A non-resonant dark-side solution to the solar neutrino problem

2001

We re-analyse spin-flavour precession solutions to the solar neutrino problem in the light of the recent SNO CC result as well as the 1258--day Super-Kamiokande data and the upper limit on solar anti-neutrinos. In a self-consistent magneto-hydrodynamics approach the resulting scheme has only 3 effective parameters: $\Delta m^2$, $\mu B_\perp$ and the neutrino mixing angle $\theta$. We show how a rates-only analysis for fixed $\mu B_\perp$ slightly favours spin-flavour precession (SFP) solutions over oscillations (OSC). In addition to the resonant solution (RSFP for short), there is a new non-resonant solution (NRSFP) in the ``dark-side''. Both RSFP and NRSFP lead to flat recoil energy spect…

One-Particle Measurement of the Antiproton Magnetic Moment

The 4.4 parts per million (ppm) uncertainty is 680 times smaller than previously realized. Comparing to the proton moment measured using…

New Supernova Constraints on active-sterile neutrino conversions

1994

We consider active-sterile neutrino conversions in a supernova in the presence of random magnetic field domains. For large enough fields the magnetization of the medium may enhance the active to sterile neutrino conversion rates. Neglecting neutrino transition magnetic moments we show that for KeV neutrino mass squared differences these limits may overcome those that would apply in the isotropic case.

Nuclear Spins and Magnetic Moments ofCu71,73,75: Inversion ofπ2p3/2andπ1f5/2Levels inCu75

2009

We report the first confirmation of the predicted inversion between the pi2p3/2 and pi1f5/2 nuclear states in the nu(g)9/2 midshell. This was achieved at the ISOLDE facility, by using a combination of in-source laser spectroscopy and collinear laser spectroscopy on the ground states of 71,73,75Cu, which measured the nuclear spin and magnetic moments. The obtained values are mu(71Cu)=+2.2747(8)mu(N), mu(73Cu)=+1.7426(8)mu(N), and mu(75Cu)=+1.0062(13)mu(N) corresponding to spins I=3/2 for 71,73Cu and I=5/2 for 75Cu. The results are in fair agreement with large-scale shell-model calculations.

Anisotropic exchange in ErSb

1983

The correlations of the magnetic moments and the magnetic order parameter of ErSb have been studied by neutron diffraction. The antiferromagnetic phase transition is of first order. The diffuse paramagnetic scattering is evaluated in terms of magnetic coupling tensors which are characterized by a strong two-ion anisotropy.

Alkali-vapor magnetic resonance driven by fictitious radiofrequency fields

2014

We demonstrate an all-optical 133Cs scalar magnetometer, operating in nonzero magnetic field, in which the magnetic resonance is driven by an effective oscillating magnetic field provided by the AC Stark shift of an intensity-modulated laser beam. We achieve a projected shot-noise-limited sensitivity of 1.7fT/Hz and measure a technical noise floor of 40fT/Hz. These results are essentially identical to a coil-driven scalar magnetometer using the same setup. This all-optical scheme offers advantages over traditional coil-driven magnetometers for use in arrays and in magnetically sensitive fundamental physics experiments, e.g., searches for a permanent electric dipole moment of the neutron.

Spin and Orbital Magnetic Moments of FePt Thin Films

2006

The magnetic moments of disordered and ordered L10 Fe50Pt50 films were investigated using magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) and spin polarized full relativistic Korringa–Kohn–Rostoker (SPRKKR) calculations. The measurements showed that the spin magnetic moments of Fe in both ordered and disordered films were similar with a lower value than that obtained by SPRKKR calculations. Both films however showed larger orbital moments of Fe compared to the calculations. It is suggested that the spin magnetic moment of Fe in FePt thin films was insensitive to L10 ordering.

Computing the nucleon Dirac radius directly at $Q^2=0$

2016

We describe a lattice approach for directly computing momentum derivatives of nucleon matrix elements using the Rome method, which we apply to obtain the isovector magnetic moment and Dirac radius. We present preliminary results calculated at the physical pion mass using a 2HEX-smeared Wilson-clover action. For removing the effects of excited-state contamination, the calculations were done at three source-sink separations and the summation method was used.

Resolution of Single Spin Flips of a Single Proton

2013

The spin magnetic moment of a single proton in a cryogenic Penning trap was coupled to the particle's axial motion with a superimposed magnetic bottle. Jumps in the oscillation frequency indicate spin-flips and were identified using a Bayesian analysis.

Observation of Spin Flips with a Single Trapped Proton

2011

Radio-frequency induced spin transitions of one individual proton are observed for the first time. The spin quantum jumps are detected via the continuous Stern-Gerlach effect, which is used in an experiment with a single proton stored in a cryogenic Penning trap. This is an important milestone towards a direct high-precision measurement of the magnetic moment of the proton and a new test of the matter-antimatter symmetry in the baryon sector.
