Language is a powerful tool. Linguistic creativity provides the means to new ways of knowing, thinking, and being, and allows a new set of dialogues to emerge. This paper illuminates how Guillermo Gómez-Peña, a Chicano performance artist, writer, activist and educator uses language to do just this. In this paper, I will specifically focus on Gómez-Peña’s use of monolingual English and Spanish, as well as his application of code-mixed dialogue and illustrate how his linguistic innovation reflects his position on Border Culture. peerReviewed

This article is based on language biographies acquired as part of the Polish-German LangGener project. Based on the assumption that biographical research may turn out to be cognitively interesting when analyzing identity and attitude towards the language, the purpose of the article is to reconstruct the identity of German-born Upper Silesians, whose identity, as a result of shifting borders after World War II and changing the prevailing language, is not static and whose language biographies are marked by the experience of a lack of continuity and cracks. AbstractThis article is about navigating asylum, employment and language policy in a new country as an asylum seeker. Through the story of one individual, we show that profound inequalities are exacerbated when forced migrants are limited in their choice of language they might study or use. The individual is Tailor F, an Iraqi man seeking asylum, and the country is Finland, officially bilingual, with a majority language (Finnish) and a minority language (Swedish). Early language contact research often focused on the so-called explicit language mix-ing, where the elements of one language were clearly present in the second language. This article is devoted to the less frequent manifestations of the so-called implicit lan-guage mixing, where only structures of one language are used, whereas the means of expression are taken from the other language. The language policy of the European Union has the goal that every citizen will be bilingual and everybody will be able to communicate in two diQ erent languages besides one’s mother tongue. The aim of this article is to investigate the conditions for reaching these goals among people with immigrant backgrounds. The article provides an overview of bilingualism among one group of adults with Hungarian background in Finland. The focus is on language repertoire (e.g. the self-assessed language pro+ ciency), language choice between Finnish and Hungarian, the role of the minority language in their everyday lives and the future prospect for maintenance of Hungarian.
