Cross-sectional assessment of nut consumption and obesity, metabolic syndrome and other cardiometabolic risk factors: the PREDIMED study
2013
INTRODUCTION: Prospective studies have consistently suggested that nut consumption is inversely related to fatal and non-fatal coronary heart disease. Limited data are available on the epidemiological associations between nut intake and cardiometabolic risk factors. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate associations between frequency of nut consumption and prevalence of cardiometabolic risk factors [obesity, metabolic syndrome (MetS), type-2 diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia] in a Mediterranean population at high cardiovascular risk. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cross-sectional study of 7,210 men and women (mean age, 67 y) recruited into the PREDIMED study. MetS was defined by the harmonized ATPIII and I…
A 14-item Mediterranean diet assessment tool and obesity indexes among high-risk subjects: the PREDIMED trial
2012
Objective Independently of total caloric intake, a better quality of the diet (for example, conformity to the Mediterranean diet) is associated with lower obesity risk. It is unclear whether a brief dietary assessment tool, instead of full-length comprehensive methods, can also capture this association. In addition to reduced costs, a brief tool has the interesting advantage of allowing immediate feedback to participants in interventional studies. Another relevant question is which individual items of such a brief tool are responsible for this association. We examined these associations using a 14-item tool of adherence to the Mediterranean diet as exposure and body mass index, waist circum…
Quality of life in elderly patients after inguinal hernioplasty
2009
Background and aim Inguinal hernia is the most frequent abdominal wall her- nias in elderly population. Surgical treatment must be aware of the cardiovascular and respiratory disease these patients are often affected by. Inguinal hernia is responsi- ble to impair the quality of life (QoL). Aim of this study was to evaluate the QoL through the Short-Form (SF)-36 questionnaire in a cohort of elderly patients undergoing inguinal hernioplasty. Materials and methods Fifteen male patients of age ≥75 years affected by sympto- matic unilateral uncomplicated inguinal hernia were included in this study. All patients undergoing inguinal hernioplasty in local anaesthesia according to the Liech- tenstei…
Timing of granitoid magmatism in the eastern mid-German crystalline rise
2001
Abstract The eastern parts of the mid-German crystalline rise (MGCR) are exposed in the Spessart, Ruhla and Kyffhauser crystalline complexes and known from boreholes in the region of Dessau. In this study we determined igneous formation ages of granitoid intrusives and orthogneisses from this part of the MGCR using the Pb/Pb single zircon dating technique. The intrusion ages of the granitoids range from ∼489 to ∼302 Ma (i.e. from lower Ordovician to upper Carboniferous). The grouping of these ages marks several distinct magmatic episodes during the Variscan orogeny, with a major peak at the end of the lower Carboniferous. We tentatively suggest the following geodynamic scenario for the orig…
Shear-zone patterns and eclogite-facies metamorphism in the Mozambique belt of northern Malawi, east-central Africa: implications for the assembly of…
2002
Abstract We report on the first occurrence of Pan-African eclogite from the Mozambique belt of northern Malawi, east-central Africa. We describe aspects of (1) the pattern of Pan-African transcurrent and subhorizontal shear zones and how these shear zones relate to eclogite-facies metamorphism and (2) the P – T – t evolution of the eclogite. Finally, we discuss the significance of eclogite-facies metamorphism and shear-zone deformation for the assembly of Gondwana. The first major deformation event involved sinistral and dextral transcurrent and top-ESE shearing and occurred at ∼580–550 Ma. Transcurrent and top-ESE shearing resulted from ESE–WNW horizontal crustal shortening and commenced u…
Geochronology of the mid-German crystalline rise west of the River Rhine
1996
The mid-German crystalline rise has its westernmost exposures at the western margin of the Rhine graben in the southern Pfalz and the northern Alsace. The outcrops are made up of granitoid rocks and minor volcano-sedimentary sequences. Radiometric ages obtained by U/Pb, Pb/Pb, Sm/Nd and Rb/Sr analyses of the igneous rocks from this area range from ∼433 to ∼325 Ma thus covering a time span from the Silurian to the end of the lower Carboniferous. Because the investigated rocks are — according to their chemical composition — largely related to subduction zone environments, the following three geodynamical scenarios are postulated, always taking subduction of oceanic crust beneath the mid-Germa…
To…
Sperm Telomere Length in Men with Normal and Abnormal semen Parameters. A Pilot Study
2019
Objective: Male infertility is a growing social problem. The measurement of telomere length may be a new marker that can help to assess reproductive age of males and assess the chances of in vitro fertilization. Aim: The aim of our study was to investigate whether there are any differences between telomere length in men with normal and abnormal semen parameters. Materials and Methods: Telomere length was analyzed in 17 patients with normal and 28 patients with abnormal semen parameters using the telomeric repeat amplification protocol and Quantitative Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (qPCR). Results: Mean sperm telomere length in all donors was 49±24kbp per haploid genome. However, patie…
Chirurgische, endoskopische oder radiologisch interventionelle Therapie beim Gallengangscarcinom
1990
