The role of career adaptability resources in dual career pathways: A person-oriented longitudinal study across elite sports upper secondary school
2023
Objectives Obtaining education is an important milestone in athletes’ preparation for their professional career after sport. Literature indicates that combining school and sport is not an easy task for many aspiring youth athletes. It has been proposed that career adaptability, which refers to psychosocial resources enabling individuals to solve complex occupational transitions, present and anticipated vocational development tasks, and career related challenges could be a relevant concept for applied work with student-athletes. In this study, we examined whether there are distinct developmental profiles of career adaptability among adolescent athletes across the upper secondary school years…
The interplay between maternal homework involvement, task-avoidance, and achievement among adolescents.
2021
This study examined three aspects of maternal homework involvement (i.e., the quantity, quality, and source of initiative) and their direct and indirect associations with adolescents’ task-avoidant behavior in homework situations and academic achievement. The sample consisted of Finnish mothers and their adolescents who were transitioning from primary to lower secondary school. Mothers rated the quantity of their homework involvement (i.e., monitoring and help), quality of their homework involvement (i.e., autonomy support and psychological control), and source of initiative (i.e., mother- vs. adolescent-initiated monitoring and help) at the beginning of Grade 6. They also reported on adole…

Student Engagement and School Burnout in Finnish Lower-Secondary Schools: Latent Profile Analysis
2016
Self-ratings of behavioural engagement, cognitive engagement and school burnout were used in person-centred analyses to identify latent profiles among 2,485 Finnish lower-secondary school students. Three profiles were identified: high-engagement/low-burnout (40.6% of the sample), average-engagement/average-burnout (53.9%), and low-engagement/high-burnout (5.5%). Another sample of lower-secondary school students was used to validate the 3 profiles. The factors most strongly associated with the high-engagement/low-burnout profile of lower-secondary school students’ were high levels of support from teachers and family, good academic performance, and lack of truancy. The Role of Teacher Closeness in Emotions and Achievement for Adolescents With and Without Learning Difficulties
2022
Student–teacher relationships are crucial for adolescents’ adjustment in the school context. Students’ learning difficulties (LDs) were identified based on tested reading and math skills. In addition, students evaluated their teacher relationships and rated academic emotions in literacy and math domains. The results indicated that higher teacher closeness was related to increasing positive emotions and increasing literacy achievement during seventh grade, whereas lower levels …
Cross-lagged relationships between home learning environment and academic achievement in Chinese
2015
Abstract We examined (a) the cross-lagged relationships between the home learning environment and academic achievement in Chinese, and (b) whether parents’ socioeconomic status (SES) and child's gender moderate the relations. One hundred seventy-seven Chinese children were followed from Grade 1 to Grade 2 and were assessed on reading and mathematics. Their parents also responded to a questionnaire assessing the frequency of engaging in different home literacy and numeracy activities. Results showed that reading ability in Grade 1 negatively predicted informal home literacy activities in Grade 2. In turn, mathematics ability in Grade 1 negatively predicted formal home numeracy activities in …
Akateemisen saksan kielen rooli suomalaisopiskelijoiden näkökulmasta
2009
In most academic disciplines nowadays, German plays only a minor role in academic publishing. On the other hand, academic mobility has increased and Germany is the most popular target country for Finnish students. For any successful academic exchange with German-speaking countries, a sound competence in German is a major advantage. To explore students’ opinions about multilingualism and the role of German, an online-survey amongst 20400 students, with 3516 respondents (17,3 %), was conducted in 2008. The main emphasis was on language skills needed for studying in Finland and German-speaking countries, on possible culture-bound practices and on students’ self-evaluation of oral skills in Ger…

2015
