Multiple Authentic Project-Based Experiences and Persistent Learning?
2019
This work-in-progress paper in the research category investigates students’ experiences of learning over two project-based courses, of which the first is taken during bachelor studies and the second is taken during master studies. The research goal was to explore if and how the first project experience was considered beneficial to the latter. A pilot interview was conducted and analyzed for qualitatively different themes. Transformative learning theory (TLT) is introduced as the theoretical framework because of its focus on persistent learning originating in transformations in meaning perspectives. The results are discussed in the context of TLT, and they inform curriculum design and resear…
Exploring the experiences of being an ethnic minority student within undergraduate nurse education: a qualitative study
2019
Abstract Background Students studying in a country where another language is spoken face multiple challenges including their ability to fully integrate with peers and academic pressures in trying to obtain an undergraduate nursing degree. The aim of the study was to explore the lived experiences of students, from varying cultural and ethnic backgrounds, undertaking an undergraduate nursing degree. The interviews were analysed using manifest content analysis according to Graneheim and Lundman. Results Students reported feelings of isolation and the lack of opportunities to integrate…
Fixed versus Growth Mindset Does not Seem to Matter Much
2018
Psychology predicts that a student’s mindset—their implicit theory of intelligence—has an effect on their academic performance. We attempted to corroborate this in the computer science education context by asking the students on two bachelor-level courses, typically taken in the third year of studies, to fill out a standard mindset questionnaire, and analyzing their answers in relation to their grades on those courses. In a sample of 133 students, with only 24 (18 %) students with a clear fixed mindset, there is no detectable correlation between the students’ mindsets and their course grades. An ordinal logistic regression estimates, at the 95 % confidence level, a statistically nonsignific…
Identity and Agency Development in a CLIL-based Teacher Education Program
2020
A consensus exists in applied linguistics that agency and identity are key concepts in understanding teacher development. Although a large body of research has focused on studying language teacher and learner identity and agency separately, less attention has been paid to the relationship of these concepts in individual development. In this contribution, we use an ecological perspective to explore and illustrate the interplay between and development of agency and identity. The participants in the study were primary school teacher students specializing in foreign language pedagogy for younger learners and studying in a CLIL-based teacher education program. The qualitative data were collected…
Perceptions of digital technology in nursing education: A qualitative study.
2021
Abstract Aim The aim of this study was to explore how digital technologies can facilitate interactive learning in a 15-credit theory module on basic nursing. Background Digital platforms are in widespread use in nursing education; however, the rapid technological advancement provides new opportunities to support teaching and learning. This indicates the need to explore how educational digital technologies can be used as an integral part of learning activities to promote quality and relevance in nursing education. This study was carried out at the Department of Nursing Science at a university in Norway. The university has been using a digital platform for many years and has recently adopted …
Experimental macroeconomics: a role-playing experience among bachelor students
2020
This current innovative education project has the main goal of introducing students to experimental economics to help them better understand complex macroeconomic concepts. For this purpose, it is used an online experimental platform to develop a role-playing dynamic with which students become real economic agents. This gamified technique allows students to interact with each other in the goods and production factors markets and, thus, generate a circular flow studied as one of the main macroeconomic principles. The online platform is conceived as a two-sided website: on one hand, students are assigned a role and asked to make decisions; and, on the other, professors can instantaneously acc…
