Metal complexes of sulfanilamide derivatives. Crystal structure of [Zn(sulfathiazole)2]·H2O

1993

Abstract The crystal structure of the Zn(sulfathiazole) 2 ·H 2 O complex is reported. The complex crystallizes in the monoclinic space group C 2/ c . The cell dimensions are a = 9.098(3) A, b = 17.871(5) A, c = 14.61(1) A, β = 99.44(6)°, V = 2343(2) A 3 , Z = 4, and D x = 1.68 g/cm 3 . The final conventional R-factor = 0.027 for 2669 “observed” reflections and 191 variables. The Zn ion is surrounded in a regular tetrahedral arrangement by two N amino and two N thiazole atoms pertaining to four sulfathiazole (Hstz) ligands. Each stz anion, acting as a bidentate ligand, chelates to two Zn ions as a bridge through the N thiazole and the N amino atoms. The IR, 13 C NMR in solid state, 1 H NMR, …

Evidence of variable bacterial colonization on coloured elastomeric ligatures during orthodontic treatment : an intermodular comparative study

2018

Background Besides, other factors, the choice of materials used as orthodontic ligatures could be one of the many tools to counter the effects of microbial adhesion, that culminates into dental ailments. Therefore, we assessed bacterial adhesion on elastomeric ligatures with special reference to coloured elastomeric rings during orthodontic treatment. Material and methods A split mouth study, involving 240 samples of different elastomeric ligatures from forty orthodontic patients possessing good oral hygiene was carried out. The archwire was ligated to the brackets on both arches with elastomeric rings (superslick, clear transparent , blue and pink) at predetermined quadrants. After six wee…

Advances in the understanding of mast cell function

2008

Mast cells were formerly thought to contribute mainly to, sometimes even, fatal allergic reactions through the release of biologically highly active cytokines, chemokines, lipid mediators, proteases and biogenic amines. This potential harmful response is triggered by crosslinking of cell-bound IgE by the respective allergen. This review updates our current understanding of the emerging roles of mast cells with an emphasis on their relevance in protective host immunity. The activation of mast cells independently of Immunoglobulin E can lead to the initiation of fast inflammatory reactions, which were shown to be life-saving in murine models of bacterial infections. Besides their critical fun…

Role of the chemokine decoy receptor D6 in balancing inflammation, immune activation, and antimicrobial resistance in Mycobacterium tuberculosis infe…

2008

D6 is a decoy and scavenger receptor for inflammatory CC chemokines. D6-deficient mice were rapidly killed by intranasal administration of low doses of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The death of D6(-/-) mice was associated with a dramatic local and systemic inflammatory response with levels of M. tuberculosis colony-forming units similar to control D6-proficient mice. D6-deficient mice showed an increased numbers of mononuclear cells (macrophages, dendritic cells, and CD4 and CD8 T lymphocytes) infiltrating inflamed tissues and lymph nodes, as well as abnormal increased concentrations of CC chemokines (CCL2, CCL3, CCL4, and CCL5) and proinflammatory cytokines (tumor necrosis factor alpha, int…

Sesterterpenes and macrolide derivatives from the endophytic fungus Aplosporella javeedii.

2020

Abstract Five sesterterpenes (1–5) including two new compounds (1 and 2), as well as a new (6) and a known macrolide (7) were isolated from the endophytic fungus Aplosporella javeedii. The structures of the new compounds were elucidated by analysis of their 1D and 2D NMR and HRMS data as well as by comparison with the literature. Compound 4 and its acetyl derivatives 4a, 4b, 4c which were prepared by acetylation of 4 exhibited moderate cytotoxicity against the mouse lymphoma cell line L5178Y with IC50 values ranging from 6.2 to 12.8 μM, respectively. Moreover, 4a and 4c exhibited also cytotoxicity against human leukemia (Jurkat J16) and lymphoma (Ramos) cell lines. Compound 7 showed strong …

EVALUATION OF AEROBIC AND ANAEROBIC BACTERIAL DECHLORINATION POTENTIAL OF A 1,2-DICHLOROETHANE CONTAMINATED AQUIFER

2023

Chlorinated solvents, belonging to the class of chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons (CAHs), are synthetic organohalide chemicals frequently found as contaminants of groundwater and soil, due to their widespread use in several industrial processes and improper disposal methods. These compounds pose serious health threats because of their toxic and sometimes carcinogenic effects. Among these compounds, 1,2-dichloroethane (1,2-DCA) is one of the most common aquifer contaminants, considered toxic and classified as a possible human carcinogen. Remediation approaches toward these contaminants include conventional cleanup technologies based on physical/chemical methods, and bioremediation, consider…

Purification and identification of chlorophyll c1 from the green alga Mantoniella squamata

1987

Abstract The prasinophycean alga Mantoniella squamata contains besides chlorophyll a and b a third chlorophyll c -like pigment in its light-harvesting antenna. This third chlorophyll was purified by reverse phase and polyethylene chromatography in order to identify its chemical structure. The absorption and fluorescence spectra were measured not only from the doubly purified pigment, but also from its Mg-free derivates. The spectra were compared with those of authentic chlorophyll c and of Mg-2,4-desethyl-2,4-divinylpheoporphyrin a 5 monomethyl ester which was isolated from Rhodobacter capsulata . The results show that the pigment from Mantoniella agrees best with chlorophyll c 1 . In order…

IM30 triggers membrane fusion in cyanobacteria and chloroplasts

2015

The thylakoid membrane of chloroplasts and cyanobacteria is a unique internal membrane system harbouring the complexes of the photosynthetic electron transfer chain. Despite their apparent importance, little is known about the biogenesis and maintenance of thylakoid membranes. Although membrane fusion events are essential for the formation of thylakoid membranes, proteins involved in membrane fusion have yet to be identified in photosynthetic cells or organelles. Here we show that IM30, a conserved chloroplast and cyanobacterial protein of approximately 30 kDa binds as an oligomeric ring in a well-defined geometry specifically to membranes containing anionic lipids. Triggered by Mg2+, membr…

Coupling of Cholesterol and Cone-shaped Lipids in Bilayers Augments Membrane Permeabilization by the Cholesterol-specific Toxins Streptolysin O and V…

2001

Abstract Vibrio cholerae cytolysin (VCC) forms oligomeric pores in lipid bilayers containing cholesterol. Membrane permeabilization is inefficient if the sterol is embedded within bilayers prepared from phosphatidylcholine only but is greatly enhanced if the target membrane also contains ceramide. Although the enhancement of VCC action is stereospecific with respect to cholesterol, we show here that no such specificity applies to the two stereocenters in ceramide; all four stereoisomers of ceramide enhanced VCC activity in cholesterol-containing bilayers. A wide variety of ceramide analogs were as effective asd-erythro-ceramide, as was diacylglycerol, suggesting that the effect of ceramide …

Cholera-Like Enterotoxins and Regulatory T cells

2010

Cholera toxin (CT) and the heat-labile enterotoxin of E. coli (LT), as well as their non toxic mutants, are potent mucosal adjuvants of immunization eliciting mucosal and systemic responses against unrelated co-administered antigens in experimental models and in humans (non toxic mutants). These enterotoxins are composed of two subunits, the A subunit, responsible for an ADP-ribosyl transferase activity and the B subunit, responsible for cell binding. Paradoxically, whereas the whole toxins have adjuvant properties, the B subunits of CT (CTB) and of LT (LTB) have been shown to induce antigen specific tolerance when administered mucosally with antigens in experimental models as well as, rece…
