Regularization operators for natural images based on nonlinear perception models.

2006

Image restoration requires some a priori knowledge of the solution. Some of the conventional regularization techniques are based on the estimation of the power spectrum density. Simple statistical models for spectral estimation just take into account second-order relations between the pixels of the image. However, natural images exhibit additional features, such as particular relationships between local Fourier or wavelet transform coefficients. Biological visual systems have evolved to capture these relations. We propose the use of this biological behavior to build regularization operators as an alternative to simple statistical models. The results suggest that if the penalty operator take…

Public financing of education systems and economic growth in underdeveloped countries: a case study of West African Monetary and Economic Union (WAME…

2008

At the World Education Forum of Dakar in 2000, international aid institutions committed to massive financial aid to the educational systems in developing countries because these sectors' performed poorly during the 1990s. These international aid institutions promised that no country that demonstrated a serious commitment for education, especially primary education, would lack financial resources. Participants in the forum stressed the necessity for governments to work toward the goal of primary education for all. Implementing the funding strategies that the Dakar commitment called for may have a negative impact on those developing countries. Using West African Monetary and Economic Union (W…

Comparison of Iodine Quantification and Conventional Attenuation Measurements for Differentiating Small, Truly Enhancing Renal Masses From High-Atten…

2019

OBJECTIVE. The purpose of this study is to determine whether iodine quantification techniques from contrast-enhanced dual-energy CT (DECT) data allow equal differentiation of small enhancing renal masses from high-attenuation (> 20 HU of unenhanced attenuation) nonenhancing lesions, compared with conventional attenuation measurements. MATERIALS AND METHODS. A total of 220 nonconsecutive patients (mean [± SD] age, 66 ± 13 years; 130 men and 90 women) with 265 high-attenuation renal lesions (mean attenuation, 54 ± 33 HU; 91 enhancing lesions) were included. Each patient underwent single-energy unenhanced CT followed by DECT during the nephrographic phase using one of four different high-en…

Long-term results after operative treatment of femoral neck fractures with ceramic head prostheses.

2001

ABSTRACT From 1 985-1 990, a total of 277 elderly patients underwent hemiarthroplasty using a ceramic head prosthesis. Average patient age was 81.7 years. Of these, 77 patients were available for follow-up examination in 1993. A standardized score was calculated assessing activity, gait, and hip pain; the average score was 58 out of 78 possible points. Three patients had hip pain, and in 4 patients, radiographic examination revealed protrusio acetabuli. Two of 4 patients underwent revision surgery for replacement of the cup, leaving the stem in situ. Because of the small number of prosthetic-related complications, hemiarthroplasty using a ceramic head prosthesis is the recommended surgical …

Mechanisms of Disease: molecular insights into aseptic loosening of orthopedic implants

2007

Despite the success of treating rheumatic disorders with biologic therapies, joint replacement surgery still remains the final treatment option in many cases. Approximately 1.5 million joint arthroplastic operations are performed annually worldwide. Implant failure due to massive bone loss and aseptic loosening of prostheses, however, is a major complication of joint replacement, which can lead to high socioeconomic burdens both for the individual patient and for health-care systems. To date, there is no approved drug therapy to prevent or inhibit periprosthetic osteolysis, and aseptic loosening of prostheses can only be overcome by surgical revision. Research during the past decade, howeve…

Polyethyleneimine-based immunopolyplex for targeted gene transfer in human lymphoma celllines

2002

Background Specific and efficient delivery of genes into targeted cells is a priority objective in non-viral gene therapy. Polyethyleneimine-based polyplexes have been reported to be good non-viral transfection reagents. However, polyplex-mediated DNA delivery occurs through a non-specific mechanism. This article reports the construction of an immunopolyplex, a targeted non-viral vector based on a polyplex backbone, and its application in gene transfer over human lymphoma cell lines. Methods Targeting elements (biotin-labeled antibodies), which should recognize a specific element of the target cell membrane and promote nucleic acid entry into the cell, were attached to the polyplex backbone…
