Altered elemental profile as indicator of homeostatic imbalance in pathogenesis of oral submucous fibrosis

Oral submucous fibrosis (OSF) is a potential precancerous condition of the oral cavity and oropharynx. The etiopathogenesis of this complex precancerous condition is still obscure. In addition to deleterious oral habits, malnutrition, and possible genetic predisposition, altered bioelemental status is also likely to play an important role in its pathogenesis. The present study analyzed 68 elements by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectroscopy in oral mucosa of normal and OSF individuals and some interesting alterations in elemental profile in the diseased tissue have been noted, indicating a homeostatic imbalance. Nitric oxide synthase in the enteric nervous system of the guinea-pig: a quantitative description

The distribution and abundance of nitric oxide synthase (NOS)-containing neurons and their terminals in the gastrointestinal tract of the guinea-pig were examined in detail using NADPH diaphorase histochemistry and NOS immunohistochemistry. NOS-containing cell bodies were found in the myenteric plexus throughout the gastrointestinal tract and in the submucous plexus of the stomach, colon and rectum. NOS-containing neurons comprised between 12% (in the duodenum) and 54% (in the esophagus) of total myenteric neurons. In the ileum, NOS neurons represented 19% of total myenteric neurons. Objective: Oral cytology is becoming increasingly important in the early diagnosis of oral cancer, including epithelial atypia. The aim of this study is to assess the whether the cytoplasmic diameter, nuclear diameter and their nuclear to cytoplasmic ratio are reliable parameters in exfoliative cytology in detecting premalignant and malignant lesions. Epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma of the salivary gland--a low grade malignant neoplasm? Report of two cases and review of the literature.

Summary Epithelial-myoepithelial carcinomas (EMC) are rare neoplasms of the salivary gland with an incidence of less than 1% arising predominantly in the parotid gland. Although they are thought to be of low grade malignancy, fatal courses are described. We report a case of EMC of the parotid gland in a 58-year-old woman with an unfavorable course of this disease in long term follow-up. The malignant potential of this tumor is discussed. In addition, we include another case of EMC of the submandibular gland.

Metastatic Renal Cell Carcinoma to Submandibular Gland: A Rare Occurrence

Approximately 20-30% of patients affected by renal cell carcinoma (RCC) present with metastatic disease, and 20% to 40% undergoing nephrectomy for clinically localized disease will develop metastases. A 53 years old female patient developed a left submandibular swelling. Four years before she experienced a left radical nephrectomy for a clear cell tumor and two years later right kidney was removed for a cancer having the same histologic subtype. Modeling of Offshore Crane and Marine Craft in Wave Motion

Safe handling of heavy payloads in an offshore environment requires careful planning and depends on the interaction between a crane and a vessel. This paper investigates the coupled dynamics between a multipurpose crane with payload, and an offshore carrying vessel. A classical multi-body model is derived using holonomic constraints and Newton-Euler kinetics. The resulting index-3 system of differential-algebraic equation (DAE) is transformed into an index-1 system and solved using commonly used numerical ode solvers.
