2009

From the day when Theseus killed the Minotaur, the Maze turned into a form in search of meaning, and became useless. As a result, one was enjoined to ascribe nw meanings to the empty strcuture. Modern writers, when confronted with such a void, will have explored all its possibilities: while some of them, like Michel Butor, dismiss the sacred dimensions, others, like Serge Doubrovsky, see in it the image of the self (the body, the psyche...), and others still, like Raymond Roussel, Alain Robbe-Grillet or Georges Pererc, make of the pure geometrical structure of the labyrinth an aesthetic model, and thus a mirror of the work of art. However, one still have to ask whether the labrinth is a val…

Genetic evolution of T-cell resistance in the course of melanoma progression

2014

Abstract Purpose: CD8+ T lymphocytes can kill autologous melanoma cells, but their activity is impaired when poorly immunogenic tumor phenotypes evolve in the course of disease progression. Here, we analyzed three consecutive melanoma lesions obtained within one year of developing stage IV disease for their recognition by autologous T cells. Experimental Design: One skin (Ma-Mel-48a) and two lymph node (Ma-Mel-48b, Ma-Mel-48c) metastases were analyzed for T-cell infiltration. Melanoma cell lines established from the respective lesions were characterized, determining the T-cell–stimulatory capacity, expression of surface molecules involved in T-cell activation, and specific genetic alteratio…

A quantitative assessment of the effect of distributor type on particle circulation

1997

Abstract Garncarek's quantitative index of inhomogeneity has been used to compare the effect of distributor type on the degree of uniformity of solids mixing in a gas-fluidized bed assessed by following a tracer particle using the technique of Positron Emission Particle Tracking. The bed was a sand of 475 μm diameter fluidized at 2 U mf and contained within a column of 150 mm diameter. A porous and perforated plate distributor are compared. The index shows that tracer locations are generally more homogeneously distributed throughout the vertical section of the bed with the porous plate distributor. Behaviour varies with height and horizontal sections of the bed show that there is little dif…

Management of Distribution Risks and Digital Transformation of Insurance Distribution—A Regulatory Gap in the IDD

2021

The Insurance Distribution Directive (IDD) aims to regulate insurance distribution in the EU regardless of distribution channels and means. Although new technologies affect insurance distribution, the IDD does not explicitly regulate this digital transformation. Insurers and intermediaries must comply with detailed business conduct rules that aim to counteract distribution risks. However, the IDD exempts ancillary insurance intermediaries from its scope when they meet certain conditions. The article highlights the regulatory framework on insurance, requiring insurers and intermediaries to address distribution risks, and analyses how this exemption affects the management of distribution risk…

Market orientation, trust and satisfaction in dyadic relationships:a manufacturer‐retailer analysis

2003

This paper studies the relationships between the manufacturer's market orientation behaviours and the distributor's trust in the relationship and satisfaction with it. It also analyses the effect of the distributor's trust on his/her satisfaction. Following a review of the literature, three alternative models of relationships between trust and satisfaction are compared. For this purpose the article presents the results of a study of the Spanish ceramic industry. These establish that the effect of the manufacturer's market orientation on the distributor's trust and on its satisfaction with the relationship is different depending on which dimension is considered. The model that best fits the …

The effect of market orientation on dependence and satisfaction in dyadic relationships

2005

Purpose – This paper seeks to examines the effect of manufacturer market orientation on distributor dependence and satisfaction with the relationship, and to analyse how this dependence affects distributor satisfaction, with specific reference to the Spanish ceramic tile industry,Design/methodology/approach – Two parallel sets of individual interviews with a total of 222 manufacturers and distributors were conducted by a private research institute. They yielded 179 dyads of interaction. Market orientation, dependence and satisfaction were measured by five‐point Likert scales. The data were used to test 11 hypotheses by structural equation modelling.Findings – Analysis of the findings sugges…

Market orientation: an antecedent to the industrial manufacturer's power

2004

This study looks at the relationships between the market orientation of the manufacturer and the sources of his or her power over the distributor. The effect these power bases have on the distributor's satisfaction with the relationship is also analysed. The aricle offers the results of a study, conducted in the ceramic tile sector in Spain, aimed at measuring the market orientation of manufacturers, their power bases as perceived by their distributors, and the latter's satisfaction with the relationship. The results show that manufacturers' market orientation has a positive effect on their reward power but not on their referent power, nor on their power of coercion. However, the reward, ex…
