2019
This paper relates an experience carried out at a higher education setting, specifically involving 3rd-year students in the Early Childhood Education degree programme. In relation to this, the paper presents an educational model that takes into account the need to develop ethical and social competences and gives importance to interdisciplinary education in real contexts. To this aim, all the academic modules that form part of this degree programme devote 25% of their teaching time and evaluation to the development of an interdisciplinary project. This paper will describe one of these projects, entitled "Solve a real problem", the design of which is informed by service-learning and problem-b…
Overview on Sequential Mining Algorithms and Their Extensions
2018
The main purpose of data mining is to extract hidden, important and nontrivial information from a database. Sequential Pattern Mining is a data mining technique that aims to obtain and analyze frequent subsequences from sequences of events or items with or without time constraint. The importance of a sequence can be measured based on different factors such as the frequency of their occurrence, their length and also their profit. The pattern mining or the discovery of important and unexpected patterns and information was first introduced in 1990 with the well-known Apriori algorithm. Then, and after many studies on frequent pattern mining, a new approach appeared: Sequential Pattern Mining. …
A study of dimethyltin(IV)-L-cysteinate in aqueous solution
1988
The in vivo activity of some R2Sn-L-cysteinate complexes (R = Me, Et, n-Bu) against murine P-388 leukaemia has been tested. Only the Et2Sn(IV) complex showed a marginal positive effect. Trigonal bipyramidal tin environments with two carbon (R) atoms and the sulfur atom in the equatorial plane and oxygen (carboxylate) and nitrogen (NH2) in apical positions have been proposed for the solid compexes (R = Me, Et, n-Bu, Ph) on the basis of experimental Mossbauer parameters and infrared (IR) data. Aqueous solutions of the Me2SnL-cysteinate have been studied by IR, 1H NMR and 119Sn Mossbauer spectroscopy (in frozen solution) at different pH values to identify the Me2Sn(IV) species present. At pH >…
Oxidative transformation of aryls using molybdenum pentachloride.
2012
Molybdenum pentachloride combines a strong Lewis acid character with an unusually high oxidation potential creating a powerful reagent for oxidative transformations. Since the oxidative coupling reaction of aryls is induced at an extraordinarily high reaction rate, a variety of labile groups, e.g. iodo, tert-alkyl, etc., are tolerated on the aromatic core. Furthermore, the co-formed molybdenum salts can either be exploited for template effects to obtain uncommon geometries in a preferred manner, or redox-play starts after aqueous workup. Therefore MoCl(5) represents a unique and easily available reagent.
DFT computational study on Fe(III)-N,N′-ethylene-bis(salicylideneiminato) derivatives
2005
DFT calculations, at unrestricted B3LYP level, have been performed on the structures of three iron(III) complexes, Fe(Salen)Cl, [Fe(Salen)]+ and [Fe(Salen)OH2]+, where Salen is the anion of Schiff base ligand N,N′-ethylene-bis (salicylideneimine), considering the spin multiplicity (S) values 2, 4 and 6. The results obtained have been compared with the available structural an magnetic experimental data, allowing us to conclude that a stable form of the FeIII(Salen) complex in aqueous solution should be characterized by an energy stabilization of the S=4 compared to the S=6 state.
Electrochemistry, spectroelectrochemistry, chloride binding, and O2 catalytic reactions of free-base porphyrin-cobalt corrole dyads.
2005
Three face-to-face linked porphyrin-corrole dyads were investigated as to their electrochemistry, spectroelectrochemistry, and chloride-binding properties in dichloromethane or benzonitrile. The same three compounds were also investigated as to their ability to catalyze the electroreduction of dioxygen in aqueous 1 M HClO4 or HCl when adsorbed on a graphite electrode. The characterized compounds are represented as (PCY)H2Co, where P = a porphyrin dianion; C = a corrole trianion; and Y = a biphenylenyl, 9,9-dimethylxanthenyl, or anthracenyl spacer, which links the two macrocycles in a face-to-face arrangement. An axial binding of one or two Cl- ligands to the cobalt center of the corrole is …
Arborescent Supply Chains: the effect of OUT policies
2013
The objective of this paper is to analyze the impact of the smoothing replenishment rules on a divergent supply chain. To this purpose we simulate a classical four echelon serially- linked supply chain model and an arborescent supply chain model under two scenarios, i.e. classical OUT and smoothing replenishment rule. We show that the divergent supply chain structure always performs worse than the serial supply chain and how smoothing the order pattern may decrease this discrepancy.
Related haloarchaeal pleomorphic viruses contain different genome types
2012
Archaeal viruses have been the subject of recent interest due to the diversity discovered in their virion architectures. Recently, a new group of haloarchaeal pleomorphic viruses has been discovered. It is distinctive in terms of the virion morphology and different genome types (ssDNA/dsDNA) harboured by rather closely related representatives. To date there are seven isolated viruses belonging to this group. Most of these share a cluster of five conserved genes, two of which encode major structural proteins. Putative proviruses and proviral remnants containing homologues of the conserved gene cluster were also identified suggesting a long-standing relationship of these viruses with their ho…
