Hypolipidaemic effects of fenofibrate and fasting in the herbivorous grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) fed a high-fat diet

2008

We investigated whether the hypolipidaemic effect of fenofibrate and fasting observed in most omnivorous mammals may also apply to herbivorous fish. Grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) fed a high-fat (8 %) diet exhibited a marked increase in blood lipids and body fat after 6 weeks. They were then treated with fenofibrate (100 mg/kg body weight) in the same high-fat diet for 2 weeks, followed by fasting for 1 week. Plasma lipid concentration, body fat amount, fatty acid composition, plasma thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances and some parameters related to hepatic fatty acid oxidation were measured, and liver samples were stained for histological examination. Fenofibrate treatment decrea…

Effects of alcohol-free beer on lipid profile and parameters of oxidative stress and inflammation in elderly women

2009

We assessed the influence of alcohol-free beer on factors implicated in atherosclerosis, such as lipid profile, oxidative stress parameters, and proinflammatory cytokines, in postmenopausal women, a population particularly at risk for atherosclerotic disease. The study was carried out in 29 nuns, 58 to 73 y old, who live in a convent with a disciplined, regular, and homogeneous lifestyle. The nuns maintained their habits and diet routine, but their meals were supplemented with 500 mL/d of alcohol-free beer (0.0%) divided into two doses over a 45-d period. Lipid profile, inflammatory markers such as C-reactive protein, interleukins 1 and 6, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha, and parameters of o…

Oxidative tissue damage after phacoemulsification: influence of ophthalmic viscosurgical devices.

2003

To quantify the oxidative tissue damage after phacoemulsification, correlate the damage to the energy applied, and investigate the influence of ophthalmic viscosurgical devices (OVDs).Department of Ophthalmology, University of Mainz, Mainz, Germany. The study comprised 130 eyes operated on by 1 surgeon using the same phacoemulsification machine. Some eyes received an OVD before phacoemulsification and some did not. Energy values were expressed as phaco time; that is, ultrasound (US) time (seconds) after conversion to 100% phaco power. Patients were grouped as follows: Group 1, phaco time less than 20 seconds and no OVD; Group 2, phaco time 20 to 40 seconds and no OVD; Group 3, phaco time mor…

Lipid peroxidation capacities in the myocardium of endurance-trained rats and mice in vitro.

1992

The endurance-training programme in Experiment 1 (Exp. 1) consisted of a total swimming time of 149–159 h per male Han Wistar rat and in Experiment 2 (Exp. 2) the male NMRI-mice run on a treadmill at a speed of 25 m min-1 1 h per day, 5 days a week for 3 weeks. One group of the rat hearts was perfused with 0.3 mm cumene hydroperoxide (CumOOH) while the others were fractioned (mitochondria, sarcolemma and sarcoplasmic reticulum) and these cell fractions and homogenates were used to determine the total concentration of peroxidative lipids and the susceptibility to lipid peroxidation. The perfusion with CumOOH caused the release of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) into the perfu…

Inter-relationship between platelet-derived microparticles and oxidative stress in patients with venous thromboembolism

2020

Background: Hypercoagulative conditions play a key role in venous thromboembolism (VTE). Inflammation is currently linked to VTE, but the potential role of circulating microparticles and oxidative stress (OxS) must be elucidated. The aim of this study was to evaluate platelet-derived microparticles and surrogate OxS biomarkers in patients diagnosed with VTE through a case&ndash

Intrinsic changes on automatism, conduction, and refractoriness by exercise in isolated rabbit heart.

2001

We have studied the intrinsic modifications on myocardial automatism, conduction, and refractoriness produced by chronic exercise. Experiments were performed on isolated rabbit hearts. Trained animals were submitted to exercise on a treadmill. The parameters investigated were 1) R-R interval, noncorrected and corrected sinus node recovery time (SNRT) as automatism index; 2) sinoatrial conduction time; 3) Wenckebach cycle length (WCL) and retrograde WCL, as atrioventricular (A-V) and ventriculoatrial conduction index; and 4) effective and functional refractory periods of left ventricle, A-V node, and ventriculoatrial retrograde conduction system. Measurements were also performed on coronary…

Efecto antioxidante e hipolipemiante del pimentón ahumado en individuos sanos Antioxidant and hypolipidaemic effect of smoked paprika in healthy subj…

2010

The healthy properties and antioxidant activity of smoked paprika in healthy male non-smoking students (age 20.6 ± 1.7 years), from Universidad de Extremadura (Spain), who consumed (2 g/day, 20 times, over 30 days) smoked (La Vera, Extremadura, Spain) or non-smoked (Novelda, Alicante, Spain) paprika were investigated. Anthropometric and cardiovascular measurements and blood and urine samples were taken from overnight fasted subjects for biochemical, hematological, and immunological measurements. The ingestion of smoked paprika increased the urinary excretion of 1-hydroxypyrene (from 38.6 ± 24.9 to 109.2 ± 85.6 nmol/mol; p < 0.05). Plasma triglyceride and total cholesterol levels were signif…

Interferon decreases serum lipid peroxidation products of hepatitis C patients

1994

Abstract Thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) concentration in serum has been determined in healthy subjects and in patients suffering acute hepatitis and chronic cases of hepatitis C. Treatment with interferon of the chronic active hepatitis C patients, 5 × 10 6 U three times a week during 2 months, led in those patients whose SGPT activity normalized in serum, to a concomitant decrease in serum TBARS content. The possible theoretical involvement of peroxidation and antioxidants in this beneficial effect of interferon in hepatitis C patients is discussed. The results presented confirm the value of TBARS as laboratory test in the management of liver diseases and as a useful tool …

In vitro free radical scavenging capacity of thyroid hormones and structural analogues.

2001

It was reported that thyroid hormones decreased Cu(2+)-induced low-density lipoprotein (LDL) oxidation in vitro. Here, we investigated free radical scavenging capacities of thyroid hormones (3,5,3'-tri-iodo-L-thyronine (T(3)), thyroxine (T(4)) and 3,3',5'-tri-iodo-L-thyronine (rT(3))) and structural analogues (L-thyronine (T(0)), 3,5,3'tri-iodothyroacetic acid (TA(3)) and 3,5,3',5'-tetra-iodothyroacetic acid (TA(4))), using three different models of free radical generation. T(0), T(3) and TA(3) slowed down production of conjugated diene and thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances during LDL oxidation by 2,2'-azobis-[2-amidinopropane] (water-soluble), whereas rT(3), T(4) and TA(4) had practi…
