Observational study on risk factors determining residual dizziness after successful benign paroxysmal positional vertigo treatment: The role of subcl…
2018
Benign myoclonic epilepsy in infancy: neuropsychological and behavioural outcome
2003
Benign myoclonic epilepsy in infancy (BMEI) is a rare syndrome of idiopathic generalized epilepsies with onset below 3 years of age. It has been reported that BMEI is associated with a good prognosis, however, recently some studies suggest less favourable neuropsychological outcome. We report a long-term follow-up of seven patients with BMEI. Seizure outcome and neuropsychological, cognitive, and behavioural evolution were discussed for each of them. At the end of follow-up, 86% of children showed neuropsychological and intellectual disorders: two children had mental retardation, three patients achieved a borderline IQ and one normal but low IQ. All but one displayed neuropsychological disa…
Sexual dysfunctions after transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP): evidence from a retrospective study on 264 patients
2015
Objectives: Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and sexual dysfunctions are diseases with a high prevalence in aged men. Several studies have found a link between BPH and LUTS resulting from deterioration in sexual function in men aged 50 years and older for whom TURP is considered the gold standard. The impact of TURP on sexual functions still remain uncertain, nor is it clear what pathophysiological mechanism underlying the emergence of new episodes of Erectile Dysfunction (ED) following TURP in patients with normal sexual function before surgery, while retrograde ejaculation and ejaculate volume reduction represent a clear side effect; derived from BPH treatment. The aim of this study was…
Sex hormones and risk of liver tumor.
2007
The liver is morphologically and functionally modulated by sex hormones. Long-term use of oral contraceptives (OCs) and anabolic androgenic steroids (AASs) can induce both benign (hemangioma, adenoma, and focal nodular hyperplasia [FNH]) and malignant (hepatocellular carcinoma [HCC]) hepatocellular tumors. Hepatic adenomas (HAs) are rare, benign neoplasms usually occurring in young women, the development and the complications of which have been related to the strength of OCs and the duration of their use. HA incidence has fallen since the introduction of pills containing smaller amounts of estrogens. FNH is a benign lesion, most commonly seen in young women, which is thought to represent a …
Sudden sensorineural hearing loss associated with inner ear lesions detected by magnetic resonance imaging.
2017
Although recent advances in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques have contributed to the detection of tiny lesions in the internal auditory canal (IAC) that may be responsible for sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL), there have been relatively few studies on the clinical characteristics of intra-labyrinthine hemorrhage (ILH) and labyrinthitis versus those regarding IAC tumors. Our purpose was to investigate the frequency of those IAC lesions on MRI and their clinical characteristics. Initial MRIs of 200 patients with SSNHL (93 men, 107 women; mean age = 48.61 years, range: 18-84 years), as well as detailed clinical histories, audiological examinations, and thyroid function, lip…
Outcomes of Hartmann's procedure and subsequent intestinal restoration. Which patients are most likely to undergo reversal?
2018
Abstract Background Aim of the study was to describe characteristics and outcomes of Hartmann's procedure (HP) and subsequent intestinal restoration. Methods Retrospective study including all patients who underwent HP over a period of 16 consecutive years. We propose a classification and regression tree for a more accurate view of the relationship between the variables related to intestinal restoration and their weighting in the decision to reverse HP. Results 533 patients were included. Overall morbidity rate of HP was 53.5% and mortality 21.0%. Overall morbidity of the intestinal continuity reconstruction was 47.3% and mortality 0.9%. Patients with a benign disease, aged under 69 years an…
Histologically benign metastatic meningioma: morphological and cytogenetic study. Case report.
2003
✓ The authors report on a 75-year-old man with histologically benign fibroblastic meningioma metastasizing to the lung, liver, spleen, and kidney. The original tumor exhibited a complex karyotype involving different structural and numerical anomalies associated with monosomy of chromosome 22. The implication of chromosome 1p36 was confirmed by fluorescence in situ hybridization in most interphase nuclei. Metastases occurred 4 months after incomplete resection with prior therapeutic embolization. The recurrent tumor in turn displayed anaplastic features and an increased Ki-67 labeling index. Genetic alterations in such morphologically benign meningiomas have been implicated in the malignant …

Model‐based meta‐analysis of the time to first acute urinary retention or benign prostatic hyperplasia‐related surgery in patients with moderate or s…
2021
Aims Combination therapy of 5α‐reductase inhibitor and α‐blocker is a guideline‐endorsed therapeutic approach for patients with moderate‐to‐severe lower urinary tract symptoms or benign prostatic hyperplasia (LUTS/BPH) who are at risk of disease progression. We aimed to disentangle the contribution of clinical and demographic baseline characteristics affecting the risk of acute urinary retention or BPH‐related surgery (AUR/S) from the effect of treatment with drugs showing symptomatic and disease‐modifying properties. Methods A time‐to‐event model was developed using pooled data from patients (n = 10 238) enrolled into six clinical studies receiving placebo, tamsulosin, dutasteride or tamsu…
A rare case of Enchondromatosis of the knees and hands with involvement of Hoffa's fat pad and peri-articular soft-tissues
2013
We report a case of a 56-year old man with chronic pain in both knees for several years. This patient had already undergone surgery on his left knee in 2002 after an x-ray showed multiple lytic and well margined lesions in the distal femur and proximal tibia with ground-glass matrix, involving Hoffa's fat pad and the patellar ligament. Histology was consistent with an enchondroma. The most recent MRI examination showed enchondromatosis involving both knees with bilateral extension into Hoffa's fat pad and the patellar ligament. Subsequently, we performed an additional radiographic examination of the hands and feet, as well as an MRI of both hands to identify other possible enchondromas in t…
