Climatic conditions influence emerging mycotoxin presence in wheat grown in Romania – A 2-year survey

Abstract The correlation between the occurrence of four enniatins (ENA, ENA1, ENB, and ENB1) and beauvericin (BEA) and the weather parameters during anthesis and preharvest period was studied in 97 wheat samples collected in 2014 and 2015 across three counties from central and south Romania (Brasov, Dâmboviţa, and Teleorman). The highest mean values of ENA (16.1 μg kg −1 ) and ENB (147.1 μg kg −1 ) were measured in the samples from Brasov county in the harvest year 2015, whereas for ENA1 and ENB1 the highest means (55.2 μg kg −1 , and 108.0 μg kg −1 , respectively) were noted in samples from Teleorman county in 2014. Metabolites from a collection of selected fungal isolates have been screened for insecticidal activity against the aphid Acyrthosiphon pisum. Crude organic extracts of culture filtrates from six fungal isolates (Paecilomyces lilacinus, Pochonia chlamydosporia, Penicillium griseofulvum, Beauveria bassiana, Metarhizium anisopliae and Talaromyces pinophilus) caused mortality of aphids within 72 h after treatment. In vitro mechanisms of Beauvericin toxicity: A review.

Beauvericin (BEA) is a mycotoxin produced by many species of fungus Fusarium and by Beauveria bassiana; BEA is a natural contaminant of cereals and cereals based products and possesses a wide variety of biological properties. The mechanism of action seems to be related to its ionophoric activity, that increases ion permeability in biological membranes. As a consequence, BEA causes cytotoxicity in several cell lines and is capable to produce oxidative stress at molecular level. Beauvericin and enniatin B effects on a human lymphoblastoid Jurkat T-cell model

Abstract Several mycotoxins exert their effect on the immunological system; some are classified as immunotoxic. Jurkat T-cells were used to study toxic effects of beauvericin (BEA) and enniatin B (ENN B). Both are not legislated mycotoxins with increasing presence in feed and food. Concentrations studied were from 1 to 15 μM at 24, 48 and 72 h. Cell death by increasing the percentage of apoptotic/necrotic cells was: BEA > ENN B. IC50 values ranged from 3 to 7.5 μM for BEA. ENN B 15 μM decreased viability (21-29%). The percentage of apoptotic/necrotic cells was BEA > ENN B at 24 h but not at 48 h. Cytotoxic effects induced by patulin, sterigmatocystin and beauvericin on CHO-K1 cells.

Mycotoxins are produced by different genera of fungi; mainly Aspergillus, Penicillium and Fusarium. The natural co-occurrence of beauvericin (BEA), patulin (PAT) and sterigmatocystin (STE) has been proved in feed and food commodities. This study investigates the cytotoxicity of individual and combined mycotoxins BEA, PAT and STE. The cytotoxicity on immortalized ovarian cells (CHO-K1) was evaluated using the MTT assay. Mouse tissue distribution and persistence of the food-born fusariotoxins Enniatin B and Beauvericin

The fusariotoxins Enniatin B (Enn B) and Beauvericin (Bea) have recently aroused interest as food contaminants and as potential anticancer drugs. However, limited data are available about their toxic profile. Aim of this study was to investigate their pharmacological behavior in vivo and their persistence in mice. Recently, in vitro anti-cancer properties of beauvericin, a fungal metabolite were shown in various cancer cell lines. In this study, we assessed the specificity of this effect by comparing beauvericin cytotoxicity in malignant versus non-malignant cells. Moreover, we tested in vivo anticancer effects of beauvericin by treating BALB/c and CB-17/SCID mice bearing murine CT-26 or human KB-3-1-grafted tumors, respectively.
