NMDA receptor antagonist felbamate reduces behavioral deficits and blood-brain barrier permeability changes after experimental subarachnoid hemorrhag…
2007
Increased levels of glutamate and aspartate have been detected after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) that correlate with neurological status. The NMDA receptor antagonist felbamate (FBM; 2-phenyl-1,3-propanediol dicarbamate) is an anti-epileptic drug that elicits neuroprotective effects in different experimental models of hypoxia-ischemia. The aim of this dose-response study was to evaluate the effect of FBM after experimental SAH in rats on (1) behavioral deficits (employing a battery of assessment tasks days 1-5 post-injury) and (2) blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability changes (quantifying microvascular alterations according to the extravasation of protein-bound Evans Blue by a spectropho…
Low-protein diet prevents tissue lipoprotein lipase activity increase in growing rats
2000
The time course of changes in tissue lipolytic activities was studied in young rats during theconsumption of a low-protein diet containing 50 g protein/kg (40 g wheat gluten +10 g casein/kg) for 28 d followed by balanced refeeding with 200 g protein/kg (160 g wheat gluten +40 gcasein/kg) for 28 d. Lipoprotein lipase (LPL) activities were compared with the values of acontrol group fed a balanced diet containing 200 g protein/kg for 56 d. At the end of proteinmalnutrition period, the epididymal fat tissue LPL activity represented 36 %, and that of heartand gastrocnemius was 44 %, of those of the control group. These differences wereaccompanied by lower serum- and VLDL-triacylglycerols (TAG), …
The rs1466113 Polymorphism in the Somatostatin Receptor 2 Gene Is Associated with Obesity and Food Intake in a Mediterranean Population
2009
<i>Background:</i> A genome-wide association study identified rs1466113 (G>C) in the somatostatin receptor 2 (SSTR2) gene as one of the polymorphisms most significantly associated with body mass index (BMI). As replication is required, we examined the association between this polymorphism and anthropometric variables and food intake in a Mediterranean population. <i>Methods:</i> We studied 945 high cardiovascular-risk subjects (340 men and 605 women) aged 67 ± 6 years, participating in the PREDIMED-Valencia Study. Demographic, clinical, biochemical, dietary, genetic and anthropometric data were obtained. <i>Results:</i> We found recessive effects for t…
Studies on the disposition, metabolism and hepatotoxicity of coumarin in the rat and Syrian hamster.
2002
The hepatotoxicity, metabolism and disposition of coumarin has been compared in male Sprague-Dawley rats and Syrian hamsters. The treatment of rats for 12, 24 and 42 weeks with diets containing 0.2 and 0.5% coumarin resulted in hepatotoxicity and increased relative liver weights. While levels of cytochrome P450 (CYP) and CYP-dependent enzymes were decreased, levels of reduced glutathione (GSH) and activities of UDP glucuronosyltransferase, gamma-glutamyltransferase and GSH S-transferase were increased. In contrast, coumarin produced few hepatic changes in the Syrian hamster. Following a single oral dose of 25 mg/kg [3-14C]coumarin, radioactivity was rapidly excreted by the rat and Syrian ha…
Bone rigidity to neuromuscular performance ratio in young and elderly men.
2009
Given the adaptation of bone to prevalent loading, bone loss should follow, but lag behind, the decline in physical performance during aging. Furthermore, bone responsiveness to load-induced strains is believed to decrease with aging. However, the relationship between bone and lean body ( approximately muscle) mass appears to remain rather constant throughout adulthood. The purpose of this study was to examine the association between age and bone to neuromuscular performance ratio. Young (N=20, age 24 SD+/-2 years, body mass 77+/-11 kg, height 178+/-6 cm) and elderly (N=25, 72+/-4 years, 75+/-9 kg, 172+/-5 cm) men served as subjects. Bone structural traits were measured at the right distal …
Inhibition by interleukin-1 beta of noradrenaline release in rat spleen: involvement of lymphocytes, NO and opioid receptors.
1995
Effects of indomethacin, N omega-nitro-L-arginine (NNA) and naloxone, and of pretreatment with cyclophosphamide (CY), on the interleukin (IL)-1 beta induced inhibition of exocytotic noradrenaline release were investigated in the isolated, vascularly perfused spleen of the rat. Neurotransmitter release was evoked by perivascular electrical stimulation (4 Hz) and the overflow of endogenous noradrenaline was determined by HPLC with electrochemical detection. Perfusion of the spleen with Tyrode's solution containing IL-1 beta (100 pg/ml) for 90 min caused an inhibition of the stimulation-evoked noradrenaline overflow which persisted for at least 20 min after washout of the IL. The evoked overfl…
Functional, Biochemical, and Morphological Hepatobiliary Effects in Rats Chronically Exposed to a Steroidal Antiandrogen
1996
Abstract Yellow–brown deposits in intrahepatic bile ducts and portal macrophages were observed for male, but not female, Sprague–Dawley rats fed zanoterone, a steroidal antiandrogen, for ≥3 months. The lesion did not affect biliary canaliculi and was associated with changes of biliary epithelium, portal chronic inflammation, and bile duct proliferation. Deposit formation was assumed to be related to a gender-related anomaly in bile composition and/or flow. Therefore, the pathogenesis of the lesion was investigated in male, female, and orchiectomized rats. Hepatobiliary structure and function were evaluated after 3 months of treatment and 3 months of reversibility. Drug biliary disposition w…
Wheeze and asthma in children: associations with body mass index, sports, television viewing, and diet.
2008
Obesity, physical activity, and dietary habits are distinct but strongly interrelated lifestyle factors that may be relevant to the prevalence of wheeze and asthma in children. Our goal was to analyze the relationship of body mass index (BMI), regular sports participation, TV viewing, and diet with current wheezing and asthma. We investigated 20,016 children, aged 6-7 years, who were enrolled in a population-based study. Parents completed standardized questionnaires. Logistic regression was used to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs), while adjusting for several confounders and simultaneously considering BMI, regular sports activity, TV viewing and selected dietary …
Evaluation of immunologic effect of Enniatin A and quantitative determination in feces, urine and serum on treated Wistar rats.
2014
Abstract Study of dietary supplementation with ENN A mycotoxin during 28 days of exposure time on Wistar rats to determinate its levels in serum, urine and feces and, to evaluate the immunologic effect in peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) is presented. The first method for ENN A extraction, determination and detection by LC–MS/MS in serum, urine and feces samples is reported. ENN A food dose administrated was detected in serum samples and influenced lymphocyte phenotyping. Levels in serum were founded from the second week of the experiment; reaching values of 4.76 μg/ml on the fourth week, which corresponds to 3.24 μg/ml in blood. PBL as T helper (CD4 + ) were presented in greater percenta…
Left ventricular diastolic and systolic function in normotensive obese subjects: influence of degree and duration of obesity.
1992
The present study was carried out to evaluate systolic and diastolic parameters in overweight and moderately obese, but otherwise healthy subjects, and in a lean control group, to determine whether degree and duration of obesity can influence left ventricular function. A total of 27 subjects, 17 overweight or with moderate obesity and 10 lean, healthy subjects were included. Patients were divided into three groups according to their body mass index (BMI) and to Garrow's criteria as follows: lean control group (BMI less than 25 kg.m-2); overweight subjects (BMI from 25 to 30 kg.m-2); moderately obese subjects (BMI greater than 30 less than 40 kg.m-2). Systolic and diastolic parameters were m…
