Biological basis of bone strength : Anatomy, physiology and measurement

2020

Understanding how bones are innately designed, robustly developed and delicately maintained through intricate anatomical features and physiological processes across the lifespan is vital to inform our assessment of normal bone health, and essential to aid our interpretation of adverse clinical outcomes affecting bone through primary or secondary causes. Accordingly this review serves to introduce new researchers and clinicians engaging with bone and mineral metabolism, and provide a contemporary update for established researchers or clinicians. Specifically, we describe the mechanical and non-mechanical functions of the skeleton; its multidimensional and hierarchical anatomy (macroscopic, m…

What happens after five years?: The long-term effects of a four-session Acceptance and Commitment Therapy delivered by student therapists for depress…

2017

Brief interventions can be viable treatment options worth consideration in addressing the growing need for treatments of subclinical and clinical depressive symptoms. However, there is uncertainty regarding the long-term benefits of these interventions. The aim was to examine the long-term (5-year) effects of a 4-session Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) intervention for low mood delivered by novice therapists in order to see whether lasting effects could be achieved cost-effectively with four intervention sessions. Originally, 57 self-referred clients were randomized into two groups: an intervention group and a waiting-list control group which received treatment later. The groups wer…

Does level of leisure time physical activity, in a sample of patients with depression, predict health care utilization over a subsequent 5-year perio…

2018

Objectives: The main aim of this study was to investigate the association between leisure time physical activity (LTPA) and health care utilization (HCU) and furthermore, socio-demographic and clinical factors according to LTPA level among depressed patients based on data drawn from the Finnish Depression and Metabolic Syndrome in Adults (FDMSA)-study (2009-2016). Methods: 447 depressed patients aged 35-65 from municipalities within the Central Finland Hospital District participated in this study. Depressive symptoms (DS) were determined with the Beck Depression Inventory (a 10 points) and the psychiatric diagnosis confirmed with a diagnostic interview (M.I.N.I.). Severity of depression was…

The Effects of Dance Movement Therapy in the Treatment of Depression: A Multicenter, Randomized Controlled Trial in Finland

2020

This multicenter research investigates the effects of dance movement therapy (DMT) on participants diagnosed with depression. In total, 109 persons participated in the study in various locations in Finland. The participants were 39 years old, on average (range = 18–64 years), and most were female (96%). All participants received treatment as usual (TAU). They were randomized into DMT + TAU (n = 52) or TAU only (n = 57). The participants in the DMT + TAU group were offered 20 DMT sessions twice a week for 10 weeks in addition to standard care. The measurement points included pretreatment measurement at the baseline, posttreatment measurement at the end of the intervention, and a follow-up me…

Masennusoireiden ja terveyspalvelujen käytön välinen yhteys : FIN-D2D-väestötutkimus

2017

Masennus on kansainvälisesti yksi merkittävimmistä toimintakykyä heikentävistä sairauksista. Masennusoireet lisäävät merkittävästi riskiä sairastua masennukseen. Ainoastaan vähemmistön masennuksesta kärsivistä on todettu hakevan apua sairauteen ja hoitoa haetaan sitä todennäköisemmin, mitä vaikeampi ja pitkäkestoisempi masennustila on, ja mitä suurempi siihen liittyvä koettu toimintakyvyn heikkeneminen on. Tämän poikkileikkaustutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli selvittää masennusoireiden yhteyttä terveyspalvelujen käyttöön. Lisäksi haluttiin selvittää, mitä terveyspalveluita käyttö kuormittaa ja mitkä taustatekijät ovat yhteydessä terveyspalvelujen käyttöön. Kolmen eri sairaanhoitopiirin alueilta…

Fyysisen aktiivisuuden, masennusoireiden ja tyypin 2 diabeteksen välinen yhteys

2016

Tutkittaville suoritetti…

Relationship between physical activity and predicted home presenteeism among participants with depressive symptoms with and without clinical depressi…

2021

Background and objectives Depression can pose a major threat to an individual’s ability to cope with daily activities. The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between physical activity (PA) and predicted home presenteeism (PHP) among depressive participants. The relationship between PHP and the severity of depressive symptoms was also investigated. Methods A total of 760 participants with depressive symptoms (DS) aged ≥35 years participated in this study. The study was conducted between 2008 and 2016 in municipalities within the Central Finland Hospital District. DS were determined with the 21-item Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-21) with a cutoff score ≥10, and psychiatric dia…

Personality Type D, Level of Perceived Stress, Insomnia, and Depression Among High School Teachers in Poland

2021

Teaching is inherently connected with specific burdens that may imply stressful situations. Psychological predispositions of the surveyed group, including personality type D (distressed personality) and level of experienced stress can cause depressive episodes and sleep disorders, which have a direct impact not only on health in terms of disease, but also on well-being and the ability to effectively and properly teach. The research group consisted of 412 high school teachers from the Silesian Province, located in the south of Poland. Using the following research tools: Type D Scale (DS14), Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10), Athens Insomnia Scale (AIS) and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), it w…

Clinical profile associated with HIV risk in Spanish youth

2018

Heterosexual transmission is the second route of new HIV infection diagnoses in Spain. A high percentage of young people use condom inconsistently. Beyond cognitive factors, emotional variables seem to be associated with sexual risk behavior. The aim was to examine the differential clinical profile between young people at risk and no-risk for HIV infection. A total of 424 heterosexuals were evaluated (M age =20.62; SD=2.16), and distributed into two groups: risk group (60.7%) and non-risk group (39.3%). They completed the AIDS Prevention Questionnaire, the Beck Depression Inventory, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, the Penn State Worry Questionnaire, and the Brief Fear of Negative Evaluatio…

The high five: Associations of the five positive factors with the big five and well-being

2017

The study of individual differences in positive characteristics has mainly focused on moral traits. The objectives of this research were to study individual differences in positive characteristics from the point of view of the layperson, including non-moral individual characteristics, and to generate a replicable model of positive factors. Three studies based on a lexical approach were conducted. The first study generated a corpus of words which resulted in a refined list of socially shared positive characteristics. The second study produced a five-factor model of positive characteristics: erudition, peace, cheerfulness, honesty, and tenacity. The third study confirmed the model with a diff…
