Power monitoring in dielectric-loaded plasmonic waveguides with internal Wheatstone bridges
2013
We report on monitoring the mode power in dielectric-loaded surface plasmon polariton waveguides (DLSPPWs) by measuring the resistance of gold electrodes, supporting the DLSPPW mode propagation, with internal (on-chip) Wheatstone bridges. The investigated DLSPPW configuration consisted of 1-μm-thick and 10-μm-wide cycloaliphatic acrylate polymer ridges tapered laterally to a 1-μm-wide ridge placed on a 50-nm-thin and 4-um wide gold stripe, all supported by a ~1.7-µm-thick Cytop layer deposited on a Si wafer. The fabricated DLSPPW power monitors were characterized at telecom wavelengths, showing very high responsivities reaching up to ~6.4 μV/μW (for a bias voltage of 245 mV) and the operati…
GMR Based Sensors for IC Current Monitoring
2013
The Giant MagnetoResistance (GMR) effect is a magnetic coupling mechanism that can be obtained in multilayer structures of few nanometers thick. In these devices, and at room temperature, the resistance is a function of the external magnetic field, at optimal levels for being used as sensors. Since the GMR effect was reported, scientists and engineers have dedicated their effort to this topic. This way, after two decades, a a very good knowledge of the GMR underlying physics together with notable designs of GMR based devices are nowadays available. They were initially used in the read heads of hard drives, but the constant evolution that this technology has experienced has open new fields o…
Comportamento di una passerella pedonale strallata nei confronti delle azioni del vento
2007
The wind behaviour of a stayed footbridge has been analyzed. In order to avoid aeroelastic phenomena, an experimental campaign on a 1:15 scale model has been realized at the boundary-layer wind-tunnel of the Milan Polytechnic. The aerodynamic characterization of the structure has allowed to direct the project towards the choice of non-solid barriers, but with a medium porosity, by avoiding possible problems that can lead to ultimate limit state condi-tions of the structure (e.g., flutter or vortex shedding). In this way the quantitative effect of barriers has been estimated deducing reliable values not only for the alongwind forces, but also for the crosswind and torsional actions.
Implications of the Modular Curriculum in the Senior Secondary School in Finland
2004
Interest in the modular curriculum has increased during the last few years. The modular approach has been seen as a promising curriculum model when more flexible structures are sought for reorganizing education. It creates alternatives for organizing school work in a pedagogically functional way in which individual students are offered more opportunities to select their own program of study (Warwick, 1988). Co-operation with schools has increased and forced schools to find common principles to arrange the timetables and daily schoolwork. In this context, the modular curriculum provides an instrument to outline the purpose and goals of schoolwork in a new way, and put them into practice at t…

Conceptual design of bowstring bridges with steel-concrete composite deck
2019
The behaviour of tied-arch (bowstring) bridges is very sensitive to the conceptual design of arch and deck. The geometry of the arch shape and the arch-tie joint as well as the construction sequence can modify the global behaviour. When the arch geometry moves away from the anti-funicular shape, bending moments appear in the arch and in the deck even for dead loads; additional bending moments can increase the total value of tension in the deck becoming critical for a composite deck because of possible cracking of the upper concrete slab. The conceptual design of tied arches with composite deck is presented here, in order to reduce the danger of concrete slab cracking and the amount of reinf…
REINSTATEMENT OF THE DINOFLAGELLATE GENUS Tripos TO REPLACE Neoceratium, MARINE SPECIES OF Ceratium (DINOPHYCEAE, ALVEOLATA)
2013
Morphological and molecular data support the split at the genus level of the marine and freshwater species of the dinoflagellate Ceratium (Gonyaulacales, Dinophyceae). A new genus name Neoceratium F. Gomez, D. Moreira & P. Lopez-Garcia was proposed for the marine species. However, it is considered illegitimate (type species is type of Biceratium Vanhoffen), and the nomenclatural priority is here given for the genus Tripos Bory (type species Tripos muelleri ) which replaces Neoceratium . New combinations are proposed for the existing names of species and infraspecific taxa. Reinstalacion del genero de dinoflagelados Tripos para reemplazar a Neoceratium , especies marinas de Ceratium (Dinophy…
The BioS4You European project: An innovative way to effectively engage Z-generation students in STEM disciplines
2021
In this contribution, we present the BioS4You project and analyse the results obtained in the first 18 months of its activity. The “Bio-Inspired STEM topics for engaging young generations” (BioS4You) Erasmus+ KA2 Innovation project aims to bridge the gap between STEM national curricula (which include Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and the needs of Z-generation students, uninterested to basic themes, but enthusiastic in issues related to environmental, social, and health concerns. The BioS4You project engages young learners in STEM subjects, starting with current issues of interest for them, as the social and environmental impact of new technologies, connecting STEM conce…
Examining Bridge Employment From a Self-employment Perspective : Evidence From the Health and Retirement Study
2017
This study examines bridge employment decision-making from a self-employment perspective using 3 prominent retirement theories, the life course perspective, continuity theory and role theory. Focusing on self-employment extends the current theoretical understanding of bridge employment and offers interesting implications for retirement policy-making. Specifically, using longitudinal data from the Health and Retirement Study (n = 2,080), we conducted multinomial regression analysis to examine who were more/less likely to fully retire, enter bridge employment in the wage-and-salary form, or enter bridge employment in the self-employment form. Furthermore, we examined the role of pre-retiremen…
