Effect of Pseudomonas sp. MT5 baths on Flavobacterium columnare infection of rainbow trout and on microbial diversity on fish skin and gills

Use of Pseudomonas sp. strain MT5 to prevent and treat Flavobacterium columnare infection was studied in 2 experiments with fingerling rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss. In the first experiment, length heterogeneity analysis of PCR-amplified DNA fragments (LH-PCR) was used to assess the effect of antagonistic baths on the microbial diversity of healthy and experimentally infected fish. In the 148 samples studied, no difference was found between bathed and unbathed fish, and 3 fragment lengths were detected most frequently: 500 (in 75.7% of the samples), 523 (62.2%) and 517 bp (40.5%). Increased intestinal permeability is a likely cause of various pathologies, such as allergies and metabolic or even cardiovascular disturbances. Intestinal permeability is found in many severe clinical situations and in common disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome. In these conditions, substances that are normally unable to cross the epithelial barrier gain access to the systemic circulation. Two independent studies by Rakoff-Nahoum et al. (2006) and Uhlig et al. (2006) in this issue of Immunity have illuminated a unique pathogenic role of innate immunity via Toll-like receptor and interleukin-23 signaling, respectively, in intestinal inflammation. These data define new roads to gut inflammation and future avenues for therapy.

Piece te nazywane piekarniokami, piekarokami służyły przede wszystkim mieszkańcom do wypieku chleba i kołaczy drożdżowych. W okresie powojennym (od lat 50.) w związku z przemianami cywilizacyjnymi – pozbawione opieki i ochrony – zaczęły znikać ze śląskiego krajobrazu. Ileus following spontaneous jejunum intramural hematoma: case report and review of the literature.

Anticoagulant therapy may cause the onset of a spontaneous intramural hema- toma of the small bowel, in the jejunum, ileum or duodenum. A 53-year-old woman on therapy with heparin for previous pulmonary embolism was admitted for abdominal pain and vomit. Computed tomography scan visualized an intramural hematoma of the jejunum causing subtotal obstruction of the intestinal lumen. The patient underwent resection of a part of the jejunum, securing intestinal continuity by a mechanical side-to-side anastomosis.
