Shape coexistence in Au 187 studied by laser spectroscopy

Hyperfine-structure parameters and isotope shift of the 9/2$^−$ isomeric state in $^{187}$Au relative to $^{197}$Au for the 267.6-nm atomic transition have been measured for the first time using the in-source resonance-ionization spectroscopy technique. The magnetic dipole moment and change in the mean-square charge radius for this 9/2$^−$ isomer have been deduced. The observed large isomer shift relative to the 1/2$^+$ ground state in $^{187}$Au confirms the occurrence of the shape coexistence in $^{187}$Au proposed earlier from the analysis of the nuclear spectroscopic data and particle plus triaxial rotor calculations. Nuclear orientation of radon isotopes by spin exchange optical pumping

This paper reports the first demonstration of nuclear orientation of radon atoms. The method employed was spin exchange with potassium atoms polarized by optical pumping. The radon isotopes were produced at the ISOLDE isotope separator of CERN. The nuclear alignment of /sup 209/Rn and /sup 223/Rn has been measured by observation of ..gamma..-ray anisotropies and the magnetic dipole moment for /sup 209/Rn has been measured by the nuclear-magnetic-resonance method to be chemically bond..mu..chemically bond = 0.838 81(39)..mu../sub N/.
Alignment-orientation transition at optical excitation of molecules in magnetic field

Abstract Angular momentum alignment-orientation transition is analyzed for the ground state of diatomic or linear molecules subjected to the dynamic Stark effect. Analytical expressions are derived for the orientation value. It is shown that, first, orientation of angular momenta resulting from the action of the dynamic Stark effect is a nonlinear process which depends quadratically on the intensity of the irradiating light; second, it is a quantum effect and disappears for the states with large angular momenta; and, third, it occurs only in the presence of an external magnetic field.
Highly charged ions, quantum-electrodynamics, and the electron mass

Abstract High precision experiments on the magnetic moment of hydrogen-like ions confined in a Penning trap have provided the most stringent test of bound-state quantum-electrodynamic calculations. Experiments have been performed on single C 5+ and O 7+ ions. These experiments are briefly reviewed and prospects for future improvements and extension to other systems are discussed.
Precision Measurement ofLi11Moments: Influence of Halo Neutrons on theLi9Core

The electric quadrupole moment and the magnetic moment of the 11Li halo nucleus have been measured with more than an order of magnitude higher precision than before, |Q| = 33.3(5) mb and mu = +3.6712(3)muN, revealing a 8.8(1.5)% increase of the quadrupole moment relative to that of 9Li. This result is compared to various models that aim at describing the halo properties. In the shell model an increased quadrupole moment points to a significant occupation of the 1d orbits, whereas in a simple halo picture this can be explained by relating the quadrupole moments of the proton distribution to the charge radii. Nuclear Magnetic Moment ofTl207

The magnetic moment 1.876(5)${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\mu}}}_{\mathit{N}}$ of 4.77-min $^{207}\mathrm{Tl}$, the only heavy nucleus with a doubly magic core plus a single ${s}_{\frac{1}{2}}$ particle or hole, was measured from the hfs by collinear fast-beam laser spectroscopy at ISOLDE (isotope separator at the CERN synchrotron). The result is of theoretical importance as a test case for core polarization since the nuclear structure is relatively simple and the orbital part of the magnetic moment, including strong pion-exchange contribution, is expected to be zero.

In the preceding chapter we constructed and discussed the simplest possible nuclear wave functions. This construction was done at the mean-field level. No account was taken of configuration mixing caused by the nuclear residual interaction. These simple wave functions produce degeneracies in energy spectra. This is contrary to experimental data, so improved wave functions are called for.
Modulated magnetic structures of ErPb3, HoPb3, ErTl3 and HoTl3

Neutron diffraction experiments have been carried out on the magnetically ordered phases of ErPb3, HoPb3, ErTl3 and HoTl3. The magnetic moments were found to be sinusoidally modulated with a propagation vector of (0, 0.2, 0.5) for the Pb-compounds and (0.38, 0.38, 0.16) for the Tl-compounds.
First observation of the ground-state hyperfine transition in 209Bi80+

The long sought after ground-state hyperfine transition in lithium-like bismuth 209Bi80+ was observed for the first time using laser spectroscopy on relativistic ions in the experimental storage ring at the GSI Helmholtz Centre in Darmstadt. Combined with the transition in the corresponding hydrogen-like ion 209Bi82+, it will allow extraction of the specific difference between the two transitions that is unaffected by the magnetic moment distribution in the nucleus and can therefore provide a better test of bound-state QED in extremely strong magnetic fields.
Electrong-factor determinations in Penning traps

The magnetic moment of the electron, expressed by the g-factor in units of the Bohr magneton, is a key quantity in the theory of quantum electrodynamics (QED). Experiments using single particles confined in Penning traps have provided very precise values of the g-factor for the free electron as well as the electron bound in hydrogen-like ions. In this paper the status of these experiments is reviewed. The results allow testing calculations of higher order Feynman diagrams. Comparison of experimental and theoretical results for free and bound particles show no discrepancy within the limits of error, thus representing to date the most sensitive test of QED.
