On the Fidelity of IEEE 802.11 commercial cards
2006
The IEEE 802.11 D CF protocol is known to be fair in terms of long-term resource repartition among the contending stations. However, when considering real scenarios, where commercial 802.11 cards interact, very unpredictable as well as sometimes surprising behaviors emerge. Motivation of this paper is to investigate the reasons of the very evident disagreement between the theoretical IEEE 802.11 DCF protocol models and its practical implementations. Inparticular, we try to characterize the card behavior not only in terms of perceived throughput, but also in terms of low-level channel access operations. In fact, the simple throughput analysis does not allow to identify what affecting paramet…
Bluetooth-3G wireless transmission system for neural signal telemetry
2007
In this contribution a wireless transmission system for neural signals is developed. This system includes data compression algorithms at the information source, namely neural signals recorded by micro-electrode arrays. The signals are transmitted over Bluetooth to a mobile device that, without any processing or storing, retransmits it over 3G to a remote server where signal post-processing and analysis is performed. The overall transmission rate of the system is limited by the Bluetooth link between the information source and the mobile phone, as well as by the limited processing capabilities of the mobile device and also by the 3G-link. Data compression allows the transmission of up to 7 n…
Effect of macro and micro nutrients addition during anaerobic mono-digestion of grass silage in leach-bed reactors
2019
The effect of macro- (NH4Cl) (set I) and micro-nutrients (Fe, Ni, Co and Mo) (set II) addition on chemical oxygen demand (COD) solubilisation during anaerobic mono-digestion of grass silage was investigated in two sets of leach bed reactor experiments at 35°C. Results showed that addition of NH4Cl and micro-nutrients improved COD solubilisation by 18% (0.56 g SCOD g−1 volatile solids) and 7% (0.45 g SCOD g−1 VS), respectively than control. About 20–50% of the added micro-nutrients were bioavailable in the produced leachates, while the rest (50–80%) were adsorbed onto the grass silage. Results of biological methane potential assays showed that, specific methane yields of grass silage were im…
Anam-Net: Anamorphic Depth Embedding-Based Lightweight CNN for Segmentation of Anomalies in COVID-19 Chest CT Images.
2021
Chest computed tomography (CT) imaging has become indispensable for staging and managing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), and current evaluation of anomalies/abnormalities associated with COVID-19 has been performed majorly by the visual score. The development of automated methods for quantifying COVID-19 abnormalities in these CT images is invaluable to clinicians. The hallmark of COVID-19 in chest CT images is the presence of ground-glass opacities in the lung region, which are tedious to segment manually. We propose anamorphic depth embedding-based lightweight CNN, called Anam-Net, to segment anomalies in COVID-19 chest CT images. The proposed Anam-Net has 7.8 times fewer parameters …
Analysis of a complex high-strain zone at Cap de Creus, Spain
1997
Abstract The structural analysis of a high-strain zone developed in medium- to high-grade metamorphic micaschists from the Cap de Creus area, Spain provides an example of the complex relationships between geometry, strain and kinematics to be found in deep crustal shear zones. This high-strain zone is composed of E-W trending structural domains characterized by different strain intensities and associated with syntectonic emplacement of pegmatite dykes. The main phase of deformation discussed here, D2, affects steeply dipping bedding, boudinaged quartz veins and S1 developed parallel to bedding. D2 deformation of these features and of syn-D2 pegmatite dykes gives rise to fold/boudin structur…
Design and Validation of a FPGA-Based HIL Simulator for Minimum Losses Control of a PMSM
2021
This work examines the FPGA programmable logic platforms applied to minimum losses control of a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM), which represents a flexible solution for the implementation of an advanced digital control algorithm, given their intrinsic parallel structure and the capability to be directly reprogrammable in the field. In particular, design and validation of a FPGA-based Hardware-In-the-Loop (HIL) simulator is proposed, by investigating about data format, quantization and discretization effects and other issues arising during the experimental validation of a controller prototype, in order to reduce the embedded software development cycle and test control systems. The…
Correction factors for ionization chamber measurements with the ‘Valencia’ and ‘large field Valencia’ brachytherapy applicators
2018
Treatment of small skin lesions using HDR brachytherapy applicators is a widely used technique. The shielded applicators currently available in clinical practice are based on a tungsten-alloy cup that collimates the source-emitted radiation into a small region, hence protecting nearby tissues. The goal of this manuscript is to evaluate the correction factors required for dose measurements with a plane-parallel ionization chamber typically used in clinical brachytherapy for the 'Valencia' and 'large field Valencia' shielded applicators. Monte Carlo simulations have been performed using the PENELOPE-2014 system to determine the absorbed dose deposited in a water phantom and in the chamber act…
Système de vision à haute gamme dynamique auto adaptable
2020
High dynamic range (HDR) image generation using temporal exposure bracketing is widely used to recover the whole dynamic range of a filmed scene by fusion of two or more low dynamic range (LDR) images. Temporal exposure bracketing technique should be employed for static scenes and it cannot be applied directly for dynamic scenes. Motions introduced by moving objects in the LDR stack images create ghosts artifacts in the reconstructed HDR image. In this thesis, we have studied and evaluated a large nuber of algorithms used to correct or avoid these artifacts and we mad a trade-off between robustness and complexity in order to propose a real-time HDR video generation system. The real-time HDR …
Impact of dust and smoke mixing on column-integrated aerosol properties from observations during a severe wildfire episode over Valencia (Spain)
2017
The most destructive wildfire experienced in Spain since 2004 occurred close to Valencia in summer 2012. A total of 48.500ha were affected by two wildfires, which were mostly active during 29-30 June. The fresh smoke plume was detected at the Burjassot measurement station simultaneously to a severe dust episode. We propose an empirical method to evaluate the dust and smoke mixing and its impact on the microphysical and optical properties. For this, we combine direct-sun measurements with a Cimel CE-318 sun-photometer with an inversion methodology, and the Mie theory to derive the column-integrated size distribution, single scattering albedo (SSA) and asymmetry parameter (g). The mixing of d…
Selective oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane over SnO2-promoted NiO catalysts
2012
[EN] Ni-Sn-O mixed oxides catalysts have been investigated for the oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane. The catalysts were prepared through the evaporation of aqueous solutions of nickel nitrate and tin oxalate and finally calcined in air at 500 degrees C for 2 h. These materials have been characterized by several techniques (N-2-adsorption, X-ray diffraction, High-Resolution Electron Microscopy, temperature programmed reduction, X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy, Fourier Transformed Infrared Spectroscopy of adsorbed CO and O-18/O-16 isotope exchange). The addition of just a tiny amount of tin highly increases the selectivity to ethylene (from ca. 40% to 80-90%). Thus, high selectivity to et…
