Slow magnetic relaxation in a hydrogen-bonded 2D array of mononuclear dysprosium(III) oxamates.

The reaction of N-(2,6-dimethylphenyl)oxamic acid with dysprosium(III) ions in a controlled basic media afforded the first example of a mononuclear lanthanide oxamate complex exhibiting a field-induced slow magnetic relaxation behavior typical of single-ion magnets (SIMs). The hydrogen-bond-mediated self-assembly of this new bifunctional dysprosium(III) SIM in the solid state provides a unique example of 2D hydrogen-bonded polymer with a herringbone net topology.

Crystal structure of the bifunctional soybean Bowman-Birk inhibitor at 0.28-nm resolution. Structural peculiarities in a folded protein conformation.

The Bowman-Birk inhibitor from soybean is a small protein that contains a binary arrangement of trypsin-reactive and chymotrypsin-reactive subdomains. In this report, the crystal structure of this anticarcinogenic protein has been determined to 0.28-nm resolution by molecular replacement from crystals grown at neutral pH. The crystal structure differs from a previously determined NMR structure [Werner, M. H. & Wemmer, D. E. (1992) Biochemistry 31, 999-1010] in the relative orientation of the two enzyme-insertion loops, in some details of the main chain trace, in the presence of favourable contacts in the trypsin-insertion loop, and in the orientation of several amino acid side chains. Photoaffinity cross-linking of F1ATPase from the thermophilic bacterium PS3 by 3′-arylazido-β-alanyl-2-azido ATP

AbstractThe photoactivatable bifunctional 3′-arylazido-β-alanyl-2-azido ATP (2,3′-DiN3ATP) has been applied to study the localization of the nucleotide-binding sites of coupling factor 1 (F1ATPase, TF1) from the thermophilic bacterium PS3 by photoaffinity cross-linking. UV irradiation of TF1 in the presence of 2,3′-DiN3ATP results in the nucleotide-dependent formation of various higher molecular mass cross-links formed by two, three or even four α- and/or β-subunits. The differences observed upon photoaffinity cross-linking by the bifunctional 2-azido ATP or 8-azido ATP analog are discussed. Self-assembly of small gold colloids with functionalized gold nanorods.

We present a general strategy to stabilize gold nanorod suspensions with mono- and bifunctional polyethylene glycol (PEG) and to attach a controlled number of nanoparticles or biomolecules. Characterization by gel electrophoresis, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and optical dark-field microscopy show the specific binding of functionalized nanorods to their target while avoiding nonspecific binding to substrates, matrices, and other particles. Such nanorods are well suited for self-assembly of nanostructures and single-molecule labeling.

Systematic investigation of functional core variation within hyperbranched polyglycerols

A novel series of hyperbranched polyether polyols with various n-alkyl amine cores (mono- and bifunctional) and photoactive cores (benzylamine and 1-naphthylmethylamine) have been prepared. Polymerization of glycidol was carried out in two ways, starting directly from primary amine initiators and from bisglycidolized amine initiators. NMR spectroscopy and size exclusion chromatography (SEC) showed good control over the molecular weights only, when bisglycidolized amines were used. Oxidative oligomerization of cyclodextrin-complexed bifunctional phenols catalyzed by horseradish peroxidase in water

The HRP-catalyzed oligomerization of hydrophobic bifunctional phenols in water was realized by the use of 2,6-di-O-methylated β-cyclodextrin. The molecular weights of the resulting oligomers were in the same region as they were reached by conventional HRP-catalyzed oligomerizations in water/dioxane-mixtures. The polymerizable moieties, maleimide and methacrylamide, were not affected during the oligomerization process, as proofed by NMR, MALDI-TOF and FT-IR measurements. It was therefore possible to get soluble functionalized oligomers, which were crosslinked via radical copolymerization with suitable components (styrene, MMA) or heating.

Radiolabeling of DOTATOC with the long-lived positron emitter 44Sc.

Abstract The positron-emitting radionuclide 44 Sc with a half-life of 3.97 h and a β + branching of 94.3% is of potential interest for clinical PET. As so far it is available from a 44 Ti/ 44 Sc generator in Mainz, where long-lived 44 Ti decays to no-carrier-added (nca) 44 Sc. The 44 Sc is a trivalent metal cation and should be suitable for complexation with many well established bifunctional chelators conjugated to peptides or other molecular targeting vectors. Thus, the aim of this work was to investigate the potential of 44 Sc for labeling of DOTA-conjugated peptides. The apparent loss of tissue culture competence during leaf differentiation in yams (Dioscorea bulbifera L.)

Explants taken from the leaves of yams (Dioscorea bulbifera L.) at different stages of development were cultured in vitro on a checkerboard using various combinations and/or concentrations of auxin (2,4-d) and cytokinin (6-BAP). An addition of cytokinin to the culture media was not essential for callus induction from explants derived from young leaves in the very early stages of expansion. When the leaves expanded further they required cytokinin and the requirement increased considerably during expansion. Studies towards the development of lipophilic bifunctional N3S3 chelators for 68Ga

Abstract The present study is concerned with a concept of charge-neutral, lipophilic, macrocyclic bifunctional chelators, suitable for the introduction of a gallium-68 label into small molecules. The synthesis of a novel bifunctional N3S3-type chelator, derived from 1,4,7-triazacyclononane, initial 68Ga-radiolabelling and the determination of stability and calculated lipophilicity of the compound are described. The 68Ga-labelled chelate was obtained in a maximum radiochemical yield of 93±5% after a reaction time of 2 min. It remained intact over 3 h in a DTPA-challenge and a transferrin challenge experiment, indicating sufficient stability for PET studies.

Proline in the presence of sodium hydrogen carbonate has been found to be an effective catalyst for the Baylis–Hillman reaction between methyl or ethyl vinyl ketone and aryl aldehydes. Screening of several amine catalysts showed that an ionizable carboxylic function directly linked to the secondary amine catalyst plays an important role in the synthesis of the desired product in good yield. The data obtained has allowed us to suggest, for the first time, that proline, sarcosine, pipecolinic acid and homoproline may act as bifunctional catalysts via a bicyclic enaminolactone species as intermediate.
