Run-Time Reconfiguration for Emulating Transient Faults in VLSI Systems

2006

Advances in circuitry integration increase the probability of occurrence of transient faults in VLSI systems. A confident use of these systems requires the study of their behaviour in the presence of such faults. This study can be conducted using model-based fault injection techniques. In that context, field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) offer a great promise by enabling those techniques to execute models faster. This paper focuses on how run-time reconfiguration techniques can be used for emulating the occurrence of transient faults in VLSI models. Although the use of FPGAs for that purpose has been restricted so far to the well-known bit-flip fault model, recent studies in fault repres…

Fault Emulation for Dependability Evaluation of VLSI Systems

2008

Advances in semiconductor technologies are greatly increasing the likelihood of fault occurrence in deep-submicrometer manufactured VLSI systems. The dependability assessment of VLSI critical systems is a hot topic that requires further research. Field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) have been recently pro posed as a means for speeding-up the fault injection process in VLSI systems models (fault emulation) and for reducing the cost of fixing any error due to their applicability in the first steps of the development cycle. However, only a reduced set of fault models, mainly stuck-at and bit-flip, have been considered in fault emulation approaches. This paper describes the procedures to inje…

AER Filtering Using GLIDER: VHDL Cellular Automata Description

2008

Cellular Automata (CA) is a bio-inspired processing model for problem solving, initially proposed by Von Neumann. This approach modularizes the processing by dividing the solution into synchronous cells that change their states at the same time in order to get the solution. The communication between them is crucial to achieve the correct solution. On the other hand, the Address-Event-Representation (AER) is a neuromorphic communication protocol for transferring asynchronous events between VLSI chips. These neuro-inspired implementations have been used to design sensor chips (retina, cochleas), processing chips (convolutions, filters) and learning chips, which makes it possible to develop co…

A Parallel Face Detection System Implemented on FPGA

2007

In this paper, we introduce a methodology for designing a system for face detection and its implementation on FPGA. The chosen face detection method is the well-known convolutional face finder (CFF) algorithm, which consists in a pipeline of convolutions and subsampling operations. Our goal is to define a parallel architecture able to process efficiently this algorithm. We present a dataflow based architecture algorithm adequation (AAA) methodology implemented using the SynDEx software, in order to find the best compromise between the processing power and functionality requirement of each processor element (PE), and the efficiency of algorithm parallelization. We describe a first implementa…

MAClets: Active MAC Protocols over hard-coded devices

2012

We introduce MAClets, software programs uploaded and executed on-demand over wireless cards, and devised to change the card's real-time medium access control operation. MAClets permit seamless reconfiguration of the MAC stack, so as to adapt it to mutated context and spectrum conditions and perform tailored performance optimizations hardly accountable by an once-for-all protocol stack design. Following traditional active networking principles, MAClets can be directly conveyed within data packets and executed on hard-coded devices acting as virtual MAC machines. Indeed, rather than executing a pre-defined protocol, we envision a new architecture for wireless cards based on a protocol interpr…

Metric Learning in Histopathological Image Classification: Opening the Black Box

2023

The application of machine learning techniques to histopathology images enables advances in the field, providing valuable tools that can speed up and facilitate the diagnosis process. The classification of these images is a relevant aid for physicians who have to process a large number of images in long and repetitive tasks. This work proposes the adoption of metric learning that, beyond the task of classifying images, can provide additional information able to support the decision of the classification system. In particular, triplet networks have been employed to create a representation in the embedding space that gathers together images of the same class while tending to separate images w…

Innovative Compact Solar Air Conditioner based on Fixed and Cooled Adsorption Beds and Wet Heat Exchangers

2014

Abstract In this work, a new all-in-one compact solar air conditioner concept is presented. The system is mainly based on a new DEC process which utilises fixed and cooled adsorption beds operating in a batch process and two wet heat exchangers. The proposed innovative adsorption bed is a fin and tube heat exchanger commonly used in the air conditioning sector, wherein the spaces between the fins are filled with silica gel grains. The main feature of this component is to allow simultaneous dehumidification and cooling of air. Furthermore, since the component hosts a considerable amount of adsorption material, solar energy can be efficiently stored in the desiccant media in terms of accumula…

Simulation of a regeneration plant for spent pickling solutions via spray roasting

2015

Nowadays, pyrohydrolysis techniques are widely applied for regeneration of spent pickling liquors providing an excellent environmental and economical strategy to the problem of waste disposal/recovery, also thanks to the high acid recovery efficiencies (>99%) achieved. In fact, in these processes, iron chlorides are converted into iron oxides and hydrogen chloride at high temperature in spray roasting or fluidized bed reactors. Though the state-of-the-art technologies have been successfully applied only to large-scale plants, the development of small-scale units, able to perform a delocalized regeneration of spent solutions where these latter are actually produced, would be strongly needed …

NO formation tendency characterization for solid fuels in fluidized beds

2013

Abstract Usually the standard fuel analysis is not enough to allow for accurate NO emission predictions in large scale fluidized bed combustion. This paper presents NO formation tendency characterization results from novel laboratory measurements in a small-scale fluidized bed combustor. With the special two-stage oxidation method it is possible to eliminate the observed problems of unstable test conditions during rapid pyrolysis of high-volatile fuels in batch combustion. Experimental results of the conversion of fuel nitrogen to NO are presented for wide range of fuels, ranging from coal-type fuels to peat, biomasses and wastes. A NO formation tendency database is formed based on the resu…
