Stimuli-responsive bile acid-based metallogels forming in aqueous media

Abstract The synthesis and gelation properties of a picolinic acid conjugated bile acid derivative in the presence of metal salts along with the stimuli-responsiveness of the systems are reported. The gels are formed in the presence of Cu 2+ ions in the solvent systems composed of 30–50% of organic solvent (MeOH, acetonitrile, or acetone) in water. The gels respond to various stimuli: they can be formed upon sonication or shaking, and their gel–sol transformation can be triggered by a variety of chemical species. NMR, MS, and SEM techniques are exploited in order to gain a deeper insight on the self-assembled systems.

Recent interest in the role of microbiota in health and disease has implicated gut microbiota dysbiosis in psychiatric disorders including major depressive disorder. Several antidepressant drugs that belong to the class of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors have been found to display antimicrobial activities. In fact, one of the first antidepressants discovered serendipitously in the 1950s, the monoamine-oxidase inhibitor Iproniazid, was a drug used for the treatment of tuberculosis. Mirizzi syndrome type V complicated with both cholecystobiliary and cholecystocolic fistula: a case report

Abstract Mirizzi syndrome (MS) is a common bile duct (CBD) obstruction caused by extrinsic compression from an impacted stone in the cystic duct or infundibulum of the gallbladder. Patients affected by MS may present abdominal pain and jaundice. A 37-year-old male with neurologic residuals post-encephalitis arrived at the emergency department reporting abdominal pain, jaundice and fever. An ultrasound of the abdomen identified cholecystolithiasis with a dilated CBD. He did not undergo CT or MRI due to poor compliance and parents’ disagreement. Ischemic type biliary lesions in histidine-tryptophan-ketoglutarate (HTK) preserved liver grafts.

Ischemic type biliary lesions lead to considerable morbidity following orthotopic liver transplantation. The exact pathogenesis is unknown. One major hypothesis is that insufficient perfusion of the arterial vessels of the biliary tree, especially under perfusion with the high viscous University of Wisconsin solution, might be responsible for ischemic type biliary lesions. A small-bowel segment as a total extrahepatic bile duct replacement.

• The effect of a small-bowel segment as a total extrahepatic bile duct replacement, with preservation of the bile passage through the papilla of Vater, was examined in 12 pigs followed up for 420 days. No complications during or after surgery were observed in any of the animals. The laboratory parameters were within normal range during the entire observation period. No anastomotic stenosis was evident on percutaneous transhepatic cholangiography in animals examined 2, 6, or 12 months after surgery. The intrahepatic biliary tract was not dilated. To induce dietary atherosclerosis in mice, high-fat/high-cholesterol (HF) diets are frequently supplemented with cholic acid (CA). This diet produces low plasma levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and high levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL). However, HF diets without any added CA, which more closely resemble human diets, increase levels of both HDL and LDL, suggesting that CA may be responsible for the lowering of HDL.
