A Multi objective inventory model for short food supply chains
2017
Over the past 50 years, vertically integrated multinationals dominated global food markets by providing huge product diversity at low prices. Such systems are characterized by long supply chains capable of achieving high cost efficiencies resulting from the use of cheap raw materials, high chemical inputs, industrial shelf-life extension processes, economies of scale and mechanization. This dominant position on the market, however, has been achieved at a heavy cost on the global environment, generated by massive food wastage, and by a steady supply of fossil fuels. For such reasons, global supply chains are considered unsustainable and new food systems are being promoted in order to replace…
Wireless ECG and cardiac monitoring systems: State of the art, available commercial devices and useful electronic components
2021
Abstract Wireless ElectroCardioGram (ECG) systems are employed in manifold application fields: tele-monitoring, sport applications, support to ageing people at home, fetal ECG, wearable devices and ambulatory monitoring. The presence of cables often hinders user’s free movements, alongside clinicians’ routine operations. Therefore, wireless ECG systems are desirable. This paper aims at reviewing the solutions described in the literature, besides commercially available devices and electronic components useful to setup laboratory prototypes. Several systems have been developed, different in terms of the adopted technology; when approaching the development of a wireless ECG system, some import…
Effects of tilling methods on soil penetration resistance, organic carbon and water stable aggregates in a vineyard of semiarid Mediterranean environ…
2018
Tillage, especially in semiarid Mediterranean environment, enhances the mineralization process of soil organic matter (SOM) and, in turn, decreases aggregate stability. Furthermore, continuous tillage leads to the formation of plough pan beneath the tilled layer. In the present study, we investigated the effect of an innovative self-propelled machine (spading machine, SM) for shallow tillage on SOM, water stable aggregates (WSA) and soil penetration resistance (PR). Such effects were compared to those of chisel plough (CP), rotary tiller (RT) and no tillage (NT). Each tilling method was applied up to a depth of 15 cm, whereas in NT only a brush cutter was used for weed control. Soil analyse…
Elia Ovazza, Professor of TMM in Palermo Around the End of the 19th Century
2015
In this paper, the figure of Elia Ovazza, professor of TMM in Palermo around the end of the 19th century, is presented, along with his valuable legacy in regard to his activities in teaching, research, design and technology transfer. Short biographical notes outline his foremost life events and an illustrated survey explains his contributions.
Acute cardio-respiratory effects in rats of PS4α, an antineoplastic peptidoglycan from Mycobacterium vaccae
2001
Abstract PS4α is a high molecular weight peptidoglycan extracted from Mycobacterium vaccae, which has demonstrated considerable antineoplastic activity in-vivo without apparent toxicity. Available for testing in only small quantities, a sensitive in-vivo method for measuring pulse and breathing rates in cannulated rats was applied to this compound at doses of 5, 50 and 500 μg kg−1. Various parameters (mean arterial pressure, maximum transpulmonary pressure, compliance, heart rate, minute volume, respiratory rate and tidal volume) were followed for up to 1 h and demonstrated no significant deviation in the baseline values obtained before injection. This compound at doses up to 500 μg kg−1 ha…

Implementation of active infrared NDT techniques using long square heating pulses
2012
The present work describes the implementation of active IR Thermography techniques for the NDT of thick polymer and glass-fibre reinforced polymer (GRP) composite panels. A low cost Thermal NDT set-up is proposed, comprising a single-detector IR camera with low thermal resolution and low frame rate, and common low-power halogen lamps as external heat source devices. The use of halogen lamps in particular requires several seconds of switch-on time in order to deliver meaningful and effective heat quantities. The influence of such long heat deposition intervals is investigated on the possibility to implement Transient Thermography and Lock-In Thermography techniques. Regarding the Transient T…
R. Florio, L'architettura delle idee. La Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn di Napoli, Napoli 2016
2017
On the biomechanical function of scaffolds for engineering load-bearing soft tissues
2009
Replacement or regeneration of load-bearing soft tissues has long been the impetus for the development of bioactive materials. While maturing, current efforts continue to be confounded by our lack of understanding of the intricate multi-scale hierarchical arrangements and interactions typically found in native tissues. The current state of the art in biomaterial processing enables a degree of controllable microstructure that can be used for the development of model systems to deduce fundamental biological implications of matrix morphologies on cell function. Furthermore, the development of computational frameworks which allow for the simulation of experimentally derived observations represe…
