High-resolution Raman spectroscopy of the ν1 region and Raman-Raman double resonance spectroscopy of the 2ν1-ν 1 band of 32SF6 and 34SF 6. Determinat…
2004
The ν1 region of 32SF6 and 34SF6 has been studied by stimulated Raman spectroscopy. For both isotopomers, a detailed analysis has been performed. Several hot bands (ν1+ν6-ν6, ν1+2ν 6-2ν6, ν1+ν5-ν 5) have been taken into account to calculate synthetic spectra that satisfactorily reproduce the experimental data. These results, together with the previous studies of the other fundamental bands have allowed us to determine the equilibrium bond length of sulfur hexafluoride as r e=1.5560(1) Å, in very good agreement with recent ab initio calculations. The 2ν1-ν1 band has also been studied for both isotopomers by Raman-Raman double resonance spectroscopy and the resulting spectra have been analyze…
A comparative study of Ag and Cu adhesion on an MgO(001) surface
2004
Abstract Ab initio calculations were performed on 2D slab models of copper and silver adhesion on a perfect MgO(001) surface using density functional theory (DFT) combined with the localized atomic wave functions, as implemented in both CRYSTAL-98 and CRYSTAL-03 computer codes. To clarify the nature of the interfacial bonding, we consider slab models of the Ag/MgO(001) and Cu/MgO(001) interfaces with six different substrate coverages, varied from 1 4 monolayer (ML) up to 2 ML. The dependence of several key interface properties on the substrate coverage is analyzed. For all coverages, the most favorable sites for the adsorption of metal atoms are found to be above the surface O 2− ions, wher…
Polymorphism in phase-change materials: melt-quenched and as-deposited amorphous structures in Ge2Sb2Te5from density functional calculations
2011
The as-deposited (AD) amorphous structure of the prototype phase change material Ge${}_{2}$Sb${}_{2}$Te${}_{5}$ (GST-225) has been studied by density functional calculations for a 648-atom sample generated by computer-aided deposition at 300 K. The AD sample differs from a melt-quenched (MQ) sample in essential ways: (1) Ge atoms are predominantly tetrahedrally coordinated, and (2) homopolar and Ge-Sb bonds are more common and reduce the number of $\mathit{ABAB}$ squares ($A=\mathrm{Ge}$, Sb; $B=\mathrm{Te}$), the characteristic building blocks of the material. The first observation resolves the contradiction between measured (EXAFS) and calculated Ge-Te bond lengths, and the latter explain…
DFT calculations of structures, 13C NMR chemical shifts and Raman RBM mode of simple models of ultra small diameter (4,0) zigzag hydroxylated single …
2012
Abstract Selected acenes, cyclic acenes and model zigzag (4,0) single wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) with one hydroxylic group at the open end were fully optimized at the B3LYP/6-31G* level of theory. The impact of molecule size on the B3LYP/pcS-2 calculated 13 C NMR chemical shifts was studied to characterize pristine and tip-monofunctionalized ultra narrow SWCNTs. The harmonic frequency of Raman radial breathing mode (RBM) was determined for monohydroxylated cyclic acenes and correlated with their diameter. A regular convergence of selected CC bond lengths, RBM frequency and carbon chemical shifts upon increasing the size of the systems was observed and fitted toward very large systems wi…
<title>Quantum chemical simulation of silicon nanostructures</title>
1999
The point defects in silicon, their migration, geometry and electronic structure, as well as some models for nanowires, were studied. The ab initio Self Consistent Field Molecular Orbital method and the molecular cluster model were used. Hydrogen pseudoatoms were used to saturate dangling bonds of the cluster. The influence of the compression onto defect structure and properties was simulated by changing the bond length value. The silicon interstitial migration activation energy, calculated as the difference between the total energies of the cluster with interstitial in tetrahedral and hexagonal positions, is 4.21 eV, and it does not depend on local pressure. The influence of high pressure …
Local Bonding Influence on the Band Edge and Band Gap Formation in Quaternary Chalcopyrites
2017
Quaternary chalcopyrites have shown to exhibit tunable band gaps with changing anion composition. Inspired by these observations, the underlying structural and electronic considerations are investigated using a combination of experimentally obtained structural data, molecular orbital considerations, and density functional theory. Within the solid solution Cu2ZnGeS4-x Se x , the anion bond alteration parameter changes, showing larger bond lengths for metal-selenium than for metal-sulfur bonds. The changing bonding interaction directly influences the valence and conduction band edges, which result from antibonding Cu-anion and Ge-anion interactions, respectively. The knowledge of the underlyi…
Magneto-structural diversity of Co(ii) compounds with 1-benzylimidazole induced by linear pseudohalide coligands
2020
We report the preparation, spectroscopic characterisation, crystal structure determination and cryomagnetic investigation of three cobalt(II) complexes of formula trans-[Co(bim)4(NCS)2] (1), [Co(bim)2(NCO)2] (2) and [Co(bim)2(N3)2]n (3) (bim = 1-benzylimidazole). The structure of 1 is made up of neutral [Co(bim)4(NCS)2] mononuclear units, where the cobalt(II) ion is six-coordinate with four monodentate bim ligands in equatorial positions and two N-thiocyanato groups in the axial sites building a slightly compressed octahedron. In contrast to 1, each cobalt(II) ion in 2 is four-coordinate with two imidazole-nitrogen atoms from two bim molecules and two N-cyanato ligands describing a slightly…
Atlas for the properties of elemental two-dimensional metals
2018
Common two-dimensional (2D) materials have a layered three-dimensional (3D) structure with covalently bonded, atomically thin layers held together by weak van der Waals forces. However, in a recent transmission electron microscopy experiment, atomically thin 2D patches of iron were discovered inside a graphene nanopore. Motivated by this discovery, we perform a systematic density-functional study on atomically thin elemental 2D metal films, using 45 metals in three lattice structures. Cohesive energies, equilibrium distances, and bulk moduli in 2D are found to be linearly correlated to the corresponding 3D bulk properties, enabling the quick estimation of these values for a given 2D metal a…
Crystal structure of lactitol (4-O-beta-D-galactopyranosyl-D-glucitol) dihydrate.
1992
Abstract Lactitol dihydrate, C 12 H 24 O 11 ·2H 2 O, is tetragonal, space group P 4 3 2 1 2 with cell dimensions a and b = 8.762(1), c = 45.500(3) A, and V = 3493.2(3) A 3 ; Z = 8, D x = 1.45 Mg.m −3 , λ(Cu- K α ) = 1.54056 A, μ = 1.108 mm −1 , F (000) = 1632, and T = 23°. The structure was solved by direct methods and refined by least-squares calculations to R = 0.054 for 2037 unique observed reflections. There are three intra- and twelve inter-molecular hydrogen bonds in the structure. Bond lengths and angles accord quite well with the mean values of related structures. The galactopyranosyl ring has a chair of conformation.
Asymmetry and Non-Adiabaticity in Fragmentation of Disulfide Bonds upon Electron Capture
2010
Although it has been generally assumed that electron attachment to disulfide derivatives leads to a systematic and significant activation of the S-S bond, we show, by using [CH(3)SSX] (X = CH(3), NH(2), OH, F) derivatives as model compounds, that this is the case only when the X substituents have low electronegativity. Through the use of MP2, QCI and CASPT2 molecular orbital (MO) methods, we elucidate, for the first time, the mechanisms that lead to unimolecular fragmentation of disulfide derivatives after electron attachment. Our theoretical scrutiny indicates that these mechanisms are more intricate than assumed in previous studies. The most stable products, from a thermodynamic viewpoint…
