Die Wirkung von Reserpin auf die Konzentration von Adrenalin und Noradrenalin im Katzenherz

1959

1. Cats were given single injections of 1.8 mg/kg reserpine intraperitoneally. After a time interval of 18 hours the animals were killed. The concentration of adrenaline and noradrenaline in the right and left atria and ventricles was estimated by a method reported previously. 2. Reserpine caused a similar loss of catechol amines from all parts of the heart. The concentration of noradrenaline was reduced by 93–97%, the concentration of adrenaline by 59–79%. 3. These observations suggest that the adrenaline of the heart behaves differently from that of sympathetic ganglia or postganglionic nerve fibres after an injection of reserpine. In ganglia and nerve fibres the adrenaline concentration …

Small-signal analysis of the encoder mechanism in the lobster stretch receptor and the frog and cat muscle spindle.

1975

Photoplethysmography in dogs and cats: a selection of alternative measurement sites for a pet monitor.

2018

Objective Photoplethysmography (PPG) is an increasingly popular health and well-being tool for monitoring heart rate and oxygen saturation. Due to the pigmentation and hairiness of dogs and cats, a pulse oximeter is routinely placed solely on the tongue. As this approach is feasible only for pet monitor use during surgical procedures, we investigate PPG signal quality on several other measurement sites that would be better tolerated by conscious animals. Approach Acquired PPG signals are analyzed by four signal quality indices: mean baseline, signal power, kurtosis, and tolerance score. Main results In dogs, the metacarpus and tail can be substituted for oral pulse oximeter placement since …

Autoradiographic technique to assess distribution of blood flow within organs

1969

A method is described for assessing the distribution of blood flow within organs. Microspheres, 5–50 μ in diameter, labelled with a beta-emitting isotope were injected into the left ventricle of experimental animals. The distribution of the indicator within the tissues, which is assumed to represent the regional distribution of flow, was visualized and measured quantitatively by autoradiography. Local flow rates in areas of about 1,2 mm in diameter could be determined. Application of the technique for the study of regional myocardial and renal circulation is demonstrated.

Effect of acetylcholine and dopamine iontophoretically applied on the sensory responsive caudate unit

1986

A putative integrative function of the striatum was evaluated through the study of the electrical activity of sensory responsive caudate neurones. Both nervous (radial nerve) and auditory stimulations were delivered in order to characterize populations of neurones affected by peripheral stimuli; the units were previously activated by iontophoretic glutamate. On these units the iontophoretic ejection of ACh and DA was tested. Experimental results demonstrated a prevalent excitatory effect of ACh, while DA appeared to exert a drastic decrease on firing rate. A comparison between peripheral stimuli and chemical substances was made. The result of such study showed a most important action of the…

Relations between basal ganglia and hippocampus: Action of substantia nigra and pallidum

1986

Several interrelationships exist between basal ganglia and hippocampus. The ventral striatum appears to be involved in the control of the dopaminergic nigro-striatal pathway. The caudate, in turn, seems to influence the hippocampal theta rhythm and to inhibit hippocampal spikes. In the present work the role played by globus pallidus pars interna and substantia nigra pars compacta on hippocampal bioelectrical activity is studied. Injection of sodium penicillin i.v. produces steady interictal spikes in the hippocampus. Substantia nigra stimulation induces regular theta rhythm and inhibits the spikes. Pallidal stimulation, on the contrary, appears to strongly enhance epileptiform activity, pro…
