Inflammatory Characteristics of Monocytes from Pediatric Patients with Tuberous Sclerosis.
2015
Objective Therapeutic options for the tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) syndrome showed varying outcomes. Malfunctional tsc1 / tsc2 genes leave mTOR uninhibited, a positive downstream modulator of the innate proinflammatory immune system, which has not yet been described in pediatric patients with TSC. Methods Using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) gene expression levels of monocytes after cultivation with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) or with LPS + mTOR inhibitor rapamycin, patients with TSC ( n = 16) were compared with healthy subjects ( n = 20). Results Compared with monocytes from healthy controls, LPS showed a more prominent gene expression pattern in patients with TSC (CCL24, CXCL10, IL…
Immune-inflammatory and metabolic effects of high dose furosemide plus hypertonic saline solution (HSS) treatment in cirrhotic subjects with refracto…
2016
Introduction Patients with chronic liver diseases are usually thin as a result of hypermetabolism and malnutrition expressed by reduced levels of leptin and impairment of other adyponectins such as visfatin. Aims We evaluated the metabolic and inflammatory effects of intravenous high-dose furosemide plus hypertonic saline solutions (HSS) compared with repeated paracentesis and a standard oral diuretic schedule, in patients with cirrhosis and refractory ascites. Methods 59 consecutive cirrhotic patients with refractory ascites unresponsive to outpatient treatment. Enrolled subjects were randomized to treatment with intravenous infusion of furosemide (125-250mg⁄bid) plus small volumes of HSS …
Avicenna’s Outsourced Rationalism
2020
This paper refutes the claim that Avicenna's theory of science is empiricist in the robust, Lockean sense. I argue that his denial of innatism notwithstanding, the theory of formal identity, together with the metaphysical idea that the ontological structure of the sublunary world is grounded in the active intellect, commits Avicenna to a peculiar kind of rationalism in which the ultimate source of knowledge is an intellect, albeit one extraneous to the human mind. I then introduce two hitherto insufficiently discussed texts to challenge this conclusion. In the end, I claim that although this new material may provide some evidence for a robust empiricism in Avicenna, its consequences remaine…
MRI abnormalities following repeated and incoming seizures.
2010
Abstract Neuroimaging, an important diagnostic tool frequently used in the evaluation of patients with epilepsy, has mainly the aim to identify structural abnormalities needing a treatment and to contribute to the definition of the aetiology. Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in epilepsy is more sensitive than computerized tomography (CT) scan for detecting abnormalities. Status epilepticus (SE) and repeated incoming seizures may determine extensive and transient or long lasting pronounced MRI changes. We describe a case of a 41-year-old woman with a history of brain neoplasm, whose contrast-enhanced MRI images following repeated and incoming seizures were characterized either by rever…

mTORC1 activation in B cells confers impairment of marginal zone microarchitecture by exaggerating cathepsin activity
2018
Mammalian target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) is a key regulator of cell metabolism and lymphocyte proliferation. It is inhibited by the tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC), a heterodimer of TSC1 and TSC2. Deletion of either gene results in robust activation of mTORC1. Mature B cells reside in the spleen at two major anatomical locations, the marginal zone (MZ) and follicles. The MZ constitutes the first line of humoral response against blood‐borne pathogens and undergoes atrophy in chronic inflammation. In previous work, we showed that mice deleted for TSC1 in their B cells (TSC1(BKO)) have almost no MZ B cells, whereas follicular B cells are minimally affected. To explore potential underl…
Izmeklētāja lēmumi un to pārsūdzība kriminālprocesā
2017
Abstract LB-085: A new role for LKB1 to regulate Heat Shock Protein 90 activity
2018
Abstract Approximately 30% of human non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients harbor a somatic KRAS mutation resulting, in aberrant activation of downstream signaling pathways that control cell proliferation, cell growth, and cell survival. Importantly, alleles of LKB1, a serine/threonine kinase that functions as a tumor suppressor, are somatically inactivated in ~30% of NSCLCs within KRAS-mutant NSCLC. The loss of LKB1 gives rise to aggressive, highly metastatic, and highly drug resistant tumors. We have previously demonstrated that the inactivation of the tumor suppressor lkb1 rendered mutant kras murine NSCLC resistant to targeted agents including BET bromodomain and kinase inhibitors.…
Insights About the Neuroplasticity State on the Effect of Intramuscular Electrical Stimulation in Pain and Disability Associated With Chronic Myofasc…
2018
Background: There is limited evidence concerning the effect of intramuscular electrical stimulation (EIMS) on the neural mechanisms of pain and disability associated with chronic Myofascial Pain Syndrome (MPS). Objectives: To provide new insights into the EIMS long-term effect on pain and disability related to chronic MPS (primary outcomes). To assess if the neuroplasticity state at baseline could predict the long-term impact of EIMS on disability due to MPS we examined the relationship between the serum brain-derived-neurotrophic-factor (BDNF) and by motor evoked potential (MEP). Also, we evaluated if the EIMS could improve the descending pain modulatory system (DPMS) and the cortical exci…
Magnetoresistance studies of the ferromagnetic molecular metal (BEDT-TTF)3[MnCr(C2O4)3] under pressure
2003
(BEDT-TTF)3[MnCr(C2O4)3] is the first ferromagnetic molecular metal, in which organic layers of BEDT-TTF alternate with infinite layers of the bimetallic oxalate complex [MnCr(C2O4)3]-. While the bimetallic layer undergoes a magnetic phase transition into a canted ferromagnetic state at 5.5 K, the metallic character of the conductivity is not affected by the magnetic transition [Nature 408 (2000) 447]. We performed magnetoresistance measurements (B≤17 T) at low temperatures (T≥900 mK) and under hydrostatic pressures of up to 2.0 GPa. Oscillations in the magnetoresistance develop under pressure that can be interpreted as Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations, if an internal magnetic field is taken …
