Lipid-Mediated Relation between Tissue Factor Pathway Inhibitor Activity and Cardiovascular Risk Factors and Diseases in a Large Population Sample
2018
Abstract Background: Tissue factor pathway inhibitor (TFPI), a Kunitz-type serine protease, is a potent anticoagulant protein in the extrinsic coagulation pathway and acts by inhibiting both the FXa and the Tissue Factor-FVIIa complex. In contrast to total and free TFPI antigen levels, the reference values and clinical determinants of total TFPI activity have not yet been studied in detail in the general population. In the present study, we aim to identify the cardiovascular determinants for total TFPI activity and investigate its association with cardiovascular disease (CVD) and total mortality, in a population at large. Methods: For this study, the first 4779 subjects of the population-ba…
Asthma and metabolic syndrome: Current knowledge and future perspectives
2014
Asthma and obesity are epidemiologically linked; however, similar relationships are also observed with other markers of the metabolic syndrome, such as insulin resistance and dyslipidemia, which cannot be accounted for by increased body mass alone. Obesity appears to be a predisposing factor for the asthma onset, both in adults and in children. In addition, obesity could make asthma more difficult to control and to treat. Although obesity may predispose to increased Th2 inflammation or tendency to atopy, other mechanisms need to be considered, such as those mediated by hyperglycaemia, hyperinsulinemia and dyslipidemia in the context of metabolic syndrome. The mechanisms underlying the associ…
Measuring the Reputation of Top US Business Schools: A MIMIC Modeling Approach
2009
This article examines predictors of the reputation of top US business schools as perceived by three different stakeholders: business school deans, MBA candidates, and recruiters of MBA graduates. Reputation is modeled and later estimated via a Multiple Indicators and Multiple Causes model using LISREL methodology. The outcomes of the study show that the reputation of a business school is a unidimensional construct, implying homogeneity in the perceptions of the stakeholders analyzed, and fundamentally hinges on two antecedents: quality of students and position in the business school media rankings.
Sustainability performance and assurance: Influence on reputation
2015
- The positive impact of sustainability on reputation has been assumed but not sufficiently examined. This study probes the veracity of these claims by applying legitimacy and signaling perspectives to examine whether sustainability performance and assurance contribute to corporate reputation. We find superior sustainability performance has a positive association with sustainability reputation. Companies with better performance are also more likely to obtain external assurance of their sustainability disclosure, but assurance does not directly affect reputation. Assurance appears to be a managerial tool associated with the congruence of internal processes rather than a differentiating signa…
Neutral Reputation and Public Sector Organizations
2007
Despite the strides taken in reputation research during recent decades, the reputation of public sector organizations has remained rather neglected. Public sector organizations often measure intangibles with instruments designed for corporations, although their raison d’etre differs fundamentally from that of the latter. This paper attempts to fill the gap in reputation research on public sector organizations by developing the proposition that for public sector organizations a neutral rather than excellent reputation is ideal, as neutrality enables a critical operating distance, and the resources for maintaining an excellent reputation are scarce. To test the idea of neutral reputation in p…

Body mass index categories and anxiety symptoms among adults aged =?50 years from low and middle income countries.
2021
Background: Body weight may be a risk factor for anxiety; however, there is a scarcity of studies on this association in older adults especially from low and middle income countries (LMICs). Therefore, we investigated the association between body mass index (BMI) and anxiety symptoms among adults aged ≥ 50 years from 6 LMICs. Methods: Cross-sectional, community-based, nationally representative data from the World Health Organization (WHO) Study on global AGEing and adult health (SAGE) were analyzed. The BMI was based on measured weight and height and was categorized as: < 18.5 kg/m2 (underweight), 18.5–24.9 kg/m2 (normal weight), 25.0–29.9 kg/m2 (overweight), 30.0–34.9 kg/m2 (obesity cla…
Adipose stromal cells promote the transition of colorectal cancer cells toward a mesenchymal-like phenotype
2021
ABSTRACT Colon cancer progression is among the risks that increase with obesity. We have recently unveiled the molecular mechanism by which adipose tissue-released molecules, HGF and IL-6, make colorectal cancer (CRC) cells acquiring mesenchymal traits. Targeting of adipose-derived factors abrogate the metastatic potential of CRC stem cells (CR-CSCs) in obese patients.

Water-Tolerant Trifloaluminate Ionic Liquids: New and Unique Lewis Acidic Catalysts for the Synthesis of Chromane
2018
The first example of triflometallate ionic liquids, named in analogy to chlorometallate ionic liquids, is reported. Trifloaluminate ionic liquids, synthesised from 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium triflates and aluminium triflate, were characterised by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy and FT-IR spectroscopy, revealing the existence of oligonuclear, multiply-charged trifloaluminate anions, with multiple bridging triflate modes. Acceptor numbers were determined to quantify their Lewis acidity, rendering trifloaluminate ionic liquids as medium-strength Lewis acids (AN = ca. 65). Used as acidic catalysts in the cycloaddition of 2,4-dimethylphenol and isoprene (molar ratio 2:1) to prepare chromane, trif…
