Short distance neutrino oscillations with Borexino

2014

International audience; The Borexino detector has convincingly shown its outstanding performances in the low energy, sub-MeV regime through its unprecedented accomplishments in the solar and geo-neutrinos detection. These performances make it the ideal tool to accomplish a state-of-the-art experiment able to test unambiguously the long-standing issue of the existence of a sterile neutrino, as suggested by the several anomalous results accumulated over the past two decades, i.e. the outputs of the LSND and Miniboone experiments, the results of the source calibration of the two Gallium solar neutrino experiments, and the recently hinted reactor anomaly. The SOX project will exploit two source…

Study on resolution capacity and secondary mechanisms of three different TSK gels for organic SEC.

2005

A comparative study on the elution behavior in size-exclusion chromatography (SEC) of three polymeric TSK gel packings, named H, H H R , and H X L types, is performed. The deviations of the universal calibration (u.c.) curves of seven solvent-polymer systems show evidence that the existence of secondary effects accompanying the main SEC mechanism. These secondary mechanisms are a consequence of the binary enthalpic interactions between the different components of the chromatographic system, such as polymer-solvent, polymer-gel and solvent-gel. However, in the present case, the observed deviations from a unique u.c. curve can mainly be attributed to adsorption of polymeric solutes (analytes)…

Estimation of Passenger Car Equivalents for single-lane roundabouts using a microsimulation-based procedure

2017

Calibration of microscopic traffic simulation models for single-lane roundabouts.Use of a meta-analytical estimation of critical and follow up headways.Use of a genetic algorithm-based procedure.Calculation of passenger car equivalents for single-lane roundabouts. Passenger car equivalents for heavy vehicles are required to carry out capacity calculations and perform operational analysis of any road entity (roadway segments or intersections). At single-lane roundabouts, the constraints to the vehicular trajectories imposed by the curvilinear geometric design and the driver's gap acceptance behaviour are expected to produce an impact of the heavy vehicles on the quality of traffic flow diffe…

Spatial and temporal heterogeneity of ventilator-associated lung injury after surfactant depletion.

2008

Volutrauma and atelectrauma have been proposed as mechanisms of ventilator-associated lung injury, but few studies have compared their relative importance in mediating lung injury. The objective of our study was to compare the injury produced by stretch (volutrauma) vs. cyclical recruitment (atelectrauma) after surfactant depletion. In saline-lavaged rabbits, we used high tidal volume, low respiratory rate, and low positive end-expiratory pressure to produce stretch injury in nondependent lung regions and cyclical recruitment in dependent lung regions. Tidal changes in shunt fraction were assessed by measuring arterial Po2 oscillations. After ventilating for times ranging from 0 to 6 h, lu…

FT-Raman determination of Mepiquat chloride in agrochemical products

2004

Abstract A fast and environmentally friendly procedure has been developed for Fourier transform Raman (FT-Raman) determination of a quaternary ammonium compound, Mepiquat chloride, in pesticide emulsifiable concentrate formulations. The method is based on the measurement of peak area values between 711 and 701 cm −1 corrected using a baseline defined at 620 cm −1 and interpolated in an external calibration of Mepiquat chloride standards dissolved in water. FT-Raman spectra were collected over 1.5 min from samples confined in screw cap standard chromatographic glass vials, at a nominal resolution of 4 cm −1 accumulating 25 scans per spectra and using a laser power of 1000 mW. Five commercial…

Modelling anaerobic biomass growth kinetics with a substrate threshold concentration.

2004

Abstract Many bacteria have been observed to stop growing below a certain substrate threshold concentration. In this study, a modification of the Monod kinetics expression has been proposed to take into account this substrate threshold concentration observed in bacterial growth. Besides the threshold concentration no additional parameters have been added to the kinetic expression and so, only the substrate threshold concentration and the half-saturation constant have to be estimated for model calibration purposes. Furthermore, for parameter estimation purposes, practical identifiability of this new function has been studied and the results have been satisfactory. The new model has been appl…

Determination of Boron in Fertilizers by Inductively Coupled Plasma-Atomic Emission Spectrometry: Studies of Some Spectral Interferences at Different…

1995

Abstract The most sensitive analytical wavelengths of boron cannot be used in the determination of boron in fertilizers by inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry because of spectral interference by potassium, phosphorus, and iron. For the 4 wavelengths of boron investigated, it was noticed that, at the same wavelength, the pattern of spectral interference changes according to fertilizer composition. The spectral interference patterns at the 4 analytical boron wavelengths were studied by adding matrix elements typically found in fertilizers to real fertilizer samples. When levels of added matrix elements correlate less than 0.2 to each other, the effect of added matrix eleme…

Determination of Phenylephrine Hydrochloride by Flow Injection Analysis with Chemiluminescence Detection

2001

Abstract A new method is proposed for the determination of phenylephrine hydrochloride by flow injection analysis with direct chemiluminescence detection. The method is based on the oxidation of the drug by potassium permanganate in sulfuric acid medium at 80°C. The calibration graph is linear over the range 0.03–8 ppm phenylephrine hydrochloride, with a relative standard deviation (n = 51, 0.5 ppm) of 1.1% and sample throughput of 134/h. The influence of 38 different foreign compounds was tested, and the method was applied to the determination of phenylephrine hydrochloride in 8 different pharmaceutical formulations.

Enhanced chemiluminescent determination of chloramphenicol and related nitro compounds by ‘on-line’ photochemical reaction

2000

The viability of tandem photochemical reaction-chemiluminescence detection was studied for a heterogeneous family of nitro compounds using chloramphenicol as a test substance. The 'on-line' chemical photodegradation of chloramphenicol was performed in a flow injection assembly by using a photoreactor consisting of a 725 cm x 0.5 mm id piece of PTFE tubing coiled around an 8 W low-pressure mercury lamp. Photodegraded chloramphenicol was detected by oxidizing photo-fragments from the parent compound and their subsequent reaction with a luminol-Co(II) system. The calibration graph was linear up to 3 x 10(-5) mol l-1 chloramphenicol, the limit of detection was 3 x 10(-9) mol l-1, the relative s…

Review of RGB photoelasticity

2015

Abstract Automatic methods of photoelasticity have had a significant progress with the development of automatic acquisition and image processing methods. This article concerns RGB photoelasticity, which allows the determination of the photoelastic retardation using, usually, a single acquisition of the isochromatic fringes in white light by a colour camera. In particular, the article presents an overview of the main characteristics of RGB photoelasticity that is influence of the quarter-wave plate error, number of acquisitions, type of light source, determination of low and high fringe orders, methods for searching the retardation, scanning procedures, calibration on a material different fr…
