Abstract Reactive oxygen and nitrogen species contribute to the pathophysiology of inflammatory conditions. We have studied the effects of a novel superoxide scavenger, 4-dimethylamino-3′,4′-dimethoxychalcone (CH11) in macrophages and in vivo. CH11 has been shown to inhibit the chemiluminescence induced by zymosan in mouse peritoneal macrophages and the cytotoxic effects of superoxide. In the same cells, the modulation by superoxide of nitric oxide (NO) production in response to zymosan was investigated. Antioxidant activity of melatonin in human erythrocytes, exposed to oxidative stress by cumene hydroperoxide (cumOOH), was investigated. CumOOH at 300 microM progressively oxidized a 1% suspension of red blood cells (RBCs), leading to 100% hemolysis in 180 min. Malondialdehyde and protein carbonyls in the membrane showed a progressive increase, as a result of the oxidative damage to membrane lipids and proteins, reaching peak values after 30 and 40 min, respectively. The membrane antioxidant vitamin E and the cytosolic reduced glutathione (GSH) were totally depleted in 20 min. Ionic liquids versus amine solutions in biogas upgrading: the level of volatile organic compounds

Background: This article provides information related to the occurrence of volatile organic compounds before and after biogas purification, by means of both aqueous amine solutions and ionic liquids. Results & discussion: Encouraging results were obtained. Under the experimental conditions, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate ionic liquid appeared to perform at least two-times better than aqueous amines solutions, since it captured 65 wt% of the identified volatile organic compounds, while aqueous amine solutions retained around 35 wt% only. Emerging brominated flame retardants and dechlorane-related compounds in European eels (Anguilla anguilla) from Latvian lakes

Abstract Fifteen halogenated flame retardants (HFRs) including seven emerging brominated flame retardants (EBFRs) and eight dechlorane-related compounds (DRCs) were analyzed in eels (Anguilla anguilla) sampled from five Latvian lakes. Out of the seven EBFRs, hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) and decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) were found in eels in quantifiable concentrations, up to 6.58 and 33.0 ng g−1 lipid weight (l.w.), respectively. The mean total concentration of DRCs (∑DRC) in the samples was 0.62 ng g−1 l.w. and the geographical distribution of DRC contamination was nearly uniform among the selected lakes. Development of a simulation chamber for the evaluation of dermal absorption of volatile organic compounds

Abstract An exposition chamber has been designed and developed for the production of contaminated atmospheres with fixed and known concentration of volatile organic compounds. The proposed chamber has been evaluated for the determination of in-vitro diffusion parameters, such as flux and lag time for benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX). Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and Strat-M® membranes were evaluated, including the effect of membrane thickness, from 0.5 to 3.0 mm, on the diffusion parameters. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are habitually found in both outdoor and indoor environments, may represent a significant health risk. In this context, pregnancy is a critical period since foetuses are more vulnerable than adults to exposure to toxic compounds. The objective of this study is to present the preliminary results of a series of measurements of outdoor (O), indoor (I) and personal exposure (P) to benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, o-xylene and m,p-xylene (BTEX) in 107 pregnant women from two areas in Spain, namely Valencia and Sabadell. Chiral Polyisocyanates from an Azomonomer with a Very High Chiral Induction

The synthesis of new chiral polyisocyanates is described. For this purpose a new chiral azobenzene containing monomer with the chiral center in α-position to the isocyanate group was synthesized. The anionic copolymerization was carried out in THF as solvent with potassium cyanide that was complexed by 18-crown-6 as initiator. This allowed a better control of the reaction and thereby the synthesis of polyisocyanates with a fairly low polydispersity. The copolymers show an extremely high transfer of chirality from the chiral side groups to the helical backbone in dilute solution. Abstract Four chiral donor–π-acceptor azobenzene dye conjugates were synthesized and characterized. Chiral moieties, namely (S)-(+)-2-(6-methoxy-2-naphthyl)propionic acid (naproxen) and (S)-2-aminopropionic acid ( l -alanine), were attached to either the donor end or the acceptor site of the azo compound using ester or amide bonds, respectively. The structures of the molecules were verified using 1H NMR, 13C NMR and ESI TOF mass spectrometry; spectral properties were evaluated with UV–vis and CD spectrometry whilst thermal stability was determined by TGA. Abstract For the development of electro optical active polyurethanes six new derivatives of 2-{(2-hydroxyethyl)-[4-(4-nitrophenylazo)phenyl]amino}ethanol and two of 2-{(2-hydroxyethyl)-[4-(5-nitropyridin-2-ylazo)phenyl]amino}ethanol were synthesized by azocoupling reaction.
