Calculation of the pH and the titratable acidity in clinically used infusion solutions.

Clinically used infusion solutions are complex aqueous mixtures composed of a variety of different salts, acids, and non-electrolytes, and are characterized by composition, initial pH, and titratable acidity (TA). By rigorous treatment as a multi-composed acid-base system, pH and TA were calculated from proton dissociation equilibria, mass balance equations and electroneutrality condition. Little is known on the ability of different epithelia to release soluble TNF-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) and the relevance of TRAIL secretion by epithelial cells is still incompletely understood. On these bases, we have measured the concentration of soluble TRAIL by ELISA in the conjunctival sac fluid. It was the highest ever detected in a biological fluid (mean value of 26,800 pg/ml), being approximately 20-fold greater than that found in human saliva and >200-fold greater than that detected in human serum. Sample pretreatment techniques for oligopeptide analysis from natural sources

The analysis of oligopeptides in samples of food, tissues, and body fluids attracts considerable attention. The complexity of such samples requires efficient sample preparation (i.e., concentration and cleanup) procedures to remove interfering endogenous compounds and inorganic or organic salts. The methods of sample pretreatment that enable effective and selective isolation and/or preconcentration of oligopeptides from complex sample matrices have been reviewed. In each case, examples of application were presented and discussed, taking into account selectivity, enrichment, method automation, cleanup, and environmental aspects of the developed methods.

The biodegradable metals, including magnesium (Mg), are a convenient alternative to permanent metals but fast uncontrolled corrosion limited wide clinical application. Formation of a barrier coating on Mg alloys could be a successful strategy for the production of a stable external layer that prevents fast corrosion. A discoidal lipoprotein from the coelomic fluid of the polychaete Nereis virens.

A discoidal lipoprotein was isolated from the coelomic fluid of the polychaete, Nereis virens, by density gradient centrifugation. The lipoprotein was present in both sexes and moved as a uniform band in an agarose gel. The average diameter of the lipoprotein particles determined by electron microscopy was 42 nm with a thickness of 10 nm. SDS electrophoresis showed two apoprotein subunits with molecular masses of 247 and 85 kDa, respectively. In lectin blots, both apoproteins were reactive with Concanavalin A indicating the presence of N-glycans.
