New method for remote and repeatable monitoring of intraocular pressure variations

We present initial steps toward a new measurement device enabling high-precision, noncontact remote and repeatable monitoring of intraocular pressure (IOP)-based on an innovative measurement principle. Using only a camera and a laser source, the device measures IOP by tracking the secondary speckle pattern trajectories produced by the reflection of an illuminating laser beam from the iris or the sclera. The device was tested on rabbit eyes using two different methods to modify IOP: via an infusion bag and via mechanical pressure. Donnan equilibrium of ionic drugs in pH-dependent fixed charge membranes: theoretical modeling.

Abstract We have studied theoretically the partition equilibrium of a cationic drug between an electrolyte solution and a membrane with pH-dependent fixed charges using an extended Donnan formalism. The aqueous solution within the fixed charge membrane is assumed to be in equilibrium with an external aqueous solution containing six ionic species: the cationic drug (DH + ), the salt cations (Na + and Ca 2+ ), the salt anion (Cl − ), and the hydrogen and hydroxide ions. Iron is an essential redox element that functions as a cofactor in many metabolic pathways. Critical enzymes in DNA metabolism, including multiple DNA repair enzymes (helicases, nucleases, glycosylases, demethylases) and ribonucleotide reductase, use iron as an indispensable cofactor to function. Recent striking results have revealed that the catalytic subunit of DNA polymerases also contains conserved cysteine-rich motifs that bind iron–sulfur (Fe/S) clusters that are essential for the formation of stable and active complexes. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are nano-scale particles that are released from eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells. EVs in parasitological studies have been mostly employed for immunotherapy of autoimmune diseases, vaccination, and diagnosis. Bio materials with reclaimed asphalt: from lab mixes properties to non-damaged full scale monitoring and mechanical simulation

Three innovative environmentally friendly pavement materials, designed with 50% of Reclaimed Asphalt and three different biomaterials (2 bio-additivated bitumens and 1 bio-binder), were produced in an industrial plant. These mixes were tested in lab and also at full scale using an Accelerated Pavement Test facility. The asphalt mix viscoelastic properties were measured in lab and their intrinsic viscoelastic response were simulated. These rheological models are used to simulate the pavement mechanical response using both elastic and viscoelastic multilayer codes. Hydrophilic and Hydrophobic Polymeric Derivatives of Anti-Inflammatory Agents Such as Alclofenac, Ketoprofen, and Ibuprofen

Macromolecular prodrugs of a hydrophilic polymer [α,β-poly( N- hydroxyethyl)-DL-aspartamide (PHEA)] was used as a drug carrier. Three poly- (HEA)-NSAID adducts were studied: poly(HEA)-Alclofenac, poly(HEA)-Keto profen, and poly(HEA)-Ibuprofen. Prodrugs with different drug content were synthesized both as water-soluble and water-insoluble agents. Hydrolysis of water-soluble adducts in a simulated gastric juice was studied.

Renal Transplantation by Automatic Anastomotic Device in a Porcine Model

Automatic vascular staplers for vascular anastomoses in kidney transplantation may dramatically reduce the operative time and, in particular, warm ischemia time, thus increasing the outcome of transplantation. Ten pigs underwent kidney auto-transplantation by automatic anastomotic device. Kidneys were collected by laparotomy with selective ligations at the renal hilum and perfused with cold storage solution. To overcome the shortage in length of renal hilum, a tract of the internal jugular vein was harvested to increase the length of the vessels.
