Spectrophotometric determination of chlorhexidine with bromocresol green by flow-injection and manual methods

Abstract A spectrophotometric study of the chlorhexidine/bromocresol green/Triton X-100 system is reported; at pH 5.3, both 2:1 and 1:1 bromocresol green/chlorhexidine complexes are formed. In the manual spectrophotometric method, Beer's law is obeyed for chlorhexidine concentrations of 2.9–32.2 μg ml −1 (r.s.d. 0.4–1.3%); the molar absorptivity is 12 500 l mol −1 cm −1 . In the flow-injection method, the calibration graph is linear for the chlorhexidine range 23.0–83.9 μg ml −1 (r.s.d. 0.8%); the injection is ca. 60 h −1 . Benzocaine, acetylsalicylic acid, ascorbic acid and sucrose are tolerated at 10 −2 −10 −3 M levels. Hibitane 5% was analyzed successfully.
Anesthetic efficacy of Oraqix versus Hurricaine and placebo for pain control during non-surgical periodontal treatment

Objectives: To evaluate the efficacy of Oraqix® during scaling and root planing (SRP) in comparison with 20% benzocaine and placebo. Study Design: 15 patients requiring 4 sessions of SRP were enrolled. For each patient, Oraqix®, Hurricaine®, vaseline or no anesthetic product were randomly assigned each to a quadrant. Treatment pain was evaluated on a 100 mm Visual Analog Scale (VAS) and on a Verbal Rating Scale (VRS). The amount of product administered, the need to re-anesthetise, patient and operator satisfaction and the onset of side-effects were also recorded. Allergic Contact Dermatitis to Benzocaine: The Importance of Concomitant Positive Patch Test Results

Local anesthetics are widely used in clinical practice, and adverse effects are not uncommon. Delayed hypersensitivity reactions are among the most common effects, but immediate-type reactions may also occur. Patch testing should be considered in patients with hypersensitivity reactions. We present a case of allergic contact dermatitis to benzocaine that was detected incidentally by patch testing and highlight the importance of correctly interpreting patch test results when there are concomitant positive reactions.
Comparation of the eutectic mixture of lidocaine/prilocain versus benzocaine gel in children

Objective: To compare the anesthetic effect of a non commercial eutectic mixture of 4% lidocaine/ prilocaine (PLO 4%) and 20% benzocaine gel (Hur- ricaine®), as topical anesthetic, prior to inferior al- veolar nerve block and buccal infiltration anesthesia in 5 - 12 year old children.
