Characterization of the trimeric, self-recognizing Geodia cydonium lectin I.

1983

A D-galactose-specific lectin I was extracted from the sponge Geodia cydonium and purified by affinity chromatography. The molecular weight of lectin I as determined by high-pressure liquid gel chromatography, was found to be 36500 +/- 1300. Disc gel electrophoresis in the presence and in the absence of sodium dodecyl sulfate showed that lectin I is a trimer composed of three different subunits (Mr: 13800, 13000 and 12200); two of the three subunits are linked by one disulfide bond. Isoelectric focusing gave a pI of 5.6 for the native molecule and a pI of 4.4 and of 7.4 for the subunits. The three subunits carry carbohydrate side chains, composed of D-galactose (94%) and of arabinose (5%). …

A comparative study of the physicochemical properties of iron isomaltoside 1000 (Monofer®), a new intravenous iron preparation and its clinical impli…

2011

Abstract The treatment of iron deficiency anemia with polynuclear iron formulations is an established therapy in patients with chronic kidney disease but also in other disease areas like gastroenterology, cardiology, oncology, pre/post operatively and obstetrics’ and gynecology. Parenteral iron formulations represent colloidal systems in the lower nanometer size range which have traditionally been shown to consist of an iron core surrounded by a carbohydrate shell. In this publication, we for the first time describe the novel matrix structure of iron isomaltoside 1000 which differs from the traditional picture of an iron core surrounded by a carbohydrate. Despite some structural similaritie…

CPMAS 13C NMR Characterization of Leaves and Litters from the Reafforestated Area of Mustigarufi in Sicily (Italy)

2010

Reafforestation is generally based on the planting of exotic fast growing tree species suitable for adapting to even harsh environments. Once the introduced plants ameliorate soil conditions, they can be progressively replaced by au- tochthonous plant species. Reafforestation is applied worldwide. However, only few studies on the effect of reafforesta- tion on lands from Mediterranean regions are available. This paper reports the characterization by cross polarization 13C NMR spectroscopy of fresh leaves and superficial litters from a reafforestated area in central Sicily (Italy). NMR assign- ment is attempted. A differentiation among the molecular systems within leaves and litters is also …

Biochemical aspects of stuck and sluggish fermentation in grape must

1998

Recently a number of studies have focused on the factors responsible for the occurrence of stuck and sluggish fermentations. Results from these studies indicate that together with nutritional deficiencies and inhibitory substances, technological practices could lead to such situations. This review explains, from a biochemical point of view, the influence of nutritional deficiencies, inhibitory substances and technological practices on yeast cell development and physiology and the fermentation process.

ChemInform Abstract: Carbohydrate Auxiliaries in Stereoselective Syntheses of Decahydroquinoline Alkaloids.

2010

Using tetra-O-pivaloyl-β-D-galactopyranosylamine as the chiral auxiliary, both trans- and cis-annelated decahydroquinoline alkaloids can be synthesized stereoselectively. This methodology of asymmetric synthesis is based on the effect that both enantiomers of 2,6-disubstituted piperidin-4-ones are selectively and alternatively accessible using the auxiliary as the identical stereodifferentiating tool. In addition, the carbohydrate auxiliary controls the stereoselective protonation of enolates formed by conjugate addition of cuprates to N-galactosyl octahydroquinolin-4-ones. The syntheses of trans-4a-epi-pumiliotoxin C and cis-4a-epi-perhydro-219A illustrate this concept of asymmetric synthe…

Responses of citrus plants to ozone: leaf biochemistry, antioxidant mechanisms and lipid peroxidation.

2006

The effects of ozone upon 3-year-old trees of Clementina mandarin (Citrus clementina Hort. ex Tan.) cv. Marisol exposed for 12 months to ambient (10 nl l(-1)) and high (30 and 65 nl l(-1)) concentrations in open top chambers (OTCs) were investigated. The data showed that in leaves, ozone reduced total chlorophylls, carotenoid and carbohydrate concentration. and increased 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) content and ethylene production. In treated plants, the ascorbate leaf pool was decreased, while lipid peroxidation and Solute leakaGe were significantly higher than in ozone-free controls. The data indicated that ozone triggered protective mechanisms against oxidative stress in c…

Behavior of Flavor Compounds in Model Food Systems:  a Thermodynamic Study

2003

Physicochemical parameters, such as hydrophobicity, water solubility, and volatility, of four flavor compounds (ethyl acetate, ethyl butyrate, ethyl hexanoate, and 2-pentanone) were determined. The amount of flavor compounds released from different model matrices (mineral water, purified triolein, an oil-in-water emulsion, a carbohydrate matrix, and a complex matrix containing lipids and carbohydrates) into the gaseous phase was determined at thermodynamic equilibrium, at 37 degrees C, by static headspace gas chromatography. The degree of interaction between the flavor compounds and the matrix components was shown by measuring the percentage retention using the water matrix as the reference…

Biologically Active Triterpene Saponins from Callus Tissue of Polygala amarella

1999

A new bioactive saponin (1), together with a known saponin (polygalasaponin XXVIII) has been isolated from the callus tissue culture of Polygala amarella. Based on spectroscopic data, especially direct and long-range heteronuclear 2D NMR analysis and on chemical transformations, the structure of 1 was elucidated as 3-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl presenegenin-28-O-beta-D-galactopyranosyl-(1 --> 3)-beta-D-xylopyranosyl-(1 --> 4)-alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1 --> 2)-[beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1 --> 3)]-beta-D-fucopyranoside. Both saponins showed significant immunological properties based on the enhancement of granulocyte phagocytosis in vitro.
