Carbohydrates in plant immunity and plant protection: roles and potential application as foliar sprays.

International audience; Increasing interest is devoted to carbohydrates for their roles in plant immunity. Some of them are elicitors of plant defenses whereas other ones act as signaling molecules in a manner similar to phytohormones. This review first describes the main classes of carbohydrates associated to plant immunity, their role and mode of action. More precisely, the state of the art about perception of "PAMP, MAMP, and DAMP (Pathogen-, Microbe-, Damage-Associated Molecular Patterns) type" oligosaccharides is presented and examples of induced defense events are provided. Chemical composition and antimicrobial activity of the essential oil ofPhlomis ferruginea Ten. (Lamiaceae) growing wild in Southern Italy

The essential oil of aerial parts of Phlomis ferruginea (Lamiaceae), growing wild in Southern Italy, was obtained by hydrodistillation and analysed by GC and GC–MS. 60 compounds, representing 92.3% of the oil, were identified. The major components were β-caryophyllene (15.6%), hexadecanoic acid (12.8%), germacrene D (8.9%), caryophyllene oxide (6.7%) and α-thujone (5.5%). Factors controlling adventitious bud induction and plant regeneration in matureJuniperus oxycedrus leaves cultured in vitro

The morphogenetic capacity of matureJuniperus oxycedrus L. leaves cultured in vitro has been studied, noting nutritive, hormonal, and environmental factors inducing differentiation and development of adventitious shoots. Bud primordia formed directly from the leaves. Highest bud differentiation rates were obtained when the explants were cultured for at least 21 days on a modified Schenk and Hildebrandt solidified medium containing 0.5 μM benzyladenine under a 16-h photoperiod. Effect of growth regulators onin vitro propagation ofFicus benjamina cv. Exotica

Stem internodes with axillary buds were excised from 5-year old trees ofFicus benjamina cv. Exotica. The effect of 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP), gibberellic acid (GA3), indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA), and 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) on shoot growth and proliferationin vitro was investigated. Multiple shoots were developed after 3–4 weeks from stem internodes with axillary buds incubated in Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with phloroglucinol (PG) and BAP. Novel Tetramethoxy Resorcinarene Bis-Crown Ethers

The synthesis and characterization of new tetramethoxy resorcinarene bis-crown ethers BC4 and BC5 are described. The complexation properties of the compounds toward alkali metal cations were studied by 1H NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography, which revealed that BC5 can accommodate two cations simultaneously inside the crown pockets formed by the crown ether bridges and the resorcinarene skeleton. The ambiguous role of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid in wheat tissue culture

The very basal, highly immature regions of dissected young leaves of Triticum aestivum L. cv. Kite formed adventitious roots on a nutrient medium supplemented with comparatively low concentrations (0.16 to 0.63 μM) of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D). Higher concentrations (up to 640 μM) had to be applied to stimulate growth from more mature regions higher up the leaf. Yet, already at 2.5 μM roots were less distinct and more callus-like, and eventually (at 10 to 640 μM) only a subculturable callus of apparently suppressed, slowly proliferating root primordia developed. In vitro propagation ofSalix tarraconensis Pau ex Font Quer, an endemic and threatened plant

Salix tarraconensis Pau ex Font Quer, an endemic willow species from northeast Spain, was micropropagated with nodal segments. Shoot multiplication was obtained with different cytokinins, either on Murashige and Skoog medium or woody plant medium. Best results for shoot formation were obtained on Murashige and Skoog medium containing 4.9 μM of 6-γ-γ-dimethylallylaminopurine. Shoots showed strong apical dominance, and some cultures displayed apical necrosis. Benzyladenine gave the worst results; shoots displayed very slow growth, deformed leaves, and hyperhydrity. Water-soluble polysaccharides from Opuntia stricta Haw. fruit peels: Recovery, identification and evaluation of their antioxidant activities

Abstract Opuntia stricta Haw. is considered as one of the most common cactus plant growing in Tunisia. Extracting valuable compounds from its fruit peel, considered as by-product, is drawing more and more attention, making it on the verge of commercialization. Water-soluble polysaccharides were extracted from Opuntia stricta Haw. peels, and their chemical composition assessed using thin layer chromatography. The antioxidant activities of the extracted polysaccharides were assessed using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl free radical scavenging activity, total antioxidant activity and reducing power capacity. The free amino acid content in needles of Norway spruce trees (about 45-year-old) was determined by means of HPLC. The studied trees have been growing at a forestry site in the Black Forest which is characterized by a high impact of ozone and magnesium deficiency. Measurements were carried out on visibly healthy and on damaged trees on several dates during two vegetation periods and during the course of a day. The amino acids occurring at the highest concentrations were glutamate, arginine, aspartate, and glutamine. Seasonal-variation of nitrogenous compounds in the xylem sap of citrus

Samples of tracheal sap of Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck cv. Washington Navel were taken from field trees throughout the year and the nitrogen composition of the sap was determined. The nitrogenous fraction of the sap was composed mainly of free amino acids (92–97% of total nitrogen) and nitrates throughout the year. Proline was the most abundant amino acid during almost the entire cycle, and its concentration was especially high during the autumn and winter period.
