Derivatisation of Pyrogallarenes

2005

Derivatisation of upper-rim hydroxy groups of pyrogallarenes produced completely acylated and tosylated pyrogallarene derivatives. Mesitylation of pyrogallarene, however, resulted in a regioselective derivatisation of hydroxy groups, i.e. eight OH groups out of 12 were mesitylated. Crystal structures of the synthesised pyrogallarene derivatives indicate that completely substituted pyrogallarenes exist in a distorted crown conformation despite of the lack of stabilising intramolecular hydrogen bonds. In contrast, the partially substituted pyrogallarene adopts a boat conformation and has an open cavity for the inclusion of small guest molecules. © Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, 69451 Weinh…

Induction of B-cell development in adult mice reveals the ability of bone marrow to produce B-1a cells

2009

AbstractTo study B-cell development from bone marrow (BM), we generated recombination-activating gene 1 (Rag1)–targeted mice lacking mature lymphocytes. B-cell development can be induced in such mice by B cell–specific restoration of a functional Rag1 transcription unit. Follicular and marginal zone B cells populated the spleen when Rag1 expression was permitted. Notably, the peritoneal cavity was dominated by bona fide B-1a cells, as judged by surface markers and functional properties. These BM-derived B-1a cells exhibited a polyclonal VDJ repertoire with substantial N nucleotide insertions. Nevertheless, physiologic frequencies of phosphatidylcholine-specific B cells were detected. Import…

Tumor hypoxia in pelvic recurrences of cervical cancer.

1998

We have previously demonstrated in primary cancer of the uterine cervix that tumor hypoxia, as determined polarographically, is strongly associated with clinical malignant progression of the disease. Having applied a similar methodological approach to investigate loco-regional relapses, we found a pronounced shift to more hypoxic oxygenation profiles in the recurrent tumors than in the primary tumors. Median pO2 values in 53 pelvic recurrences were significantly lower than the median pO2 values of 117 primary tumors of comparable sizes (7.1 +/- 1.1 mmHg vs. 12.1 +/- 1.0 mmHg, p = 0.0013). The differences in tumor oxygenation between primary and recurrent tumors mirrored the differences in t…

Adenomyotic Cyst in a 25-Year-Old Woman: Case Report

2013

Adenomyotic cysts are uncommon findings, usually in the context of diffuse adenomyosis and <5 mm in diameter. Herein we report a 4.5-cm adenomyotic cyst in a 25-year-old nulliparous woman with severe dysmenorrhea and pelvic pain. Transvaginal ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a well-circumscribed hypoechogenic mass in the posterior uterine wall, well separated from the uterine cavity. Pathologic analysis demonstrated that the cyst was lined with endometrial epithelium and stroma and was surrounded by smooth muscle hyperplasia. In the literature, we found 30 reports of cysts with similar characteristics. Because this cyst has not been clearly defined, it has been called…

Peritoneal HPV‐DNA test in cervical cancer (PIONEER study): A proof of concept

2020

The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of peritoneal human papillomavirus (HPV) infection in different clinical cervical cancer (CC) settings, and its association with potential clinical and/or histological factors. This is a single-center, prospective, observational study. Consecutive patients with newly diagnosed or recurrent/persistent CC, between March 2019 and April 2020, were included. A group of patients undergoing surgery for benign gynecological conditions was included as control group. All patients underwent HPV-DNA test in the cervix and in the peritoneal cavity simultaneously at time of surgery. Two-hundred seventy-two patients had cervical and peritoneal HPV te…

Monosodium benzoate hypersensitivity in subjects with persistent rhinitis

2004

Background:  Very few data are available from the literature on whether nonatopic subjects affected by persistent rhinitis may show the appearance of objective symptoms of rhinitis after the ingestion of food additives such as tartrazine (E102), erythrosine (E127), monosodium benzoate (E211), p-hydroxybenzoate (E218), sodium metabisulphite (E223), and monosodium glutamate (E620). It is still unclear whether the ingestion of food additive may cause, as well, a consensual reduction of nasal peak inspiratory flow (NPIFR). Therefore, we used a double-blind placebo-controlled (DBPC) study to evaluate this hypothesis. Patients and methods:  Two hundred and twenty-six consecutive patients (76 male…

Parasitic myomas after laparoscopic surgery: an emerging complication in the use of morcellator? Description of four cases

2011

Objective To report the development of parasitic myomas after the use of a morcellator. Design Retrospective study. Setting Tertiary care referral center for the treatment of benign gynecologic pathologies. Patient(s) Women undergoing surgery for uterine fibroids. Intervention(s) Chart review. Main Outcome Measure(s) Presence of parasitic leiomyomas. Result(s) We identified four cases of parasitic myomas over the 3-year study period. Two out of the four were symptomatic. The prevalence of this complication, considering all women with whom the electric morcellator was used (n = 423) was 0.9% (95% CI, 0.3–2.2%). Considering exclusively the women who underwent myomectomy (n = 321), it was 1.2%…

Laparoscopic-ultrasonographic combined technique for the creation of a neovagina in Mayer-Rokitansky-Kuster-Hauser syndrome

1996

Objective To create a neovagina using a combined laparoscopic and ultrasonographic technique in Mayer-Rokitansky-Kuster-Hauser syndrome by modification of Vecchietti's operation. Design Case report. Setting Division of Physiopathology of Reproduction, University of Palermo, Palermo, Italy. Main Outcome Measure(s) The advancement of the needle from the pseudohymen, through the vesicorectal space using a triple contrast ultrasonographic technique. Result(s) The ultrasonographic scanning guides the accurate transit from external genitalia to the peritoneal cavity. Conclusion(s) This original approach allowed a safe and rapid creation of a neovagina in a case of Mayer-Rokitansky-Kuster-Hauser s…

Prospective study of the 532 nm laser (KTP) versus diode laser 980 nm in the resection of hyperplastic lesions of the oral cavity

2018

Background The aim of this study is to evaluate the resection of hyperplastic lesions on the buccal mucosa comparing the 532nm laser (KTP), versus diode 980nm laser, considering pain, scarring, inflammation and drug consumption that occurred postoperatively with each lasers. Material and Methods A prospective study of consecutive series of 20 patients in two groups that presents hyperplastic lesions on the buccal mucosa. The choice of the KTP laser or diode 980nm laser for the surgery was made randomly. The power used was 1.5W in both groups in a continuous wave mode with a 320 μm optical fiber. Parameters of pain, scarring, inflammation and consumption of drugs were recorded by a Numerical…
