Rheological and mechanical properties of biodegradable nanocomposites

2018

Polymer nanocomposites have gained huge interest over the last decade. However, traditional thermoplastic nanocomposites do not match the rising concern about environmental issues. Therefore, during the last years, the search for biodegradable polymer nanocomposites is gaining importance. Most of biobased (i.e. based on biodegradable/bioderived polymer matrices) nanocomposites have poly(lactic acid), PLA, as matrix. However, it is of clear interest to take into account also different biobased polymer matrices, such as MaterBi. In this work, we prepared bionanocomposites containing MaterBi or a PLA-based polymer matrix, with two different kinds of nanofillers (organomodified clay and nanosiz…

Data from: Microbiome symbionts and diet diversity incur costs on the immune system of insect larvae

2017

Communities of symbiotic microorganisms that colonize the gastrointestinal tract play an important role in food digestion and protection against opportunistic microbes. Diet diversity increases the number of symbionts in the intestines, a benefit that is considered to impose no cost for the host organism. However, less is known about the possible immunological investments that hosts have to make in order to control the infections caused by symbiont populations that increase due to diet diversity. By using taxonomical composition analysis of the 16S rRNA V3 region, we show that Enterococci are the dominating group of bacteria in the midgut of the larvae of the greater wax moth (Galleria mell…

No uniform associations between parasite prevalence and environmental nutrients

2014

The resource quality of the host has been shown to affect parasite transmission success, prevalence, and virulence. Seasonal availability of environmental nutrients alters density and stoichiometric quality (carbon–nutrient ratios) of both producers and consumers, suggesting that nutrient availability may drive fluctuations in parasite prevalence patterns observed in nature. We examined the interactions between the population dynamics of a keystone herbivore, Daphnia, and its parasites, and their associations with water nutrient concentrations, resource quantity and quality, and other environmental variables (temperature, pH, oxygen concentration) in a small lake, using general linear model…

In-process material characterization at constant extrusion conditions: application to clay/PLA bionanocomposites

2017

The authors developed a prototype modular small-scale single / twin-screw extrusion system, with outputs in the range of grams/hour, coupled to a rheo-optical slit die. This experimental set-up is adequate to measure shear viscosity and normal-stress differences and perform optical measurements

Molecular phylogeny and ultrastructure of the lichen microalga Asterochloris mediterranea sp. nov. from Mediterranean and Canary Islands ecosystems

2015

The microalgae of the genus Asterochloris are the preferential phycobionts in Cladonia, Lepraria and Stereocaulon lichens. Recent studies have highlighted the hidden diversity of the genus, even though phycobionts hosting Cladonia spp. in Mediterranean and Canarian ecosystems have been poorly explored. Phylogenetic analyses were made by concatenation of the sequences obtained with a plastid -LSU rDNA- and two nuclear -ITS rDNA and actin- molecular markers of the phycobionts living in several populations of Cladonia convoluta-C. foliacea complex, C. rangiformis and C. cervicornis species widely distributed in these areas in a great variety of substrata and habitats. A new strongly supported …

Assembly and functioning of endophytic bacterial communities in arcto-alpine pioneer plant Oxyria digyna

2019

Plant microbiomes consist of diverse communities of microorganisms, among which bacteria are highly abundant. The microbiomes are crucial for plants as they rely on their microbial associates for many essential functions. The goal of this thesis was to study the functional diversity and assembly rules of endophytic bacterial communities in different plant tissues of the arcto-alpine pioneer plant species, Oxyria digyna. I used high-throughput sequencing and bacterial isolations to characterize the endophytic communities in the leaves and roots of native O. digyna plants (wild plants) and micropropagated aseptic plants (bait plants) in the field. Wild plants and tissue-propagated bait plants…

Emergence of the epibiotic barnacle Xenobalanus globicipitis in Guiana dolphins after a morbillivirus outbreak in Sepetiba Bay, Brazil

2021

Abstract We report on the emergence of the epibiotic barnacle Xenobalanus globicipitis in Guiana dolphins (Sotalia guianensis) from Sepetiba Bay, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in September 2018, six months after a lethal morbillivirus epidemic. Small boat surveys were conducted at the entrance and in the interior of the bay from January 2018 to February 2021. Dolphins were photo-identified and classified according to overall spatial use of the Bay. We examined the potential influence of the period and habitat on the prevalence of X. globicipitis. The overall prevalence of the barnacle was 38.7% in 214 dolphins. X. globicipitis was not observed in 99 individually identified dolphins from January t…

Solving a Bloody Mess: B-Vitamin Independent Metabolic Convergence among Gammaproteobacterial Obligate Endosymbionts from Blood-Feeding Arthropods an…

2015

Endosymbiosis is a common phenomenon in nature, especially between bacteria and insects, whose typically unbalanced diets are usually complemented by their obligate endosymbionts. While much interest and focus has been directed toward phloem-feeders like aphids and mealybugs, blood-feeders such as the Lone star tick (Amblyomma americanum), Glossina flies, and the human body louse (Pediculus humanus corporis) depend on obligate endosymbionts which complement their B-vitamin-deficient diets, and thus are required for growth and survival. Glossiphoniid leeches have also been found to harbor distinct endosymbionts housed in specialized organs. Here, we present the genome of the bacterial endosy…
