Environmental DNA analysis indicates that migration barriers are decreasing the occurrence of European eel (Anguilla anguilla) in distance from the s…

2020

Abstract The European eel (Anguilla L.) is considered critically endangered by the IUCN Red List, and recruitment remains low. One of the challenges for the species today is migration barriers that limit their habitat. Along the Norwegian coast, like in other countries, the abundance of eels appears to decrease with distance from the sea. This pattern may be a result of factors like water temperature, water quality, competition, and habitat suitability and availability. This study aims to use environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis to investigate the potential relationship between migration barriers and the decreasing occurrence of eels in distance from the sea by the coast of southern Norway. Si…

Time-point and dosage of gene inactivation determine the tumor spectrum in conditional Ptch knockouts

2009

Mutations in Patched (PTCH) have been associated with tumors characteristic both for children [medulloblastoma (MB) and rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS)] and for elderly [basal cell carcinoma (BCC)]. The determinants of the variability in tumor onset and histology are unknown. We investigated the effects of the time-point and dosage of Ptch inactivation on tumor spectrum using conditional Ptch-knockout mice. Ptch heterozygosity induced prenatally resulted in the formation of RMS, which was accompanied by the silencing of the remaining wild-type Ptch allele. In contrast, RMS was observed neither after mono- nor biallelic postnatal deletion of Ptch. Postnatal biallelic deletion of Ptch led to BCC preca…

Intraoral epithelioid hemangioendothelioma: a case report and review of the literature.

2009

The epithelioid hemangioendothelioma (EH) is an uncommon angiocentric neoplasm of borderline or intermediate malignant potential, between the hemangioma and conventional angiosarcoma. It is characterized by the proliferation of endothelial cells with epithelioid or histiocitóide morphology with vacuolated cytoplasm and occasional eosinophilic spindle cells. Shows potential for local recurrence as well as the ability to metastasize. Rarely affects the oral cavity, it have been described from 1975 until 2008 only 27 oral cases. Morphologically the EHs may be confused with other lesions, from a hemangioma to a squamous cell carcinoma, and thus immunohistochemical analysis is required. This pap…

Pathomechanism of Brain Oedema in Experimental Intracerebral Mass Haemorrhage

1988

The prognosis of intracerebral haemorrhage is extremely poor when arterial hypertension is present. We investigated elastance of the brain tissue and brain hydraulic conductivity in normotensive (MAP ~ 110 mmHg) and hypertensive (MAP ~ 170 mmHg/angiotensin infusion) cats following a stereotactically produced intracerebral haemorrhage. For 12 hours after the onset of haemorrhage we registered the course of ICP, subsequently the water content of cortex, white matter and basal ganglia as well as the interstitial concentration of serum proteins in the corresponding regions were determined (Evans-Blue, immunofluorescence). Hypertension was associated with a slight increase in ICP and tissue wate…

Proliferative verrucous leukoplakia, squamous cell carcinoma and axillary metastasis.

2009

Proliferative verrucous leukoplakia (PVL) is an aggressive form of oral leukoplakia with multifocal presentation, high rates of recurrence and malignant transformation. Although development of regional lymph node metastasis is relatively frequent in patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma, axillary metastasis is quite uncommon. This paper presents a case of a 64-year-old female patient who was diagnosed with PVL and developed five oral squamous cell carcinomas and later an axillary lymph node metastasis.

Analysis of Metabolic Parameters Coming from Basal and Interim PET in Hodgkin Lymphoma

2018

Objective: Positron Emission Tomography (PET) with F-18-Fluoro-deoxy-glucose (FDG) emerged as a prognostic tool to predict treatment outcome in Hodgkin Lymphoma (HL). Moreover, a FDG-PET adapted strategy is currently assessed in clinical trial to minimize the toxic effect while maintaining the efficacy of treatment in HL. Purpose was to analyze the quantitative parameters to support the prognostic role of FDG-PET today based on the semi-quantitative Deauville 5-point Scale (D5-PS). Methods: This retrospective study included 53 patients diagnosed with advanced-stage HL between 2009 and 2014, enrolled in the PET response-adapted clinical trial HD 0607. FDG-PET was performed at baseline (PET0)…

Desmoplastic ameloblastoma of maxilla: a case report

2010

Ameloblastoma is the most common neoplasm affecting the jaws, arising from the odontogenic epithelium. Despite its locally aggressive nature, it is considered to be benign. The chief histopathological variants of ameloblastoma are the follicular and plexiform types, followed by the acanthomatous and granular cell types. Uncommon variants include desmoplastic, basal cell, clear cell ameloblastoma, keratoameloblastoma and papilliferous keratoameloblastoma. When the desmoplastic type co-exists with other types, it is called as “hybrid” ameloblastoma. There are significant anatomic, histopathological and radiological differences between desmoplastic ameloblastoma and the classical type. The pur…

Early development of human Merkel cells.

1992

Human fetal Merkel cells are now generally considered to be epidermal derivatives. Previous studies using antibodies against the simple epithelial cytokeratins (CKs), 8 and 18, have demonstrated the presence of these cells in the epidermis at as early as fetal week 10 to 12. Using antibodies against CK 20 whose expression within the skin is restricted to Merkel cells, we applied immunofluorescence and immunoperoxidase microscopy to analyze earlier embryonic and fetal human skin (wk 7 to 9). We were able to demonstrate the first Merkel cells at as early as fetal wk 8, i.e., at the same time as the epidermis starts to develop an intermediate, third layer, characterized by the expression of CK…

Utility of imaging techniques in the diagnosis of oral cancer.

2015

Abstract Purpose Imaging techniques such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT), and positron emission tomography (PET) are often used to complement the clinical exploration and staging of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Which of these techniques is best in establishing correct staging and treatment planning is not clear, however. This study aims to determine which technique is most appropriate for diagnosing the primary tumor and for detecting bone invasion and neck metastases. Material and methods A Medline literature search was made over the last 10 years. In each selected study, we recorded the sample size and sensitivity, specificity and precision. Strengths…
