominent components of the photoreceptor cell ciliary apparatus. Centrin isoforms are differentially localized at the basal body and in the lumen of the connecting cilium. All molecular exchanges between the inner and outer segments occur through this narrow connecting cilium. Ca(2+)-activated centrin isoforms bind to the visual heterotrimeric G-protein transducin via an interaction with the betagamma-subunit. Effect of claustrum stimulation on neurons of the contralateral medial oculomotor area, in the cat

In chloralose-anaesthetized cats, the extracellular spontaneous unitary activity was recorded from 157 neurons, located in the medial oculomotor area. 98 units were identified as projecting onto the superior colliculus. Electrical stimulations of the contralateral claustrum provoked, on 13 of these cells, an excitatory effect, lasting 10-35 ms and appearing with a latency of 20-50 ms. Full length section of the corpus callosum totally abolished the contralateral claustrum effect. The results suggest that in the cat, the claustrum may have a role in the bilateral control of the visuo-motor performance.

Mutations in SLC20A2 link familial idiopathic basal ganglia calcification with phosphate homeostasis.

Familial idiopathic basal ganglia calcification (IBGC) is a genetic condition with a wide spectrum of neuropsychiatric symptoms, including parkinsonism and dementia. Here, we identified mutations in SLC20A2, encoding the type III sodium-dependent phosphate transporter 2 (PiT2), in IBGC-affected families of varied ancestry, and we observed significantly impaired phosphate transport activity for all assayed PiT2 mutants in Xenopus laevis oocytes. Our results implicate altered phosphate homeostasis in the etiology of IBGC.

Molecular phylogeny of parabasalids with emphasis on the order Cristamonadida and its complex morphological evolution

Joubert syndrome (JBTS) and related disorders are defined by cerebellar malformation (molar tooth sign), together with neurological symptoms of variable expressivity. The ciliary basis of Joubert syndrome related disorders frequently extends the phenotype to tissues such as the eye, kidney, skeleton and craniofacial structures. Using autozygome and exome analyses, we identified a null mutation in KIAA0556 in a multiplex consanguineous family with hallmark features of mild Joubert syndrome. In energetic terms, fitness may be seen to be dependent on successful allocation of energy between life-history traits. In addition, fitness will be constrained by the energy allocation ability, which has also been defined as condition. We suggest here that the allocation ability, estimated as the difference between total energy budget and maintenance metabolism, may be used as a measure of condition. Abstract The restructuring of primary spermatocytes of Adelocera murina, a click beetle, is described using electron microscopy of ultrathin sections. Emphasis is on spherical or rod-shaped cytoplasmic inclusions, invested by a unit membrane. The content of the inclusions is slightly more electron-dense than that of the surrounding cytoplasm and homogeneously textured in most cases. The inclusions are missing in spermatogonia but are abundant in prophase I through anaphase I spermatocytes. Their number declines in telophase I. Basal cell carcinoma is the most common malignant tumor among fair-skinned individuals, and its incidence has been rising steadily in the past decades. In order to maintain the highest quality of patient care possible, the German S2k guidelines were updated following a systematic literature search and with the participation of all professional societies and associations involved in the management of the disease. Pachyjoenia howa, a new symbiotic parabasalid joeniid flagellate of the termite Postelectrotermes howa

The Joenia-like lophomonad of Postelectrotermes howa is identified by light and electron microscopy as a new genus and species Pachyjoenia howa. Its flagellar area of about 1800 flagella is dome shaped. Basal bodies bear a composite root oriented counterclockwise in addition to the clockwise hook-shaped lamina present in other joeniids. There are four parallel privileged basal bodies. The main parabasal fibre is twisted around the axostyle and splits into several branches bearing Golgi bodies. The axostyle trunk is conspicuous and composed of a bundle of ∼90 small axostyles.
