New molecular targets in bone metastases.

2010

Bone metastases have a major impact on morbidity and on mortality in cancer patients. Despite its clinical relevance, metastasis remains the most poorly elucidated aspect of carcinogenesis. The biological mechanisms leading to bone metastasis establishment have been referred as " vicious circle," a complex network between cancer cells and the bone microenvironment. This review is aimed to underline the new molecular targets in bone metastases management other than bisphosphonates. Different pathways or molecules such as RANK/RANKL/OPG, cathepsin K, endothelin-1, Wnt/DKK1, Src have recently emerged as potential targets and nowadays preclinical and clinical trials are underway. The results fr…

Comparison of the effect of non-polluted and underwater-volcano-polluted seawater on the corrosion resistance of different stainless steels

2015

This work compares the effect of non‐polluted and underwater‐volcano‐polluted seawater on the electrochemical behavior of two different alloys, notably an austenitic stainless steel (SS) and a duplex stainless steel. Polarization measurements, potentiostatic passivation tests, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and capacitance measurements were performed. Results show that the composition of the polluted seawater negatively affects the passivation kinetics of both AISI 316 SS and Alloy 900, decreasing the corrosion resistance of both alloys. Additionally, when both steels are compared, it can be concluded that passive films formed on Alloy 900 presented better protective properties than…

Influence of health literacy on maintenance of exclusive breastfeeding at 6 months postpartum: a multicentre study

2022

Data Availability Statement: Please note that the database is in an open repository. You can access the data through this link: http://hdl.handle.net/10234/196606 (accessed on 20 February 2022). Copyright © 2022 by the authors. Background: International organizations recommend initiating breastfeeding within the first hour of life and maintaining exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months. However, worldwide rates of exclusive breastfeeding for 6-month-old infants is far from meeting the goal proposed by the World Health Organization, which is to reach a minimum of 50% of infants. Education is one of the factors affecting the initiation and continuation of breastfeeding, and incidentall…

The rates of adult neurogenesis and oligodendrogenesis are linked to cell cycle regulation through p27-dependent gene repression of SOX2

2023

Abstract Cell differentiation involves profound changes in global gene expression that often have to occur in coordination with cell cycle exit. Because cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor p27 reportedly regulates proliferation of neural progenitor cells in the subependymal neurogenic niche of the adult mouse brain, but can also have effects on gene expression, we decided to molecularly analyze its role in adult neurogenesis and oligodendrogenesis. At the cell level, we show that p27 restricts residual cyclin-dependent kinase activity after mitogen withdrawal to antagonize cycling, but it is not essential for cell cycle exit. By integrating genome-wide gene expression and chromatin accessibil…

Spin crossover star-shaped metallomesogens of iron(II).

2014

Three new types of spin crossover (SCO) metallomesogens of Fe-II based on symmetric tripod ligands and their magnetic and structural properties are reported here. These were obtained by condensation of tris(2-aminoethyl)-amin (tren) with the aldehyde derived from 3-alkoxy-6-methylpyridine (mpyN, N (number of carbon atoms in n-alkyl chains) = 8, 18), 1-alkyl-1H-imidazole (imN, N = 4, 16, 18, 20, 22), or 1-alkyl-1H-benzimidazole (bimN, N = 6, 14, 16, 18, 20). A complex derived from 1-octadecyl-1H-naphtho[2,3-d]imidazole (nim18) retains the high spin state at any temperature. Single crystals of the short-chain complexes were investigated by a combination of X-ray crystallography, magnetic meas…

Accessing the fundamentals of magnetotransport in metals with terahertz probes

2015

Spin-dependent conduction in metals underlies all modern magnetic memory technologies, such as giant magnetoresistance (GMR). The charge current in ferromagnetic transition metals is carried by two non-mixing populations of sp-band Fermi-level electrons: one of majority-spin and one of minority-spin. These electrons experience spin-dependent momentum scattering with localized electrons, which originate from the spin-split d-band. The direct observation of magnetotransport under such fundamental conditions, however, requires magnetotransport measurements on the same timescale as the electron momentum scattering, which takes place in the sub-100 fs regime. Using terahertz electromagnetic prob…

Spin instabilities of infinite nuclear matter and effective tensor interactions

2013

We study the effects of the tensor force, present in modern effective nucleon-nucleon interactions, in the spin instability of nuclear and neutron matter. Stability conditions of the system against certain very low energy excitation modes are expressed in terms of Landau parameters. It is shown that in the spin case, the stability conditions are equivalent to the condition derived from the spin susceptibility, which is obtained as the zero-frequency and long-wavelength limit of the spin response function calculated in the random phase approximation. Zero-range forces of the Skyrme type and finite-range forces of M3Y and Gogny type are analyzed. It is shown that for the Skyrme forces conside…
