The effects of physical training without equipment on pain perception and balance in the elderly: A randomized controlled trial

BACKGROUND: Research supports a link between exercise and falls prevention in the older population. OBJECTIVES: Our aims were to evaluate pain perception and balance skills in a group of elderly subjects and to examine the consequences of a standardized equipment-free exercise program intervention on these variables. The study utilized a randomized controlled trial method. METHODS: 92 subjects were recruited from a rural Sicilian village (Resuttano, Sicily, Italy). Endogenous timing with infinitely many firms

Abstract A model with constant marginal costs is considered where firms choose first a period for production and then the amount to produce when competing in the market according to the resulting timing decisions. Multiple equilibria arise allowing for infinitely many industry output configurations encompassing one limit-output dominant firm and the Cournot equilibrium with free entry as extreme cases. Les followers ont-ils vraiment de l'importance dans le modèle de Stackelberg?

In this paper, we consider a T-stage linear model of Stackelberg oligopoly. First, we show geometrically and analytically that under the two conditions of linear market demand and identical constant marginal costs, the T-stage Stackelberg model reduces to a model where T oligopolies exploit residual demand sequentially. At any stage, leaders behave as if followers did not matter. Second, we study social welfare and convergence toward competitive equilibrium. Especially, we consider the velocity of convergence as the number of firms increases. The convergence is faster when reallocating firms from the most to the less populated cohort until equalizing the size of all cohorts.

Stackelberg equilibrium with multiple firms and setup costs

Abstract I provide conditions that guarantee that a Stackelberg game with a setup cost and an integer number of identical leaders and followers has an equilibrium in pure strategies. The main feature of the game is that when the marginal follower leaves the market the price jumps up, so that a leader’s payoff is neither continuous nor quasiconcave. Micro lensing induced lineshapes in a single mode cold-atom hollow-core fiber interface

We report on the observation of strong transmission line shape alterations in a cold-atom-hollow-core-fiber interface. We show that this can lead to a significant overestimation of the assigned resonant optical depth for high atom densities. By modeling light beam propagation in an inhomogeneous dispersive medium, we attribute the observations to micro lensing in the atomic ensemble in combination with the mode selection of the atom-fiber interface. The approach is confirmed by studies of Rydberg electromagnetically induced transparency line shapes.

Failure Map of Composite Laminate Mechanical Joint

The aim of this research is to investigate the pin/hole contact stress of a composite laminate and failure modes when submitted to tensile bearing tests. The limit loads and failure modes are evaluated as a function of pin diameter and hole position. Analyzing the joint geometry effect on the fracture mechanisms, a failure map is obtained, identifying three regions of typical failure modes of mechanically fastened joints. An Ising ferromagnet with an antiferromagnetic surface layer: A simple model for magnetic surface reconstruction

Simple cubic Ising lattices are studied by Monte Carlo simulation, using a thin film geometry (usually 40 atomic layers thick), with nearest neighbour ferromagnetic exchange J in the bulk and nearest neighbour antiferromagnetic interaction Js between surface spins. Applying a technique of preferential sampling in the surface layers, we investigate the ordering for a variety of values of JsJ and for various temperatures. For JsAF < Js < − 0.25J (where JsAF ≈ − 2.01J) ferromagnetic ordering occurs at a higher temperature than the antiferromagnetic surface ordering, while for − 0.25J < Js no antiferromagnetic long range order is possible. Paramagnetic single-molecule magnets (SMMs) interacting with the ferromagnetic electrodes of a magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) produce a new system. The properties and future scope of new systems differ dramatically from the properties of isolated molecules and ferromagnets.
