Selection of microrganism for the mobilization of cellulolityc agricultural biomass for energy production

2012

Selection of microorganisms for the mobilization of cellulolytic agricultural biomass for energy production. R. Di Bonito, D. Taschini, C. Viola, Campi otti C.A. Unit Energy Efficiency in Agriculure, ENEA Casaccia, Roma, Italy The production of biofuels as renewable energy source could significantly reduce the negati ve impact of fossil fuels. However, this activity has resulted in increasing land cultivation specifically with carbohydrate-rich crops for energy production, and resulting shortage of crop production for food . The use of residual agricultural biomass as a substrate for biofuels or biogas production could improve the sustainabi lity of the bio-energy production but sti li requ…

Activity of bacterial seed endophytes of landrace durum wheat for control of Fusarium foot rot

2022

Five bacterial endophytic isolates obtained from durum wheat seeds (landrace “Timilia reste nere”) and identified as belonging to Pantoea (isolates A1, F7, F15 and G1) and Paenibacillus (isolate B) genera on the basis of 16S rDNA gene sequences, were assayed in vitro and in vivo for their ability to inhibit Fusarium culmorum growth and the disease (Fusarium foot rot) it causes in durum wheat. All isolates significantly reduced in vitro growth of F. culmorum in comparison with the control. After 120 hours of incubation, isolates B and G1 showed the greatest mycelial growth inhibition, i.e., respectively, 76 and 74%. When durum wheat “Simeto” seeds were treated with bacterial isolates singly …

Deoxycholic Acid Methyl Ester — a Novel Bacterial Metabolite of Cholic Acid

1985

Summary Methyl deoxycholate was identified as a novel bacterial metabolite of cholate, produced anaerobically by strains of most saccharolytic Bacteroides species ( B. distasonis, B. eggerthii, B. fragilis, B. incommunis, B. thetaiotaomicron, B. uniformis, B. variabilis, B. vulgatus , and unnamed species). It was also detected with a few strains of Eubacterium and Lactobacillus species. Among 2476 freshly isolated human fecal cultures the frequency of carboxyl group esterification was comparable with that of 7α-dehydroxylation (92 versus 102 cultures). Both activities were, however, lost for unknown reasons after serial transfers. Two of ten mixed fecal cultures tested esterified 3α,7α- or …

Preorganization and reorganization as related factors in enzyme catalysis: the chorismate mutase case.

2003

In this paper a deeper insight into the chorismate-to prephenate-rearrangement, catalyzed by Bacillus subtilis chorismate mutase, is provided by means of a combination of statistical quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics simulation methods and hybrid potential energy surface exploration techniques. The main aim of this work is to present an estimation of the preorganization and reorganization terms of the enzyme catalytic rate enhancement. To analyze the first of these, we have studied different conformational equilibria of chorismate in aqueous solution and in the enzyme active site. Our conclusion is that chorismate mutase preferentially binds the reactive conformer of the substrate--that…

Biosorption of lead(II), zinc(II) and nickel(II) from industrial wastewater by Stenotrophomonas maltophilia and Bacillus subtilis

2015

Abstract The biosorption of Pb(II), Zn(II) and Ni(II) from industrial wastewater using Stenotrophomonas maltophilia and Bacillus subtilis was investigated under various experimental conditions regarding pH, metal concentration and contact time. The optimum pH values for the biosorption of the three metals were in the range 5.0-6.0, while the optimal contact time for the two bacterial species was 30 min. Experimental data was analyzed using Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms; the former had a better fit for the biosorption of Pb(II), Zn(II) and Ni(II). The maximum adsorption uptakes (qmax) of the three metals calculated from the Langmuir biosorption equation for S. maltophilia were 133.3, 47.…

Propanediol-1,2-dehydratase and metabolism of glycerol of Lactobacillus brevis

1984

While most strains of heterofermentative lactobacilli and strains of Leuconostoc species contained only traces of a dehydratase reacting with glycerol or propanediol-1,2, three strains of Lactobacillus brevis and one strain of L. buchneri that metabolized glycerol readily in the presence of glucose, contained propanediol-1,2 dehydratase (EC 4.2.1.28). This cobamide requiring enzyme from L. brevis B 18 was partially purified. It reacts with the substrates propanediol-1,2, glycerol and ethanediol-1,2 with the relative activities of about 3:2:1. This ratio remained unchanged throughout the purification procedure. The substrate affinities were measured: propanediol-1,2 K m=0.6 mM, glycerol K m=…

Exoenzymes of Wine Microorganisms

2008

The production of wine from grape juice is predominantly the result of enzymatic reactions. The enzymes originate from the grape itself, from epiphytic fungi like Botrytis cinerea colonizing the grape surface and finally from yeasts and bacteria growing in the must until termination of alcoholic fermentation. Especially nonSaccharomyces yeasts, also called “wild” yeasts, belonging to the genera Kloeckera, Candida, Debaryomyces, Rhodotorula, Pichia, Zygosaccharomyces, Hanseniaspora, Kluyveromyces, and Metschnikowia produce and secrete several enzymes (esterases, glycosidases, lipases, glucanases, proteases, cellulases, etc.) to the periplasmatic space and the medium where they may interact w…

Transport of Sugars and Sugar Alcohols by Lactic Acid Bacteria

2008

Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) play an important role in the fermentation of beverages like wine and beer, and in the production of dairy products, sour dough, sausages and cheese. The knowledge of the genome sequence offers an insight into the metabolism of the bacteria and provides means to optimize the manufacturing of the products. By now genomes of several lactic acid bacteria are sequenced, including wine related bacteria Oenococcus oeni PSU-1, Pediococcus pentosaceus ATCC 25745, Leuconostoc mesenteroides ATCC 8293 (http://www.jgi.doe.gov/; Klaenhammer et al. 2002; Mills et al. 2005) and Lactobacillus plantarum WCFS1 (http://www.cmbi. ru.nl/plantarum/; http://www.lacplantcyc.nl/; Kleerebe…

Iron oxide superparamagnetic nanocarriers bearing amphiphilic N-heterocyclic choline analogues as potential antimicrobial agents

2015

Magnetic nanoparticles represent an advanced tool in biomedicine because they can be simultaneously functionalized and guided using a magnetic field. Iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles precoated with oleic acid and bearing novel antimicrobial N-heterocyclic choline analogues, namely O-, N- and O,N-bis-undecyl-substituted N-(2-hydroxyethyl)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinolinium derivatives, have been obtained as potential biomedical agents for drug delivery and antimicrobial therapy. Structural and size determinations for the novel synthesized magnetic nanosystems were carried out based upon magnetogranulometry, dynamic light-scattering measurements and X-ray diffraction analysis. The most expecte…
