A photoswitchable helical peptide with light-controllable interface/transmembrane topology in lipidic membranes
2021
Summary The spontaneous insertion of helical transmembrane (TM) polypeptides into lipid bilayers is driven by three sequential equilibria: solution-to-membrane interface (MI) partition, unstructured-to-helical folding, and MI-to-TM helix insertion. A bottleneck for understanding these three steps is the lack of experimental approaches to perturb membrane-bound hydrophobic polypeptides out of equilibrium rapidly and reversibly. Here, we report on a 24-residues-long hydrophobic α-helical polypeptide, covalently coupled to an azobenzene photoswitch (KCALP-azo), which displays a light-controllable TM/MI equilibrium in hydrated lipid bilayers. FTIR spectroscopy reveals that trans KCALP-azo folds…
Effect of temperature and organic nutrients on the biodegradation of linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (LAS) during the composting of anaerobically diges…
2004
Limits on the application of biosolids (anaerobically processed sludges from wastewater treatment plants) as fertilizers for the amendment of soil are becoming greater because of the accumulation of recalcitrant substances, making necessary the use of techniques that bring the concentration of xenobiotics to lower concentrations than those permitted. In general, the biosolids composting process is sufficient to reduce the usual concentration of linear alkylbenzene sulfonates (LAS) to low levels. In this work, an assessment is made on the effect of temperature in the capacity of enriched bacterial populations to biodegrade LAS, together with the influence that the available nutrients may hav…
Triphenyl[(4-phenylbenzoyl)methyl]phosphonium trifluoromethanesulfonate
2010
In the cation of the title compound, C32H26OP+·CF3O3S−, the dihedral angle between the benzene rings of the biphenyl group is 42.37 (8)°. In the crystal, the cations and anions interact through intermolecular C—H...O hydrogen bonds, forming chains parallel to the b axis. These chains are further linked by C—H...π stacking interactions into layers parallel to the bc plane.
A theoretical study of the electronic spectrum of biphenyl
1995
Abstract The electronic spectrum of biphenyl in the energy range up to 6.0 eV has been studied using multiconfigurational second-order perturbation theory (CASPT2) and a basis set of ANO type, including polarization functions on all carbon atoms. The calculated spectrum gives conclusive assignments to all valence excited singlet states and the low-lying triplet states. The change of the torsional angle between the two benzene rings in the different excited states is shown to be of considerable importance and explains the different excitation energies observed in the gas phase as compared to solution or crystalline biphenyl at low temperatures. The intense transition to the 1 1B1u state is m…
2,5-Dimethyl-4′-nitrobiphenyl
2006
The title compound, C14H13NO2, is a non-planar biphenyl derivative, in which the dihedral angle between the benzene rings is 62.65 (5) °.
Azobenzene Containing Low-Molecular Weight Organic Glasses for Optical Recording
2013
Abstract In this work photoinduced processes and holographic surface relief formation in azobenzene containing low- molecular weight organic glasses were studied. The molecular glasses due to trans-cis isomerisation and photo- orientation of molecules possess high sensitivity to the light irradiation and therefore they are promising media for holographic recording. Electric field of linearly polarized light causes an alignment of molecule dipoles perpendicularly to the electric field vector and this process is accompanied by an appearance of photoinduced optical anisotropy in organic glasses. The photoinduced birefringence and dichroism induced by 532 nm light was studied. Holographic recor…
The efficacy and safety of ezetimibe/simvastatin combination compared with intensified lipid-lowering treatment strategies in diabetic subjects with …
2012
Aims The objective was to assess the consistency of effect of switching to ezetimibe/simvastatin 10/20 mg versus doubling the baseline statin dose (to simvastatin 40 mg or atorvastatin 20 mg) or switching to rosuvastatin 10 mg across subgroups of subjects with (n = 617) and without (n = 191) metabolic syndrome (MetS). Methods This was a post hoc analysis of a randomized, double-blind, 6-week study of adults 18–79 years with cardiovascular disease and diabetes mellitus with low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) ≥70 and ≤160 mg/dl. The percent change in LDL-C and other lipids was estimated within each subgroup separately. Safety and tolerability were assessed. Results In subjects with M…
Platelet, Not Endothelial, P-Selectin Expression Contributes to Generation of Immunity in Cutaneous Contact Hypersensitivity
2010
Leukocyte extravasation is a prerequisite for host defense and autoimmunity alike. Detailed understanding of the tightly controlled and overlapping sequences of leukocyte extravasation might aid development of novel therapeutic strategies. Leukocyte extravasation is initiated by interaction of selectins with appropriate carbohydrate ligands. Lack of P-selectin expression leads to decreased contact hypersensitivity responses. Yet, it remains unclear if this is due to inhibition of leukocyte extravasation to the skin or due to interference with initial immune activation in lymph nodes. In line with previous data, we here report a decreased contact hypersensitivity response, induced by 2,4,-di…
Blood flow patterns spatially associated with platelet aggregates in murine colitis.
2009
In the normal murine mucosal plexus, blood flow is generally smooth and continuous. In inflammatory conditions, such as chemically-induced murine colitis, the mucosal plexus demonstrates markedly abnormal flow patterns. The inflamed mucosal plexus is associated with widely variable blood flow velocity as well as discontinuous and even bidirectional flow. To investigate the mechanisms responsible for these blood flow patterns, we used intravital microscopic examination of blood flow within the murine mucosal plexus during dextran sodium sulphate-and trinitrobenzenesulfonic acid-induced colitis. The blood flow patterns within the mucosal plexus demonstrated flow exclusion in 18% of the vessel…
Influence of Structural Isomerism on the Electronic Properties of Extended Phthalocyanines
1993
Abstract The electronic structure of isomeric naphthalocyanines (H2Nc) is investigated using the nonempirical valence effective Hamiltonian (VEH) technique. The way the outer benzene rings are annelated (linearly as in 2,3-H2Nc or angularly as in 1,2-H2Nc) is shown to determine very important changes in the electronic properties. While similar properties to those of phthalocyanine are calculated for 1,2-H2Nc, lower oxidation potentials and red-shifted optical absorptions are predicted for 2,3-H2Nc in agreement with experimental data. The isomerism resulting from the different relative positions of the angularly annelated benzene rings in 1,2-H2Nc is shown to have almost no effect on the ele…
